Tried that, no good.

I booted up this morning and I decided not to click OK on the Power cable msg and the OS froze. So I rebooted, and in order to make the card run in software mode I need to click the warning MSG when it loads. There is also no dual link DVI which I expected and it is not a problem because I run my second monitor off the HD2600.

My HD2600 is also now not running in QE

Rominator: I bought it brand new, it says XFX HD4870 ZWFK on the box, and it looks like one. That's all I know.

Is this what you are after?

did you refer to this

? if so, no. maybe im blind but I cant see device id's there.

device ids look like this:

devid.png

Sorry Cindori, but that's what I have posted. Maybe you are not seeing the screen grabs posted. Device id 0x00009440
Vendor id 0x00001002

ok some error with the grabs then,

i can confirm that dev-id is inside qe_ci pkg, its also inside OSX by default.

so go try snow.

Cheers!

Though I don't fancy flashing myself but I am all for the mac community! It really is amazing work you've done. Indeed like posters above commented. Apple and AMD/ATI should put you on their payroll!

You rock!

p.s. hosting on a window server ... is that what makes the download slow? ;)

Hello, I have read these various threads as best as I can. I'm not overly technical minded. I'm able to acquire an ATI 4870, which appears to be this card:

Code:
ATI Reference 4870 (512 MB)
Sapphire 1st Gen 4870 (512 MB) (102-B50701-10-AT)

Sapphire HD4870 512M GDDR5
PCI-E DUAL DVI-I/TVO
PN 288-XXXXX-XXXXX
SKU# 11133-03-20R

..as the SKU# and other info matches. I am able to get this card for a limited time from someone locally. My questions are as follows. Is there any likelihood that despite have the same SKU and appearance that his is a newer card that will not work? Also, in your Flashing Tool it states that this card as a "Power Warning" issue, has any way been found to remove this, and if not is it a major issue? For anyone who knows, how is the fan noise on this card compared to say a stock 2600? I ask because I often need to record audio in the same room as my Mac Pro. Last questions, if you will, will it just be better to just look for a 4890 card, and if so...why?

I consider the 4870 since it is "closer" to the "Apple version" and so not to have to add the identifying file for the 4890 on every OS update. Again, I'm not very technical with computers, but I'm willing to take a chance with flashing the rom. Incase the info is needed, I'm use a version 3.1 (2008) Mac Pro.

Please, excuse my English, it is not my first language. All help is welcome. Please? :p

Succsess!!!

Thanks Rominator & Cindori.

Snow Leopard did the trick.

I know it must be tedious dealing with us newbies.
Anyway to show my appreciation I have donated $50 to your flash program Cindori. Sorry Rominator maybe Cindori can share the love as I didn't see a donate page for you.

Cheers
Tim:)

Flaz...just to be clear.

Are you using the ZWFL/FC rom I wrote last week on it or a different ROM?

Will help future folks if you clearly state which card and which ROM.

Snow Leopard is a better place for flashed 4870/90 cards. The ZWF cards especially...they have issues in Leopard.

Since that is a 512 MB card, you can not use any roms in the ROM folder (they are for 1gig)

but since it is a reference model, you should probably have success with apple 4870 rom.

just like Mark Booth did here:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/661681/

he didnt link the ROM but you can find it if you search that thread.

edit:
that card has a modified fan. those cards have a history of being troublesome to get working. I would try to get a 1Gig card, only few $ more, but more performance and also alot bigger ROM pool.

THANK YOU very much to Flaz and also everyone else that has donated.
it really makes me want to continue developing the app and make it better!

working on updated version, releasing probably by end of the week.

features:
modified natit's
some icon changes
some dialog changes
safer flashing

p.s Rommy I will to share Flaz donation if you want ;)

Thank you for the info Cindori. I have a question. Please. If I purchase a 4870 or 4890 card that is not on the good list, and fail, can it just be used for games in Bootcamp or will problems happen in OSX? If I cannot flash card, can I just use it in Bootcamp still for games and do not worry in OSX? I ask because I just want to make sure before buying if I can select the 4870/4890 for games in Bootcamp (Windows) and disable my Ati 2600 in Bootcamp. Only for games. However, use the 2600 in OSX as before. One more question. The 4870/4890 needs two power cables (ok, have them), Mac Pro only has 2, no? Will anything else need them? I have an Unversal Audio UAD-2 quad in slot and Ati 2600.

Sorry if this is off topic to Flash Tool. Also, still don't know. Does "your power cable.." warning happen with 4890? Thank you for all the work on the tool and all. :D

A PC card can always be used in Bootcamp.
Use Mac card in slot 1 and PC card in slot 2. Your computer will boot both Win and Osx with that setup. In windows, disable 2600 driver, and also switch DVI cable to 4890 ofc.

However, even if flashing does not work for you, you can install Natit. Info about Natit is in main post and Flashing Tool under Injector. So getting 4890 / 4870 to run in OSX is failsafe, but flashing is more narrow in terms of compatability.

Natit might not work out of the box for you. Some people have had to modify the Natit rom data to make a special Natit version for their card. If you have problems with flashing, and then problems with Natit, you can dump ROM of your card with GPU-Z in windows, and upload it for me and I will make a custom Natit for you.

The 2 slots on the Mac Pro motherboard are only for graphic cards.
As the 2600 does not use any power cables, you are solid.

The power cable warning bug is so far happening on 4870 XFX cards of ZW-something-models.

Thanks, you have been a great help. :D

Is this HIS 4890 cards still compatible or are they void now? Seller has one of those also.

Good point Rominator.

The Card I have is the XFX 4870 ZWFK. This is how I got it working on my Mac pro(Early 2008)

I flashed the card in Dos using ATIFlash with the Sapphire ROM in Cindori's ATI Flashing Tool ROM folders.
I booted up OS X 10.8 to see the card had a power cable warning message and no Quartz Extreme support, so on the advice of The Rominator I upgraded to snow Leopard.
Since the upgrade to SL the card is working perfectly now and I am running final Cut studio FCP, Motion ect... with no problems.

I do get the "power warning message" still but it goes away after a few seconds and doesn't seem to affect anything. It is not like the old message that used to crash my OS.

Anybody else find it a really nice surprise that Snow Leopard actually fixed a lot of 4870 issues and made life easier for card flashes? It was quite the unexpected bonus...

a little help...

I went through and read the entire 4870 rom dumping thread and i still didnt get how i was actually going to accomplish anything. I was looking at purchasing the following card and i was wondering if it was compatible.

HIS H489FT1GP Radeon HD 4890 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Turbo OC Edition - Retail

I will tinker with it and if i blow it up it just wasnt meant to be. I will continue to read but im not sure if ill get all of it. :)

Cindori,

BTW thanks for this great flashing tool, i went back and reread my original post and i never thanked you. So thanks for the great flashing tool and for investing the time and effort to actually do this...

Looks like i will be doing this in the coming weeks, i am reading it over and it really seems too easy and to be honest that is whats scary. Thanks to The Rominator for answering questions in the other thread and for being willing to let me be a guinea pig, i just moved too slowly.

Hi, i read the post to how to make the rom, buuut :) my experience is not that level to do it by my self.

I was looking that there is rom for XFX ZDF7 and i wonder if this rom can make the same to my XFX ZDDC?
It is the same HD-489A series, so if i try the rom what is the risk?

And is there any one to like to help my to whit the rom? :)
I can also give some donation to the helper.

You're asking if the ZDF7 rom will work for your ZDDC card?

I would think so. You should give it a shot.

If it doesnt work, it shouldnt be harder then to flash back to your original rom with ATIFlashTool. Worst case scenario, you need PC to reflash.

Hey, this tool looks perfect. I'm gonna be picking up a sapphire HD 4870 1GB card tomorrow and hopefully get it working.

I'm just wondering if the 4870 rom included with the tool will work with the 1GB version of the card? Also should I backup the original rom on the card i get in windows with gpu-z before I do this?

I'm so excite! Tomorrow can't come soon enough!

Yep.
So how this back to original rom happened?
If something goes wrong?
I have normal pc also, so if i need to reflash it.
So there is no reason to fear that the card is going to brick.

All the roms are for 1GB cards unless specified 512.
There are also PC original rom included in most folders. (rom is name original i think)

but backing up through GPU z is a good idea if you have windows installed.

In ROM sapphire folder, you have 2 roms - mac modified and original

if you flash with mac modified, and then can't boot osx,
use this guide on your PC,
http://web.me.com/jacobcroft/4870Flash/4870Flash.html

but use the "original" rom from the sapphire rom folder.
