so i picked up a Sapphire HD 4870 1GB today (SKU# 11133-19-20R) and I've tried installing Natit and swapping out the cards (i have an x1900) I get no video and the fan on the card just runs at full speed.

anyone else have this problem?

UPDATE:

Nevermind I got it fixed. it's working in OS X, just gotta try boot camp now.

How did you solve this? I have the same card.

well it wasn't too easy.

I followed these instructions: http://web.me.com/jacobcroft/4870Flash/4870Flash.html

Not all of them tho.

Just the boot cd stuff

you see the problem I had was that you NEED the power cable connected to the x1900 to boot into windows (it'll run in os x without the power cable connected)

I re routed the 2nd molex connector from the CD-Rom bays through the bottom part and used the 4pin molex to 6pin adaptor that came with my video card.

I had the x1900 in the 2nd slot and connected directly to the main board, i had the 4870 in the 1st slot and connected to the re-routed power cable.

I made the cd as per the instructions and flashed the card using atiflash. Just make sure you flash the right card, (it'll be the one thats listed as 0 under the adaptor column)

After the flash, turn off the computer, remove the x1900 and plug both power connectors into the 4870 and reboot.

I could see the apple logo and boot into os x just fine. Seems to be working for me. And it's working fine in windows 7 too.

I have noticed some graphical bugs in os x sometimes, like on boot and animations arent as smooth (ie, opening and closing windows etc)

You don't need the x1900 to boot windows and make a bootcd.
anyho, sorry natit didn't work for you.

I tired booting windows with just the 4870 installed and it wouldn't boot.

I'd get no video signal.

anyways, it seems to be working now

I don't know what the problem could be, but every time I run a 3D application in windows, I get graphical problems scattered across the screen, and then the system crashes.

I've had graphical problems in os x as well.

Could this be because I have the card being powered from the mainboard power connector and splitting the power from the 2nd cd-rom connector? is it not getting enough power this way?

If you select Windows in Startup Disk before rebooting, your computer will act just like PC computer.

Get snow leopard if you don't already have it

No. I've run my 4890 like that.

Are you still running yours like that?
I've updated the drivers and everything in windows. Could it be the dual monitors I have set up?

bah this is almsot perfect.:(

No, but I ran it like that for 1 month.

Might be your dual monitors.

Might be bad rom.

I notice that if i watch some youtube hd video is "jumpy"??

And the fan is behave weird, if i just browse in safari and reload new page the fan is speeding up?

I can live whit the fan noise but the "jumpy" video i like to know is it for this flash or something else.

That tutorial is for flashing...?
Not making a rom.

Flash with ATIFlashing Tool using the mac modified - normal .rom
it should fix your problems.

Hi, yes :) i just wakeup and last night was party hard. :D
Yes i just flash it to normal .rom and now the noise is smaller and the hd video works nice.

So how do i modified the rom? if i want to see how fast is the fan speed rmp in this rom? I think is its now 25-28% and i like to but 20%.

If you want to modify your rom, with fan speed and other stuff,
download RBE (radeon bios editor) for Windows.

With Catalyst Control Center in Windows you can see the card fan rpm also.

Am I to understand that this link of instructions are now obsolete b/c of Cindori's Flashing Tool?

There's now a $5 difference between getting a 4870 and a 4890, I think I'm opting for a 4870 so that it runs cooler/quieter correct?

And even if the saphire comes with dual dvi, for either 4870 or 4890 only one DVI works correct for the mac?

You linked a guide to edit clocks on roms.
In what way is that guide obsolete because of my tool?

Dual DVI works on both 4870 and 4890 in Snow Leopard, but the 2nd DVI is Single Link.

Cindori, sorry wrong link it was this one I was referring to with the multiple software downloads needed:

https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/7473867/

So hopefully the 4890 runs cooler at idle speeds since it's less wattage. I'm going to get the 4890 and 2 "Y" Power Splitter cables.

Oh yeah, those steps are for sure obsolete.

There is a guide link for 4890 in the main post.

just finished implementing QE CI patch for 10.6.2

you might notice it's a bit different, I did not use netkas .pkg but instead made a installer script, so now it takes ~1 second to install

the Download link in first post is updated with new version.

also separated ROM folder - you find it now on

http://groths.se/atiflashingtool/ROMS.zip

so, simple guide for 4890 users for upgrading to 10.6.2:

install 10.6.2
open ati flashing tool, QE_CI from menu
select 10.6.2
Click install
Reboot
