Chew Toy McCoy:

You give Apple underserved credit if you think their failure to optimize the iPad for the larger display has anything to do with antagonizing the buyers.

Nothing more than not putting any real resources towards making the iPad and iOS work better together.

Examples of this?...all that screen real estate which could accommodate more icons per row or the ability to set split-windows apps more easily.

We're supposed to be happy with iPhone apps on the larger iPad screen? Or settle for rudimentary split-windows?

We could have so much more, but they won't deliver it!

The only thing worse would've been magnifying the size of the icons so that they were the same size relative to the screen. That would make the "Fisher Price My First Tablet" look of the iPad Pro complete.

I don't need a new IPP 12.9. What I need is an operating system for the IPP12.9 that actually makes sense and makes use of the full hardware of the IPP.

I understand some users’ need for that, but that’s not one of my needs. I basically got it as a laptop replacement for a laptop I rarely use and I couldn’t tell you how many times I touched the screen on my MBA and obviously it didn’t do anything because it’s not a touch screen. When I need real computing power I use my 27” iMac.

I’m getting seriously annoyed. I don’t have a 12.9 iPad yet and I think the 2 is going to be a far better success than the 1 which will also motivate more developers and many are waiting just like myself, but every time I’m on the fence and considering just pulling the trigger on a 1 there’s some “2 should be just around the corner” rumor quickly followed by “Actually, no it is not”. Toss in there is absolutely no historical data to even close to predicting a release.

I realize you don’t always have to have the latest and greatest but at some point it’s just dumb to pull the trigger on a current model because the new one should be soon and they will likely reduce the price on the current model. It seems like every 3 months I’m having this same fit…and no real news…and no new release…and each time feeling like then in another 3 months the 2 will definitely be out. And no.
That's why I pulled the trigger with 12.9 year knowing the next iPad Pro would arrive but it looks like it was delayed. Just buy it if you need it.

4GB ram is not gimped on an iOS device.
You're the first person I've encountered that has complained about the stylus feeling "poor", buggy palm rejection, and 4 GB of RAM being too low (though I would agree it would be too low if it was running a desktop OS) on the iPad Pro.

I have head some comments say "it's not quite as good as a Wacom" but not "poor"...
Well, it wouldn't be an Apple forum if we didn't have our daily dose of hyperbole. :D

thx for sharing your opinions, as a art creation device for me it is lacking- and is gimped. i cant open most of my files from my painting computer on the ipad pro because they are larger than the ram limit. im glad its enough ram for you, but i need more for painting. i cant do A1/A2 documents with a decent amount of layers. this is only something the size of a poster printed. that is enough for comics, illustrations and amateur work that only goes on the web but not enough for all artists. the ipad pro and procreate has serious power , once apple puts a decent amount of ram in it it will be a painting powerhouse.

i know plenty of people who dont like the apple pencil. most of my friends are professional artists who have been using pen computers for decades. apple pencil is not impressive from that standpoint. slick screen. generic feeling pressure curves. its a nice low end cheap solution and a good first try by apple, but it needs to be refined more, IMO

I have a 2013 retina MBP with 4gb of ram that never lags or stutters, yet an iPad needs more than 4gb of ram?
yes i need more ram. for big canvas sizes and lots of layers. that MBP is a joke for art are you kidding me?

i have a 2017 wacom mobile studio pro 16 with 16GB of ram. this is bare minimum for a tablet that does work, IMO. I had to sell the ipad pro 12.9 it wouldnt even open my files.

my big tablet on 27" wacom has 128GB of ram in the workstation. i paint, and do digital sculpting as my hobby. for work i do illustration and graphic design for now.

if the ipad had 8gb ram i could at least paint on it......
[doublepost=1485199183][/doublepost]
What tablet is NOT "gimped" for your purposes?
anything with 8gb of ram or more. the surface gets the job done. any wacom tablet pc. the quad core sony vio z canvas.
[doublepost=1485199266][/doublepost]any of the 2 in 1 laptops with pen's (many to choose from)

an ipad with 8gb of ram would do it.

Your original post said nothing about art, nor was I suggesting that an MBP would be good for art. My point was, if 4gb of ram can handle a decent workload on macOS, it is more than enough for an iOS device. It sounds like your work is far more advanced than what the iPad Pro was designed for. Most people take notes, use as a media device, email, web browsing, and basic drawing. For all of that, 4gb of ram is more than sufficient.

When you say it's "gimped" it sounds like you're saying there is fault with the device. It sounds like, for you, the iPad Pro is simply not the right tool.

Apple, or any other company, will never build a computer the suits everybody. I don't think needing a minimum of 8 GB of RAM is "typical" - even of artists.

I get that the way you work isn't supported by the iPad, but I also see a LOT of great art being done on the iPad

What app are you using?
From your video it looks like you may still have multi-touch gestures enabled, which can be a problem for resting your hand on the screen.

You can disable multi-touch overall, or in some apps (like sketchbook) you can disable within the app.

Part of palm rejection is going to be handled by the app.

I draw the same way and I don't have NEARLY. The issues you experience in the video. I mainly use sketchbook Pro, and Adobe sketch.

That video is from Dec 2015... approximately a month after the Pencil was released. Not only was the Pencil in short supply, but there were many apps that still had not been updated to support it. Of those that did support it at the time, some of them didn't support it well.

I hate sounding like an Apple apologist, but this notion that single user experience is an accurate reflection of the Apple Pencil experience is absurd. Especially one so "out there" as depicted in the video. if THAT experience was typical, there would be a great outcry by customers.

Good catch sracer!

That kind of issue is typical with third party stylii, but I never had that kind of issue with the Apple Pencil.

Ironically, the Apple Pencil works better in OneNote for me on the iPad Pro than on the Surface Pro 3 with the Pro 4 stylus!

Its rumoured that the new ipad pro 12.9" only to feature standard 8 gb RAM, quad core , the two high cores to have 2.6ghz, true tone display, wide gamut, brighter lighter

I am in the same boat as you, i am due for my upgrade and I cannot wait for the new iPad Pro 2. But I must wait because the new iPad Pro is literally a few months away, who knows maybe sooner? I suspect Apple are going to make it more geared for productivty than ever before. I think they are now going to start differentiating the iOS software between iPhone and iPad and that is going to be a game changer.

....bottom line, you have to wait!

I have the 1st gen iPad Pro 12.9. I genuinely can't think of anything that could sway me away to upgrade after a year.

Ok maybe to throw money at apples large bank account.

After retina displays came the 12.9 was the ONLY different iPad with the larger screen, keyboard and pen. What more could be added? Mouse? Retina is sharp and Apple doesn't mess with more. Or radical changes. So what now?

I've long decided that I'm keeping this 12.9 iPad Pro until Apple gives a future model 8gb of ram. Until then this beast, on ios9, does everything I want it to do and then some.

Apple Insider keeps a nice Mac/iPad/etc price tracker for different models. It looks like the 12.9 is back-ordered/sold out virtually everywhere. Compare the chart to the 9.7. Is this typical for the 12.9, or does this look like a supply chain flush associated with an imminent release?

It's no surprise that the 12.9 is slated for an update. So why then are you phrasing it as a question?

The question is will Apple announce something in March or much later.

Either way, I'm fine with waiting. Some of you others, not so much.

It seems to be sold out everywhere here in New Zealand too, and has been for the last couple of weeks. I was also wondering if stocks are being run down prior to the release of a new model.

I really want to buy within the next 6 weeks, so the timing is looking a bit awkward for me.

Im now in the same boat. I found someone selling a new ipad pro 12.9", 128GB cellular for $700. This is 170 cheaper than refurb prices from apple, and definitely on par with the used range sale prices. Though now with some rumors speculate March for the 2nd gen, and others calling for a push later due to supply delays, Im not sure what to do. I wish we had a better feel for what the next gen was offering, but I havent seen any valid rumors on what these could be. I might just pull the trigger, and hope to get most of my money back if I decide to sell it once the new one is released.

I think the questions to ask yourself are:

Do I need one now?

Is there anything about the current 12.9 iPad Pro that I find deficient?

How would I feel if I bought one now and the 2nd gen was released 2 months from now?

How long do I plan on keeping it?

If that iPP really is NEW, then that is a killer deal, and if I was looking to get one (I already have one) I wouldn't hesitate to buy it ASAP. But then again, there is nothing in the rumor grapevine about the 2nd gen that interests me so that makes the decision easier. :)

Only thing I wasn’t really expecting is to me now the 9.7 iPad feels like the oddball size, like anything the 12.9 is just too big for would be better served on the iPad Mini. As an example reading articles or books seems like a better fit on the Mini for me.

I felt the same about the Mini after working on the 12.9 iPad Pro for a few months. The 12.9 iPad is the perfect size for drawing, however, the Mini is perfect for everything else.

What's your bets for anyone actually upgrading the current Smart Keyboard won't be compatible, the 29w charger will but a USB type C to USB type C cable will be required. You heard it here first... possibly. :)

I am waiting for another big sale to occur before making the plunge. I have seen some used ones and meh light damage, not fantastic prices, and still not the configuration I need.

I have a rMBP and it is my workhorse but want to converge to a device that has more portability and note taking functions in the 12.9 Pro at work.
