The smart covers are crap. Useless and overpriced. They don't provide any protection whatsoever.

Never understood the problem with the marking of the screen. Clearly it can be easily wiped off. The only way it will scratch the screen is if the cover, while folded open, is placed on a table with coarse particles and that transfers onto the screen when closed.

As for the marking on the side, yes, it marked the side of my iPad 2 so with the new one, as noted above, scotch tape does the trick.

I really really HAD to have a smart cover to go with my new iPad. However after a bit of reading on the web I decided to return it. Here's why for people who are not aware of its problems:

1) The metal hinge of the smart cover can mark the aluminium casing of the iPad over time.

2) The magnets can cause black spots to appear on the metal hinge and aluminium casing of the iPad, these do not come off. In fact one appeared on the magnet part of my hinge after only 2 days of use.

3) The soft microfibre lining of the smart cover leaves permanent lines down the screen, they can be wiped away at first but after prolonged use they are visible when the screen is off.

Im really gutted as I loved the concept, however I must admit the iPad was a bit clunky to hold with it on.

Can anyone direct me to any good folio cases with a magnetic cover that also wakes the iPad just like the smart cover does?

I've had one for a year. None of your fears are true. The only thing I've seen is some marking or wear on the hinge of the cover. The iPad is pristine after a year.

They aren't useless, but they are definitely overpriced. Especially the "leather" one (and I use the term "leather" loosely).

I agree to a point. I have a flawless iPad, no yellow tint, no flaws around the bezel. So if the smart cover damages it I then have to go through the whole quality control routine with the replacements. Plus the Apple store is two cities away.

I've had a smart cover since day one of the iPad 2. The black marks wipe off, and there are no permanent lines on the screen. I'm not sure where you are getting your information but it's not true at all.

On my iPad2 I definitely got the little scratch lines on the metal edge of the iPad, where the hinge rotates. They were permanent, but pretty small.

I had to have that iPad replaced for a different reason and at that time I had Ghost Armor installed on the new one. This seemed to have just enough protection to avoid the lines.

My smart cover (black leather) scratched the back of my iPad where the magnet bar attached. There were 2 noticeable gouges on the side. I took it to an Apple Store and they exchanged it. Having said that I mine is a fairly isolated incident, just check the magnet bar to ensure there aren't any little protrusions and you should be fine.

I have a leather Smart Cover on my iPad 2, and there's no way it could mark the iPad case. The Smart Cover magnetic mount, and its hinges have nylon inserts that prevent metal to metal contact. I suppose you could scratch the iPad if you're not careful when attaching the cover.

The inside of the leather Smart Cover is soft suede. I always clean the glass and brush the cover with my hand if it's been open for a while, and haven't had any marks. Also, it would help if you clean any surface, before you put the iPad down with the cover folded around the back.

- Always roll the Smart Cover in on itself, so the PVC/leather side is the one you hold/the one that touches the table.

That tip makes sense from a "keep the cover clean" point of view, but if you do that, the cover doesn't work as a stand. It'll collapse at the smallest shift or bump. :(

I do make sure any surface I place the cover on is clean, and if I notice any lines on my iPad screen, I immediately wipe it off. People who say they have permanent lines must not clean their iPad screen very often.

Yeah, it seems like it would be much more logical if the made it work with the PVC side being down when you use it as a stand. That's how I first tried it, as it made no sense to me to have the microfiber side down, but it is not stable at all. I mean, if I were using it at a restaurant or something, the microfiber will get filthy pretty quick.
Not the best design IMHO. I only paid $24 for mine, otherwise I would return it.

I am an iPad 1 owner who plans to upgrade to the iPad 3(excuse me, the "New" iPad! lol)...and I also have the original black micro fiber Apple ipad case which I love the design of. I like it more than the new Apple iPad "covers" which don't protect the back of the iPad.

What I'd like to know is that will the iPad 3...er "new" ipad fit in the original Apple ipad case? I only ask, because when the 2nd ipad came out it was thinner than the ipad 1 and therefore slightly loose in the original case, but this new ipad is suppose to be slightly thicker than the ipad 2, so i was thinking it would then fit perfectly?

Does anyone know? Thanks! :)

Indeed the original iPad case works fine with one minor modification..

Firstly, the new iPad fits a little loose but that can be corrected with inserting within, a thin inexpensive cushion style mousepad (trimmed to fit).. Not only does the iPad now fit perfectly but it also offers more protection with very little weight or bulk added..

No modification is really needed for the speaker, on-off switch, volume switch or charging port.. YMMV

It`s a simple and very effective mod and it just works..

Though its not necessary, I suppose if you really wanted to get into it, you could do some very simple trimming to the button areas and hole punch a couple of extra holes on the backside for the speaker..

If you are inclined to use the rear camera, again use a hole punch and done deal..

I, like many others, also purchased a smart cover for my new iPad and I'm actually going to return it. I know Apple pushes for simplicity in its design for all things however I think they went a little too simplistic for this smart cover. For those that want to maintain the slim profile of the iPad then so be it but I'm more concerned with usability as well as protection. I wound up getting two cases, one that's just a back cover and one that's padfolio type case. I got the black leather smart cover and, while it looks very nice, the simple fact that there's no protection for the back and these random threads popping up about marring the screen and what not, all make me reconsider the use of having a smart cover. Overall, I'm happy with my padfolio type cover as it works in landscape mode quite well as well offer moderate protection for both the front and rear of the iPad. Think I'll get one of those skinny cases or some other case that has some back protection along with a smart cover attached to it.

Your loss. I did get the black spots on the cover's hinge, but NEVER did I get any kind of mark on the actual iPad. And the lines left on the iPad screen are not permanent... that'd absolutely ridiculous.

permanent lines on the screen? hahaha. no. i used it every day for many months without a single issue. i did not like having to clean the lines off all the time, but when i tried another tablet without a cover (asus transformer prime) i was suddenly aware of how much i missed the smart cover. brilliant design.

as for the hinges, they did not cause me damage, but i can see how they might. they rub a lot, and i am not thrilled with that part of the cover. still, it is a tiny price to pay, and you may find (as i did) that it is a non-issue.

I have read a few times in other threads that it does not. I HAVE the old iPad with that case, but have not tried.

Note: the old case does not have the camera hole in the back, nor any provision for new placement of the speaker (along the beveled bottom rather than ON the flat bottom)

Mike

Can't forget the mic hole on top in the middle, instead of the top on the left on the original one. The original iPad case is a no no for the new iPad.

This is a crock of crap! I have had the same Smart Cover on my iPad 2 since the day it was released and the third generation iPad without one mark one the case or lines one the screen that won't come off.

I am not saying it perfect. I have the leather one and have seen pictures of the polyurethane one falling apart. I have taken very good care of mine and it still looks new. I take it to work every day and to every meeting and out of town on every trip.

As long as you don't let your kids beat it up, dog chew on it or through it around it will last and not damage your iPad.

It fits but is still loose. Your iPad will stay in but there's definitely some wiggle room.
