Hello,

I just used your tool after upgrading my MacPro 1,1 (10.6.2) to install QE package.
I have the Sapphire 4890 and after the upgrade I have some strange problems now after the upgrade.

There are "disruptions" which I have no idea why there are here now - I have never had this in 10.6.1 when I installed my card.

Does anybody have the same experiences and have a solution?

Thanks in advance.

I just used Cindori's QE_CI Pkg too and am having problems. Only one of my screens works now even though both are plugged into different graphic cards.

Also, on start up I'm getting very weird distortions. My GPU's fan is spinning like crazy too. I should have waited awhile before I went through with this update.

Can someone explain why none of my other DVI ports are working on both my cards? Only one DVI on my 4890 is working, and the 4870's aren't working at all.

so netkas qe ci does not work either? hm.....

im on 10.6.2 right now with my sapphire , working also dual screen with 2nd screen on my 7300

well if netkas qe ci also does not work then it is problem with driver kexts somewhere

someone, on 10.6.2, that has NOT installed qe_ci patch, please PM me
(i did not backup original kexts, i know, stupid)
until then avoid updating

what kinds of disruptions?

did you download after I fixed bug?

Yes, I downloaded after your bug fix.
Disruptions occur as lines on the screen when I play films in VLC or when I just use Exposé to show all programs.

I resolved it now.

I re-installed 10.6.2 combo update and after reboot I used netkas QE file. Now it works... I don't know why but no screen problems anymore and it is quiet again

yeah I was guessing some OS problems since the QECI patch worked 100% for me

you other ppl who have problems, do the same as yuser but instead use QECI patch in ati flashing tool, so I can be sure to rule out any issues with my patching script.

Going to try this route too

Sounds a bit shaky though to install the update again without "de-installing" the previous 10.6.2 update :/

Upgrading from X1900 to 4870 in Mac Pro 1,1

I've spent many many hours exploring the MacRumors forum and other sites on the web, and am finally ready to concede defeat. I purchased a Sapphire SKU 11133-19-20R, on the strength of others' success with it (and the fact that it's included in Cindori's very nice Flashing Tool).

I installed the natit injector, turned off the computer, installed the card, booted up. No video from either port. Turned it off, turned it back on. Got a startup chime, several seconds later got a second one, but still no video. OK, I think, I'll use the iMac Video Update method. With only the 4870 installed, not only is there no video but the computer doesn't show up on my local network. I notice that the cpuB fail light is on. Hmmm, bummer. Well, maybe I can finagle a way to have the X1900 *and* the 4870 installed at the same time, and work locally. I leave the X1900 in the bottom slot, plug the 4870 into the middle of the three upper slots. Power the X1900 from the motherboard. Power the 4870 from the other motherboard connector and from the dangling molex cable that would power a second optical drive. Plug monitor into X1900. Turn on computer, grey screen, apple logo, little marching gear of progress. After a few seconds the gear stops, and nothing proceeds to happen for a while. I notice that cpuA and cpuB fail lights are both on. Double bummer.

I can't install Boot Camp because my hard drives are in a RAID (which Boot Camp does not support) so that option isn't open to me. Can anybody with more experience shed any light on what might be going on, or what I might try? I've done everything I can think of, read everything I can find, and I am clueless...

Thanks so much!

Update: By uninstalling natit, I was able to boot with both the X1900 and the 4870 installed. This time, I have the X1900 in the middle of the upper three slots, and the 4870 in the bottom slot. I use Boeglin's ATIFacelessFlash method; ATIFacelessFlash opens and closes in about a second. I reboot. The X1900 is still working fine, and the 4870 is still not doing anything. I am too scared to use Cindori's ATI Flashing Tool, because it warns me that it will brick my X1900, potentially leaving me with zero working video cards.

ATI Flashing Tool is using the exact same method as Boeglin.

And yes, cards have been bricked.

What is the problem here is that Natit have been reported to fail by alot of ppl.

in the 4890 ultimate thread, try the red text to get natit running

@Cindori

I really hope you get your awesome tool sorted with this since it's a killer app!

don't think there is a problem. since ppl were getting this error with netkas pkg too, it was clearly something funky about the update, my patch script should be fine.

I guess I got lucky that I didn't brick my X1900 then. On the other hand, unlucky that I've got a bunch of electronics sitting uselessly next to my computer still. I tried installing the Natit files linked to in the red text in the 4890 thread, to no avail. I then found two other Natit packages and figured why not try those? One was the basic 4/22 Natit package, the other was the Mini_natit from http://netkas.org/?p=103 - both of those left me with black screens and revved-up video card fans.

One thing that I have noticed is that the DVI port close to the motherboard yields a blank black screen, as though the monitor is getting some kind of signal, while the farther DVI port results in the "I am not plugged in to a computer" image on the monitor. Useful information? Who knows!

i will make custom natit script for you when I come home, dont worry.

in the meantime, tell me your os version.

also the farthest away DVI port is only single link, maybe that is why your screen does not recognize it (im guessing your screen is larger then 24"?)

The screen is 24", running at 1920x1200. I was running 10.6.1 for all the attempts, and have since updated to 10.6.2. A bit more information: The video card's model number is 100279-1GL; I don't know if model numbers are exactly correlated with SKUs. It seems like they should be, but I think I saw someone claiming to have a 100259 that was also a 11133-19-20R. Also, when I start up with both cards installed and the X1900 providing video, if I look in the System Profiler at PCI cards, it tells me there was an error gathering information about PCI cards. If I open up the Expansion Slot Utility, it correctly recognizes the X1900 in one slot, and recognizes a generic ATI video card in the other slot.

Cindori, if you can do something that gets this working for me, I will bless your children and your children's children. If you have any or want any, that is. :)

here we go:

http://groths.se/atiflashingtool/sapphire_new_edition.zip

unzip
open Natit for Sapphire New edition.app
wait for success message

now try shut down and remove x1900
insert 4890 and try boot

if it boots (1 chime) but screen stays black, try reconnect DVI or switch port

if you succeed in getting display, open ATI Flashing Tool

Flash using the rom "modified.rom" provided in the zip

Then, go to Injector from menu
Remove natit

Reboot, hold your breath.

report back how it goes.

i dont have any children :), but if it works for you and you feel like contributing, drop a 5$ in my tip jar

So I just got my Sapphire 4890 new edition from Newegg today and am looking to install it and flash it etc. I have NOT yet updated to 10.6.2 so I was wondering if I should do that first BEFORE doing the ROM flash procedure or if I should stay with 10.6.1 and worry about updating later.

Also should I use the new "saffire_new_edition" files posted in the previous post for flashing the ROM and Natit?

Hi Cindori

Just upgraded OSX10.6.2. Had the same issues as Amigaz & yuser

I reinstalled the OSX10.6.2 update and QE_CI_Exotic patch 10.6.2.pkg from netkas and all is working perfectly. There may be an issue with your upgrade to QE_CI patch 10.6.2

Thank again for all you efforts

Thanks, Cindori. I installed Natit from your package, shut down, swapped out the X1900 for the 4870, hit power. No startup chime, not much of anything really. CpuA and CpuB fail lights are on.

Turned the machine back off, re-seated video card, turned back on. Still no chime, but lots of hard drive churning. Black screen. Waited a minute or two, unplugged and re-plugged monitor into jack closer to motherboard. Still a black screen. Tried other jack, and got the monitor's "not plugged into anything" display. Noticed at this point that the CpuB fail light was on (it hadn't been at first).

Turned off, turned back on, exact same story. The CpuB fail light came on after a couple minutes, not in response to my having done anything.

Put the X1900 back in, rebooted. Got the usual message that the computer had been turned off due to a problem, so it had been "on" in some sense with the 4870 installed. Just no video showing...

Thanks for trying! If you have any other ideas, I'm all ears. If you have ideas that actually get it working, that's worth more than a $5 tip to me... ;)

I know that ppl using netkas.pkg from start also have had to reapply OSX update and then do qeci pkg again.

What I want is someone to try

patch through ati flashing tool
if error:
re apply osx update
patch through ati flashing tool again

work? yes/no
yes=nothing wrong with my script
no=error with my script, = I can start fixing

how are you powering the 4890?

did you try it in windows?

If this was directed to me, it's a 4870, not a 4890. I'm powering it from the two PCI-E power jacks on the motherboard. The cables are both fine, as are the jacks (I've tested both of them independently with the X1900). The fan on the card spins up, so it's at least receiving some power. I haven't tried it in Windows - the only machine I have available has a 280W power supply, and I'm a little nervous to plug this behemoth of a card into such a feeble supply.

Of course, if that was directed to one of these folks who actually has a 4890, I'll shut up. :)

Edit: I just noticed in your instructions for the nice little package you made for me, you said to install the 4890. Could this be the reason it didn't work? Or should the version of Natit you included also support a 4870?

oh...........

yes that pkg was for a 4890. my mistake...

i'll make a new one for you tomorrow.
