You give Apple underserved credit if you think their failure to optimize the iPad for the larger display has anything to do with antagonizing the buyers.
Nothing more than not putting any real resources towards making the iPad and iOS work better together.
Examples of this?...all that screen real estate which could accommodate more icons per row or the ability to set split-windows apps more easily.
We're supposed to be happy with iPhone apps on the larger iPad screen? Or settle for rudimentary split-windows?
We could have so much more, but they won't deliver it!
