When I buy a new computer several years from now (have a 2010 MBP now... it'll go for a while yet :) ) I probably will buy refurb.

Got a good deal on my refurbished base model late 2011 13" Macbook Pro a couple months ago for $950. Been working flawlessly since then, adding Apple Care next month just in case.

I have a friend who buys Apple refurbished laptops exclusively.

I've seen three or four of his, and they look as good as the new ones I buy. As far as performance and reliability, they are every bit as good as new.

Apple is the only manufacturer I'm aware of that does such an exemplary job of refurbishing their products.

I feel very confident in endorsing these fine machines.

Always been great to me..

my early 2011 is refurb and its flawless i could not find one scratch or mark on it, like others said its the same as new just the box is plain white instead of the apple logoed one

Same for me on this current one.. it had SEVEN Battery Cycle son it and appeared Completely as NEW.. my friends and I are 'Four for Four' on Refurb experiences, accordingly I ALWAYS have recommended this to others!! :D

my refurb had a faulty screen right off the bat, at a certain angle, the display would simply shut off. also i have logic board problems or ram problems with it now but that could happen with a bought-as-new computer as well

Just bought my second ever refurb Mac (umpteenth Mac in total) and my iPad was bought refurb - never an issue with the machines, support or anything else.

Just picked up a current model 15" MBP 2.2GHz Qi7, 4GB, 750GB, 6570m/HD3000, 1440x900 on refurb for £1389 UKP. The machine is in perfect condition and aside from the outer box is utterly indistinguishable from new. As an added bonus the machine came with 8GB RAM (2x4GB) rather than 4GB (2x2GB) as stated on the box. If I'd have picked the same machine up new - base model 15" MBP as a BTO with 750GB HDD and 8GB of RAM, it would have cost £1789UKP. Quite a substatial saving.

In 2008 I picked up a 24" iMac on refurb and was utterly delighted with that too.

In a word refurbed Apple kit is worth it, some worthwhile savings to be had.

I can't praise the refurbs highly enough. My current 17" was a refurb, or rather, a 'new old stock' early 2011, which I bought just after the late 2011s were released. It's the best machine I've ever had.

Bought an early MBP 13'' refurb and it was perfect cosmetically but it kenel panic every minute! Phone Apple Care and they swap another refurb and it's working flawlessly.

I've bought a refurb Macbook Pro, which I use daily and never had any serious problems and I also bought a refurb mac mini which i use as a home server, and also never had any issues with. It's been running since day 1 with restarts only for software updates. Other then that it's on 24/7.

Just thought id add my two cents as I've just bought a refurbished macbook. I only had it for a day and it was already freezing up. It is rather temperamental and would freeze randomly even when doing a simple task like run safari. The only thing i can do is turn it off and boot it up again.

A genius had a look at it he wasn't able to fix it so instead they're going to replace it with another one. It's taken me two hours to drive back/forth to to the Apple store and several calls to support team - all their gonna do is replace it. I'm not very happy, least they can do is give me a gift card.

When i get my replacement I'll update this post and let you guys know how the second refurbished macbook goes.

also just so you know the apple retail stores can't do much in regards to returning refurbished items. I had to ring up Apple to arrange with them a courier to sort out my replacement and collect my faulty product.

Tomorrow the couriers coming to pickup my faulty macbook so i probably won't get the replacement until this Friday =(

Our refurb 06 15 MBP is still doing its normal heavy load work, runs 24-7. Have replaced the battery only once, and installed additional memory. On keynote day, I did order a new 2012 top end 15 MBP non retina (delivery tomorrow :D) because the educational price was too good to pass but will keep this one running daily as well. When our MB needs replacing it will be a refurb unit as well.

Now this has me thinking to check how many devices we can have on a single apple account because we currently have an iPhone 4, 4s, iPad, iPad 2, MBP and MB using it between three family members.

Finally got my replacement macbook

please do i just bought one yesterday, hopefully mine comes out to be one of the good ones

I got it early today and have been using all day and have installed several programs. This one's great i have not had a problem and there's no bumps or scratches, its as if its brand new! I couldnt be happier and i was quite stoked to find there was 8GB RAM instead of the specified 4GB, i guess i was lucky this time.

Overall my experience has been great with the purchase of my refurbished macbook pro. Customer service was second to none both over the phone and in the Apple store with the geniuses. The lady whom i'd been in correspondence with over the phone even called me back today to make sure everything was working okay.

To sum here are the pros of buying refurb:
  • Save money while getting a macbook that looks brand new
  • If you're lucky you might get a free ram upgrade
  • Express postage (i ordered at 7am and recieved it 8am the next day)
  • Great customer service both in-store and over the phone

Cons:
  • You don't get an Apple box (some people might care)
  • No in-store help in regards to returns
  • Waiting time (they post out very fast though)

As you can see the cons aren't really justified if you're a patient and non-ocd person. I would definitely buy a refurbished macbook again, that if this one doesn't break down anytime soon. How was your purchase lazaro?

Where are you guys getting that the Store can't help with the return of a Refurb? Totally false. They can accept the return for a refund or store credit towards new Mac if within 14 days of receipt of the product just like any other Apple purchase. They cannot handle a straight trade because they don't have the Refurbs in-stock, but they can handle the drop-off of the one you're returning.

Apple refurbished products are considered by most to be a very good deal.
  • Apple Certified Refurbished Products are only available from the Apple Refurb Store and are not sold by any 3rd party or local Apple stores
  • Educational discounts do not apply to refurb products.
  • Refurb products come with the same warranty as new products, and qualify for AppleCare
  • Refurb products have a changed serial number that identifies them as refurbished
  • Refurb products come with whatever OS version and software they originally shipped with as new
  • Refurb products come with the same items in the box as new products, only the box is a plain one, not the new box.
  • A refurb product could have some cosmetic signs of prior use, but rarely do
  • A refurb Mac may have some cycles on the battery, but not a significant enough amount to affect usable life
  • The refurb store inventory changes frequently, sometimes several times a day, and doesn't have any direct relation to upcoming product releases. What's available in the refurb store is determined by what has been returned to Apple.
  • If you're looking for a particular item, refurb.me can alert you when it becomes available.

So my question is what happens to those Brand new Mac Book Pros that people buy then return within 14 days? Are these Mac Book Pro's repackaged and resold as new to other customers? Or is it considered refurbished? How do we know if its been used?

That was just from my experience at the store. But yes that all seems to be right as they didn't have my refurb model in stock.

I ordered a refurb yesterday. Got the base 2.2GHZ 15". For $450 cheaper that the new ones I couldn't justify that much money for a small CPU boost and USB 3.(Plus I figure I've got a decent shot of it being actually new with the 2012's just coming out.) I bought my wife a refurbed iPad 2 for mothers day and apart from packaging it appeared new.

I love the refurb store. I suspect I will never by a new one again. I am currently patiently waiting for IPad 3's to hit the store, I suspect that will happen in another few months.

The only difference between a refurb and brand new Mac is that you save a crapload of money with the refurb.

From my perspective, I've had nothing but pleasant experiences.

Not necessarily.

Last week I bought a brand new, late 2011 15" MBP, 2.2GHz, stock stuff for $1499, free shipping, no sales tax from bhphotovideo.com. They threw in a free copy of Parallels, AppleCare for half price ($120), a 256G Crucial M4 SSD for $179 and (although I didn't buy it) 8G Crucial RAM for $45.

I couldn't find that deal through refurb.

This is incorrect. The last place I worked at actually stocked Apple refurb products, we purchased big lots direct from Apple. We didn't always have them in stock, but we did most of the time. We were a 3rd party reseller.

That is beside the point. Refurbs are a great deal and I've never had any problem with either of the refurb MacBook Pros I've purchased.

Great Deal

I bought a refurbished core duo 15" macbook pro in 2007. It's still working great (though a little slow now). I did have to have the battery replaced (not as good as unibody batteries so it died more quickly) and the magsafe adapter frayed but apple replaced it for free (even though it was out of warranty by then). It's a great deal if you want to save some money.

My statement is correct. If your company bought refurb products from Apple, then resold them, they were no longer classified as refurbs, but as used. If your company sold an item 2 months after they bought it from Apple, it would only have 10 months of warranty remaining, because the warranty period begins when Apple sells the product. Apple has never authorized another reseller to sell Apple Certified Refurbished Products.

Items that a customer returns for any reason can be refurbished. They are not sold as new. Many refurb products were never actually used by the customer. There's no way to know on a particular unit whether it was used or not. If the battery has cycles on it, it could indicate it was used, or it could indicate cycles were put on it during testing. If you get a unit with no cosmetic indications, you pretty much can't tell if it was ever used. That's the great thing about refurbs: it's like buying a brand new product.
