maybe not. maybe they are gonna reveal a new iPad Pro with colors

In a tweet, the leaker posted an image of Apple's logo used for marketing the upcoming event and an image of the retro rainbow Apple logo alongside the colorful lineup of G3 iMacs. Apple leaker Jon Prosser previously reported that these upcoming iMacs would debut in various colors, a throwback move to the G3 iMac.

Beyond an array of colors, Bloomberg has reported that the first major redesign of the iMac since 2012 will take inspiration from the Pro Display XDR, with no chin and narrower side bezels.

Apple is working on two new versions of the iMac to replace its existing 21.5-inch and 27-inch models. l0vetodream recently suggested that one of the new models will be bigger than the existing 27-inch iMac.

My iMac is 10 years now and I'm pretty proud of that, I think Apple can be proud of that as well.
My 2010 27" iMac is still running Mojave ... heh heh. The original AMD graphic card decided to call it quits 1.5 years ago, so I replaced it with a GTX765M, replaced the HDD with a SATA SSD, and installed Mojave.

iMac's build quality is top notch. I find no reason to upgrade (for the stuffs that I use it for) other than lusting for the M1 Macs. Can't wait for the event coming up later and see if the rumoured M1 iMacs will see the light of day.

Hardware is still fine here but it's the software that is becoming more and more of an issue.

For example:

- I recently tried to open Numbers and Pages documents on my iMac that I previously edited on my iPad. I got a message saying that I needed to upgrade Numbers and Pages. That required me to upgrade to higher OS and when I try to do that it says my hardware doesn't support it anymore.

- I mainly use iCloud storage and I was looking for a way to share documents and folders with other people in my family. You can easily do that with folder sharing if you have Catalina.

I have been looking forward to a new silicon iMac as well but I'm not sure if I would be getting me one of the first batch or wait a bit. When you look at the bluetooth issues they had with the Mac Mini, they really took their time to fix that and I would be seriously frustrated if that happened to me, especially when you spend 2k on a maxed out iMac.

Totally agree, re: all-in-one. Desktop-only computing seems so... Why?
Sure, a lot of my personal computing happens atop a “desk,” but that “desk” can be nearly any surface of nearly anywhere I find myself. But my preferences are not everyone’s. And vice versa. Thank goodness. Rock your all-in-ones!
It all boils down to productivity and ergonomics.

I have not found any better place in my house to do something for an extensive amount of time then at my desk (and at my desktop computer). The desk height is ideal, my screen estate is large enough and it's positioned at the ideal height, I have an good chair and can sit up straight without getting pain somewhere after a short amount of time, I have a large keyboard and a good pointing device.

Any other place in my house requires me to adapt to it and there are compromises. Either the chair is not ideal or the screen is smaller or the keyboard is compact. Don't get me wrong, I am able to manage but simply not as comfortably and productively.

If you are constantly on the go, you don't have a choice but "any area" (in the home or office) will not be taking over the desk area (or desktop computer ) any time soon if you need to do some work.

Agree. The ergonomics a more formal, intended setting can offer is great. I have that as well. Love it. But it would be weird, to me, if that formal setting were the only place I could use my computer. The flexibility a non desktop affords, is something I appreciate and prefer. Again, to each their own. Cheers!

I went from being a 5K iMac owner to a Mac mini hooked to a Pro Display XDR owner.

The only benefit of the iMac was a bit less clutter.

And when the 5K iMac had bluetooth and backlight bleed issues, I had to take into Apple several times.

Now that was a pain. Getting a Mac mini serviced will be much easier (assuming Apple can "service" an M1 Mac).
1. You forgot to mention price as a benefit for the iMac. The cheapest XDR display is about 5.5k Euro so let's say 6.2k including the cheapest Mac Mini M1
2. For some it's about getting the M1 asap, for others it's about getting an Mx in the same form factor as an iMac.
3. Taking in an XDR display into Apple for servicing is about the same as an iMac (in terms of effort), you're just assuming that if something is going to fail, it's going to be the mac mini
4. You will be able to hook up an alternative screen to the mac mini in case of a display failure, that is a benefit.

Thought about that many times, especially when I purchased my latest iPad. Should I go for the larger iPad, get a keyboard and get rid of the iMac or should I stick with the smaller one.

Given what I do today on tablets and desktop computers and given the choice to only pick one: I would pick the desktop. It sure as hell would make watching TV again more engaging 😄

I keep hearing that this iMac is going to be a fun cheap low-end iMac that appeals to "students and kids" but is there really a market for that? I graduated from college last year and the vast, vast majority of students I knew had laptops and tablets. The few who had desktops had gaming PCs that they built themselves. I don't think I met a single person with an iMac. To make the iMac product line mirror the iPad product line doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me (the iPad has a much wider appeal). But I guess we shall see.

Don't expect new iMacs today wouldn't make sense for apple. People need to understand there are already M1 computers that beat intel / AMD so until they can beat apple they have no need. Plus, everyone would flock to iMacs instead of current models thus eroding sales of existing M1 Macs. Apple has a history of dragging things out just look at iMac Pro, Mac Pro etc. You'll probably have to wait til September !! and can almost guarantee it given the shortage of electronics throughout the world.
You’re funny

8gb of RAM as standard needs to go back in time and die in 2015. This is 2021, 16gb should be minimum. With that said, I totally would not be surprised if apple went ahead and stuck 8gb on there with absolutely no way to upgrade it.

What did I tell you all. Still 8gb of RAM. Sigh

I don't see it happening. The colors worked with the original iMac because they were outrageous; nobody wants a mint chocolate chip iMac. They want lime!

Also, the point of the colorful iMac was trying to make computers friendly and accessible to get people online; nobody who is entering computing is going to buy an iMac.
Guess I was wrong! Whoops!

Come to Papa. Glad to see L0vetodream mentioning this.
Here are the specs and pricing that I expect for the base model 24” iMac:
$1299 starting price with at least 4K display. Maybe 4.5K
M1 chip
256GB SSD
8GB RAM (soldered on)
Two USB-4 ports.
One cooling fan.

ok, can you do lotto numbers next?

I don’t understand the fascination with an all in one desktop. Apart from being super cool, wouldn’t it be better to have a best in class apple monitor and the computer unit separate. I can change/upgrade either one as required. If space clutter is a problem you could always create neat ways of hanging a Mac mini on the back of the monitor. There is so much waste at the end of life of an iMac. It’s a shame that Apple can shout from the top of solar roof tops but not care about the environment for real.
A mini has space constraints an iMac doesn’t have. You talk about waste as if all there’s housed in an iMac is a mini. Well there’s more than a mini and there’s even a monitor. Best of class monitor plus mini can be seen as waste too. Even 2 cables more are wasteful. Of cables and field view.
