Another flop design from the Tim Cook team, the AirPods. Taking an OLD design from the Jobs era and slightly adapting it to make them wireless.

Also the reason for removing the jack is pure Apple marketing ********. There are lots of other device with even USB ports that are certified waterproof and resistant without having to compromise on functionality. Also since iPhone 7 is no thinner then the last generation, removing it to gain "thinness" wasn't even used as a reason.

Yep, it's called the iPhone 6!
I do get its a better phone and I do want it but I listen to audio every night to fall asleep and on holidays I have a battery pack plugged in as I drain my battery about 3 times a day using it round the pool etc. This will be a pain for me. They should have moved to the "wireless future" with wireless or MagSafe charging for the phone too and all would be perfect. Also the camera is plain ugly design. I don't get the obsession with thinness. Would prefer a really nice fresh looking phone slightly thicker but a design classic like the iPhone 4. That is a piece of art and the Samsung edges are amazing looking ( but id never switch)

I think the home button will be grand btw just slightly different.

Here's what I don't get. They do have a fetish with thinness and it's apparently one of the reasons why the iphone 6 and 6s were having ' touch disease ' problems based on that design. But with the SE or earlier designs, I never had that problem.

And lastly, can you imagine if they had kept the SAME classic design from the SE into a 5.5 size? I would have bought that in an instant. The right thickness and the weight itself would make texting so much easier. If the iphone 4 was 5.5, that would have been nice.

But no, they want to continue on with the thin fetish. It's going to bite them in the ass eventually.

Then you need to get over it and chose a different manufacturer. Apple has always been about building an ecosystem. If you want the broadest range of interoperability with open standards and the widest range of manufacturers, then get a different phone.
If the shoe fits...

Apple corporation are corporate pigs. Tim Cook is a liar. All Apple executives are liars.

I will be using less and less of Apples products. I've already switched my media consumption from Apple TV to the Xbox One. I've stopped buying movies and music from Apple and started giving my money to Amazon. I have blocked Apples update servers on my router and I'm reluctantly giving up the iPad Pro and Pencil.

I'm an artist and I absolutely love the iPad Pro and Pencil. However, the profiteering of Apple is causing me to pull away from their products and go back to "old school" painting.

Over time I will be out of the corporate shadow Apple casts. Screw Apple, they're all liars.

Expect sound compression coming from the AirPods with digital signals. I have a digital hearing aid and have had sound compression when listening to my music. It was so annoying that I had to get my audiologist to re-program it with a third mode without compression. After re-listening to the headphone, it was much better with richer sound.

AirPod is a BS money grab. Good luck trying not to look like a douche when wearing them out in public. Or in the ghetto asking for trouble.
Go on, read that, then complain about their price - I dare you.

This thread will get to 2'000 posts before the weekend easy. I'm out. Good luck arguing over something so minute you'll have forgotten it by the time your 7+ arrives anyway.

People are absolutely freaking out about this. They are screaming that they can't use their headphones. It comes with an adaptor. They will also be sold for $9, which is 3 times cheaper than a lightning cable but nobody bitches about having to buy them. It's crazy listening to the stupid.

Yep. I'm out. What do they say about arguing over the Internet again...?

Removal of the headphone jack is pure rubbish. It will definitely be a deal breaker for some, the only question is how many. If enough protest and refuse to buy, perhaps they'll put it back next year. Or not...

If you try reading the majority of the posts, people are freaking out about not being able to use their wired headphones WHILST charging the phone. Something a lot of people do and is a legitimate short-fall of this phone.

I hope you don't drive a car or ride a bike with those ancient "wheel" things on, soooo outdated. I hope you never use stone-age tools like hammers and saws. And shoes - I mean they've been around forever, you must be far too hipster to wear clothing right?
Don't be too surprised when Apple DOES change an automobile standard, like the steering wheel. Take a peek at their latest car designs and check out the steering wheel. I know you guys are joking about Apple changing the wheels on a car but they really are that arrogant to try.

Apple Corp are liars and Tim Cook is a liar. No headphone due to water resistance? LIARS!

"Essential" isn't the right word. (That's Macrumor's word, not Apple's.)

They *could have* kept it, but removing it allowed them to make better tradeoffs in the limited space.

They should have kept it. Apples excuse for removing are LIES! Anyone with half a brain can execute a simple Google search that will reveal a plethora of devices that do exactly what Apple claims can't be done, have a 3.5 mm port with a high degree of water resistance.

Waterproofing a 3.5mm port has already been done which makes Cook and Apple liars. However, they're not simply liars, they're powerful liars hellbent on profiteering.

How are they liars? If Apple is a bunch of corporate lying pigs then Moto must be the same, too?

Upset? I just don't care about the new phone and won't buy one. Seems like a downgrade from my current phone.

Except the ones you buy from Daiso for $1.50. :D
What is your current phone and where is it better if I might ask?

Yep. I want a much thicker iPhone so I can use the 6.5mm headphone plug that comes on my Sennheiser HD650's. Having to use a stupid 6.5mm to 3.5mm adapter is just a pain.

I didn't say "much thicker" but way to try to recast what was said to an extreme. Are you about 14 years old?

Per what Apple themselves said, they had to jettison this jack to make room to innovate a few other things into this phone. My point was they could have kept this jack and made the phone only a modest amount less thin to create abundant space for "additional innovation." That was another option that could have been chosen instead of kicking this jack out. Best I know, pretty much none of us have complained about "too thick" ever. Was iPhone 5 "too thick"? 4? Guess what happens if you take the 6 or 7 case and maybe split the difference between the thickness of this 7 and the 5? Lots of internal space is created for new innovations, more battery, etc WITHOUT having to eject this jack.

Else, what's next? If to be able to innovate, it now requires jettisoning internal stuff to accessories, what shall Apple jettison next so they can "further innovate"... and "thinner"? I'm sure whatever it is, guys- or boys- like you will be right back in the threads after it's announced rah-rahing that move too. Think different kid or eventually you'll be endorsing paying $1000 for an empty box, assembling all of what used to come inside from a bunch of accessories sold separately. It's just a headphone adapter. It's just a battery case. It's just a camera adapter. It's just a screen. It's just an aluminum box. It's just a piece of silicon.

And yes, using adapters IS a pain- a needless hassle that will persist for years and years now. Almost all of us will experience the joys of trying to make this work as well in "real world" uses soon. This change... this "innovation" is a catalyst of fragmentation from a thoroughly ubiquitous "just works" with everything & everywhere to needing to lug along a variety of adapters & splitters to cover all possible bases... or adopting an inferior quality Bluetooth that is also not even remotely as ubiquitous... or just doing without when you forgot to pack the adapter, lost or broke it and Bluetooth is not available.

But Apple is always right... and Apple consumers are always wrong unless what they want perfectly aligns with whatever Apple has decided to roll out. Guys or kids like you will rip individual consumer opinion when it does not comply with a giant corporation's spin. Thank you for doing your part. I'm sure the corporation appreciates your efforts.

It will be a "feature" on the iPhone 12. Much like the shiny black back from iPhone 3 has become a "premium" offering for the iPhone 7.

Cite? I don't need to CITE. It was evident right there on the keynote. You have to be so blind NOT to see the flaws. I'm a designer/artist and I'm trained to see flaws where I see them. The Lightning port is a design flaw when chargning is needed while listening to music or whatnot.

The only go around is use Lightning to charge it while using bluetooth to blast it on stereo speakers at home or in the car ( if they release a Lighting to USB-C adapter ).

Or using AirPods with 5 hour battery life while the phone charges with Lightning to the wall. For the AirPods to be effective, 10 hours would've been a good round number.

But you CANNOT use the lightning headphones when the phone battery is low if you need to listen to music or watch a video/movie. They should have made wireless charging for the phone FIRST before introducing AirPods or removing the 3.5 jack, NOT the other way around.

Que the battery pack with a passthrough Lightening port, or the dongle with a passthrough power and data port. Again, this is ‘mountain out of molehill’ stuff and hilarious to watch people fret about it. With the digital signal available through the Lightening port they are no longer limited to 2 channels, the end user - no matter how much of an audiophile, can deal with the digital signal anyway their sensitive ears require for a perfect experience and the 99% that don’t have perfect pitch or OCD will just continue listening to their music on the the $15 BT earbuds they got on the discount rack from their local Staples.

This is a ‘win win’ situation for customers no matter what kind of audio experience they need.

Something tells me there is more to it than what we are just seeing on the surface, and there is a FUTURE reason why they removed the jack that is something they cannot talk about obviously.
This is just a guess of course but their explanation as to why they had to remove it doesn't make too much sense. They could of just made the casing a tiny bit larger if it was because they needed more room .
So I think there is something up with this removal. We'll have to see of course.

Whilst at work. In the evening and at night. Existing high quality hands free kits in cars, especially when using GPS as well. When I'm on business I often listen to music or movie audio (whilst watching) when I'm in the hotel overnight whilst charging for the next day. People who play games a lot. There are lots of incidences where this scenario arises. Agreed, not for everyone, but for enough people that it is a bit of an over sight to omit it.
