Upgrading from X1900 to 4870 in Mac Pro 1,1
I've spent many many hours exploring the MacRumors forum and other sites on the web, and am finally ready to concede defeat. I purchased a Sapphire SKU 11133-19-20R, on the strength of others' success with it (and the fact that it's included in Cindori's very nice Flashing Tool).
I installed the natit injector, turned off the computer, installed the card, booted up. No video from either port. Turned it off, turned it back on. Got a startup chime, several seconds later got a second one, but still no video. OK, I think, I'll use the iMac Video Update method. With only the 4870 installed, not only is there no video but the computer doesn't show up on my local network. I notice that the cpuB fail light is on. Hmmm, bummer. Well, maybe I can finagle a way to have the X1900 *and* the 4870 installed at the same time, and work locally. I leave the X1900 in the bottom slot, plug the 4870 into the middle of the three upper slots. Power the X1900 from the motherboard. Power the 4870 from the other motherboard connector and from the dangling molex cable that would power a second optical drive. Plug monitor into X1900. Turn on computer, grey screen, apple logo, little marching gear of progress. After a few seconds the gear stops, and nothing proceeds to happen for a while. I notice that cpuA and cpuB fail lights are both on. Double bummer.
I can't install Boot Camp because my hard drives are in a RAID (which Boot Camp does not support) so that option isn't open to me. Can anybody with more experience shed any light on what might be going on, or what I might try? I've done everything I can think of, read everything I can find, and I am clueless...
Thanks so much!
Update: By uninstalling natit, I was able to boot with both the X1900 and the 4870 installed. This time, I have the X1900 in the middle of the upper three slots, and the 4870 in the bottom slot. I use Boeglin's ATIFacelessFlash method; ATIFacelessFlash opens and closes in about a second. I reboot. The X1900 is still working fine, and the 4870 is still not doing anything. I am too scared to use Cindori's ATI Flashing Tool, because it warns me that it will brick my X1900, potentially leaving me with zero working video cards.
