The original iPhone 3.5" screens 3:2 aspect ratio was the perfect small screen smartphone size IMO... I wasn't thrilled with the 4-inch 5 cause all they did was extend the screen vertically. Only ended up with a 5S because my 4S battery wasn't so hot after 2 years, but the 5S always felt too narrow.

The iPhone 6 adds some much needed width expansion, and *sighs* the whole world insists on that stupid 16:9 aspect ratio for HD/movies, but I'd rather have a less "widescreen" aspect ratio myself.
Agreed. If Apple made a 3:2 3.5" iPhone with iPhone 6 Plus internals, that's what I'd get. Unfortunately, if you want new hardware, it's not like you have much of a choice and the really smallish phones on Android are even more gimped, anyway.

How do you know those who said they didn't want a big phone are exactly the same ones who are getting the 6 plus?

There are not hard facts with numbers, but in my experience out of my 3 friends to pre-order an iPhone 6....all 3 of them pre-ordered the 6+. 2 of them had complained in the past to me about how big my Android phone's screen was.

I would tell them "Don't knock it till you try it.".

That said, I ordered an iPhone 6 but I do find it comical how many people wouldn't just call Apple out and say "You know what? The phone is too small.". They felt the need to say it was the perfect size and not think for themselves.

That's obviously not every single iPhone owner, but in my experience there were a ton who said this.

LOL, that's nonsense. I have read and talked to so many people over the years who insisted that the iPhones were the perfect size and there was no need for anything larger. Sure I can't prove that any of them upgraded but I'm guessing that many of them were among the 4 million preorders. The Apple fanboys say anything to defend Apple, their screens were perfect at 3.5 & 4 inches and are now perfect at 4.7 & 5.5 inches. Nothing new here.

Just a heads up, I agree with you. Keep in mind though you are on an Apple message board and you will see a lot of people defend them no matter what.

It'd be the same if you went to an Android message board and made a similar topic there. Every company has fanboys and it is what it is.

I know exactly what you experienced though.

I owned the iPhone, 3G, 3GS then when the 4 was announced I switched to Android for the EVO 4G. It had a 4.7" screen and I was berated by two of my friends who were/are huge Apple fans.

I later switched back to iPhone when the 5S came out because I really liked where they were heading with iOS7 and everyone knew a year later the 6 would have a larger screen anyways.

I have to admit I was one of those smug iPhone owners who scoffed at people holding gigantic phones to their ears. "Looks like he's talking on an iPad Mini!" Yet here I am, waiting for the delivery of an iPhone 6+. But in my defense, I'm not a small man, 6'4", so I won't look as silly with a huge phone as all those height-challenged folk do. Or so I tell myself.

And to be fair, it's still going to look ridiculous when held up to your head. But if it's what you want and fits your usage, who cares what it looks like when you make a call. Plus, you'll be in good company; there are plenty of giant phone users, now.

In my own experience, many more than 3 of my friends either said they didn't want a larger phone and so ordered the 6, and those who said they wanted a larger phone were surprised at how big the 6+ would feel and so also ordered the 6. But this proves nothing.

Anecdotal evidence from a ridiculously small sample out of hundreds of millions of iPhone owners means nothing either way. My point was that the OP could not know that a significant number of those who said they didn't want a larger screen are the same ones who are now buying the larger screen. "Significant" is vague, but again, out of literally hundreds of millions of iPhone owners, anecdotal evidence from ten, a hundred, even several thousand people cannot be considered significant to draw a conclusion toward either direction. It cannot prove a general trend of hypocrisy or a "fanboy" mentality.

I don't have poll numbers. But I've been here long enough. And the small screen drums were deafening. The parroting of the Apple talking point on why 3.5" was the perfect size.

Reminds me of the first iPhone. It was releases without copy and paste. Remember? What I remember is the Apple fans actually saying how this was a good thing. Oh. My. God.

I'm just happy Apple finally decided to produce a big HD phone. Two years late, but I'm still excited. I'm looking forward to the iOS experience on a big phone.

It's obvious that there always has been very vocal people on both sides. Many iPhone users, self-proclaimed fanboys even, demanded bigger screens. Some switched to Android and keep letting people know about it here. To me, those posts were also "deafening", so many as to be spammy.

So it is not outrageous to note that some seem to follow Apple blindly. However, my position is that nothing we can derive from a forum like this or from our friends can prove a general trend. Therefore, it is unfair to make broad accusations, although the accusations indeed apply to some individuals. That's all I'm saying.

It can't prove it, but you can't disprove either it so what it your point exactly again?

I never made a broad statement like the OP did. I even said "I have no numbers" and "In my own experience".

Never claimed anything as fact, but just because there is no statistical evidence of such a thing does not mean it doesn't exist. It's not like people keep track of when fanboys are whiny and when they're not.

So yes, this whole argument/discussion is utterly pointless but I know for a fact that a lot of people were praising 3.5" as the perfect size for a phone and anything else was too big. Glad they get to enjoy a bigger phone at the end of the day though, now that it's convenient to.

That's no phone... that's a space station.
It's too big to be a space station.
Comes a size where it's not a phone, it's a tablet with a voice app.
That dwarfs the iPhone in every stretch of the imagination in terms of size. That's crazy big.
OMG, it's ****** huge!!!

On a similar note, stock prices for makers of "man purses" skyrocketed today; as sales are expected to get a jump from people looking for ways to carry this beast around. :D
I want something that will fit in my pocket and not make me look like I am happy to see everyone all the time. These new phones are getting crazy.
I think a 7" tablet is more possible that a 5.5" iPhone.
Way way too big. I wouldn't want that in my pocket. I have an iPad already.
What is the point of that? At that size how much more difficult would it be to put my iPad in my pocket and just use Skype on it. Its almost as though they've never seen those spoof videos of people holding phones larger then their heads screaming into them. They might as well un-retire the old brick phones that weighed 80lbs through a screen on them and call it a laptop phone.
Holy crap! Look at the size of that f*er! As a guy, I like to be able to easily pocket my phone, especially when I go out at night. I like when I can sit down and the phone fits easily in my pocket. I would be forced to buy a holster or backpack harness if I bought that phone.
WOW that thing is huge! I think it will be great for people who want a tablet, that makes phone calls! Why didn't they just bump it up to 7 inches from the near 5 it is now and make it compete with the kindle fire tablet.

It looks like the trend that used to be , smaller, faster, lighter is now....., bigger, brighter and mini-tablet! While I am sure it will eventually cycle back to phones that are small enough to be functional phones and not approaching the size of an envelope, it amazes me that they are making such HUGE phones!
5 inches is massive when holding a device you will use frequently in your hands. I've tried usin 4.5-5 inch phones, it's great for watching video, but besides that it's no fun to carry or hold in the hand.

I've found the iPhone to be the perfect balance. 4 inches is likely the sweetspot for everyday general use. It's all about balance folks.
Design is good, but my GOD that thing is too damn big. 4.8 inches screen alone?! I shouldnt have to buy gangster size XXXL jeans just to fit the thing into my pockets.
The size is actually laughable. Your definitely stretching the definition of phone.

Sweet! I got he Galaxy III, it's so awesome you can't put it in your pocket but thats good, everyone will be forced to see it's awesomeness.
:D
4.8" is way too big. I think 4" is the perfect size (and 3.5" is good too).

Early numbers are indicating that the iPhone 6 Plus was the first to sell through pre-orders. For years iPhone users swore up one side and down the other that they didn't want a larger screen, the iPhone screen was perfect. Boy did that change quickly. I just find it amusing to see how quickly people change their tune when Apple makes something official.

I don't remember those people, actually. I've been calling for a bigger screen on iPhones since the 1.0 release and was quite vocally disappointed by the "bigger" 5 screen. Still not big enough. Honestly? I think your post and the posts of a lot of people making this same "observation" are hogwash. Unless you can show the overwhelming number of threads here about how no one wants bigger screens I'm inclined to think you and the others are talking out your hats.

Wow. Yeah. One thread and quotes from 14 people on a board with membership in the thousands.

Cherry picking. Proves exactly nothing.

Neat bit of detective work. But just for fun, I did a search on several of the usernames and most of them haven't posted here in over a year, so who knows if they've changed their tune or not. Though I will say that there was one guy you quoted who was probably the most negative of the bunch (Meandmunch) and his name did come up in a search and it looks like he preordered an iPhone 6 (he didn't specify which model).

As for me, I don't think you'll find any quotes from me disparaging the big-screened phones. I almost left iOS over it. The iPhone 5 gave me the bare minimum of extra space to keep me on board, but I still wanted more. I'm glad to see these new 6's *FINALLY* arrive and will most likely be getting a 6+. Unfortunately, I haven't been happy with what Ive did to the iOS UI. Still, I love my Mac and love the interoperability that being in the Apple ecosystem offers, so I'll probably stick around for a while longer.

I should add, though, that it's also possible that a lot of us who are salivating for these new phones will end up being unhappy about the usability and portability of them. When I got my iPhone 5 I liked the added screen size (and wanted more), but I *did* notice a decrease in one-handed usability and found it to be top-heavy when trying to type one-handed on it. I have to think these 6's will make that even harder and more dangerous (i.e., dropping it and shattering the screen). Especially since Ive still has a fascination with shiny, slippery metal and glass.

Yeah, but not as vocally as the Apple faithful. The parroting of the Apple talking points would have made the White House press secretary proud.

I've already learned to accept this as part of the charm of MacRumors. Actually it is very entertaining. And you occasionally get a good post and learn something.

I mean, I suppose it depends on perspective, right? I've been reading these boards for years. Long before I got around to creating an account and I guess the "fanboi" posts don't generally ping my radar that hard. Apple zombies have been acting like that since at least the time when I got involved with Apple products way back in 1989. Meanwhile Apple bashers have been right there to bust their bubbles... and to throw tons of rank red herrings, straw men and whatnot the whole time. This is nothing new. I don't think it really stands as any kind of "gotcha" moment that some people bought the hype. Plenty didn't too.

The more things change...

If you have good memory you can spot quite a few people that were bashing the bigger screens specially the likes of the Note 3 that now have pre-ordered the 6 plus lol.

The funny thing is the new iPhone 6 and 6 plus are the bigger phones.

Apple zombies! I love it! Can you believe that's the first time I read that? And it's so much more accurate than fanboys...

Apple zombies. George Romero would be proud.

I foolishly bought an S3 over an iphone5 because I wanted a bigger screen. About a month later I realized that I appreciated iOS more than a big screen.

I'm thankful to have both now!
