The theoretical 4.7" model would be the same physical dimensions of the current iPhone 5s/5c, right? I really don't want my phone to be any wider than it currently is.

I like it it, and am ready for an upgrade come September.
It would be hard to make these manufacturers leak free, they have phones with cameras :)

I didn't think it could be in the same chassis at 4.7", it will need to go a bit wider unless Apple comes up with some amazing display technology.

apple...

KEEP THE PHONE AS THICK AS THE 4S AND PUT IN A BIGGER BATTERY.

THINNER ≠ BETTER

(yes i know these are renderings)

Agreed!

Yet another anorexic iPhone...yawn! Jony Ive is part of the problem, not part of the solution. I would much rather have someone who lives in the real world design these things. The only "good news" is a rumor that there may be a mutiny brewing at Apple as there appear to be a number of people who are not happy with him and that he is not universally well regarded at the mother ship.

Personally, I'd rather have an iPhone designed by this forum (and left to the engineers to implement). I'd also rather see some people who understand what a kludge iOS is put in charge of fixing it.

Actually yes....

Which one would you pick?

That doesn't make sense. Those two TVs aren't even the same technology. If you asked whether I prefer an LCD panel 5mm thick or 20mm thick I'd say I don't care. Even if I'm hanging it on a wall.

Not a valid comparison. For an appliance for which ergonomics is less of a concern, yeah I'd want it as thin and light as possible.

I would not want a hammer to be as thin and light as possible. If they could design a sheet of paper that could drive in nails, I'd still opt for a traditional hammer.

There's a point in which hand held things are thin and light enough that most people wouldn't really care if it got a little thinner or may even find it uncomfortable.

1. Why would anyone put their phone in their back pocket and sit on it?
2. The average back pocket size is probably a about twice the width as even the bigger smartphones. Believe it or not the iPhone 5S dimensions aren't the maximum allowed to fit into pockets.

1. I do it all the time.
2. More of a joke than anything (though I definitely do not want to see a monster phone).

Looks gorgeous. Praying and hoping it looks very close to this. But I hope the back isn't glass. I've seen too many shattered iphone 4 backs to know that is a bad idea. Thet should keep it aluminum but make it scratch resistance.

I'd rather they keep trying to make it thinner. I don't need my battery to last a week. I charge every day and I'm not on my phone 24/7. I'd rather not have a fat phone in my pocket.

I really like this mockup. Large, minimal bezel, rounded edges, and hopefully a metal backing and not glass.

You don't live in reality.

Apple is supposed to lead, not cave to the consumer cattle like every other tech manufacturer. Yes yes...you gotta do that to some extent (gold? really?) but I want a SMALLER iPhone. My eyes work, and If i wanted a phablet I'd just get a damn tablet. Technology is supposed to get smaller and smaller, it's why we're experimenting with wearables.
Also, quit bitching about battery life. I use my phone from when I wake to when I go to bed and plug it in with about 20 to 30 % left. Texting, Fbook, twitter, GPS, email, phone calls, Spotify during every commute over bluetooth and often music not cached offline, etc etc. Yes I've done all the "tweaks", so you could argue that you "shouldn't have to" do that out of the box, that's fair, but most people who aren't getting a full day are doing something a little unreasonable (however necessary) and should expect to have to compromise.

Why when it is unnecessary?

You don't live in reality.

You are plainly a marginal user who is in denial. Real users are always in search of a charge and frequently carry external power sources. The iPhone is so fragile that there is an enormous market for cases.

Denial is powerful. It is your reality.

I think I'm the only one who finds the iPhone5S already too thin. I really liked the feel of the 3GS. Nice curved back. Nice weight. Oh well.

Next time you are in an Apple Store, ask to handle one of their phones that have the card scanner in it. There is no extra battery in it, but it is much more ergonomic than the retail product (and not slippery either). Put some more battery in there and you'd have a useful improvement.

I still reckon it looks more like a Galaxy Note now...

All Apple needs to change is their logo on the back, and we have ourselves a Samsung phone.

If Apple wasn't selling this in their stores, i'd be mistaking an true Note any day.

After all, the big screen now is just the same as everyone else...

The only thing difference is the software...

when it comes to a handheld device, no.

it makes it too hard to hold.

my iPhone 5 feels better in the leather case than naked.

maybe my hands are too big..

You forgot to say In my opinion or for my taste ;)

So the ones that you don't have to carry with you (the ones that stay static somewhere on your walls or floors) is better to be as light and as thin as possible. But not the stuff that you carry on your hand or in your pocked? Sorry but to me doesn't make any sense!!

It's called personal preference! Surely I want the iPhone to be thinner (providing I still get the same or more battery life)! And something tells me I am not the only one. Thicker devices are not as attractive as thinner ones in my opinion. There is a reason why every year when technology makes it possible, companies design the devices thinner (tablets included)

Dude, never mind the technology used in them. That was not in the question. The question is, design wise..... which one would you rather have in your living room? Yeah, don't answer that, lol

I rather have scratched aluminum than broken glass

Well it still has glass in the front and that breaks too.

----------

I might like that too. I think the iPhone 4 had the most attractive back of all. It was clean, elegant and durable. (NB: I currently have an iPhone 5 but I always think when I see a naked black iPhone 4 that "damn, that looks pretty good even today")

Yes it does.

I don't understand why the artists of these renderings want to make the iPhone look like a Lumia. It's not good looking :S

I like the idea of the smooth, rounded edges. Would make feel a lot nicer in your hand (and against your face).

The squared off one looks great to me. I'd be thrilled if that were it. I'm guessing the rumor about it being more iPod-esque is what we'll actually see though.

When do we get to the point when all our stuff is 'thin' enough?

ever seen a scifi movie? when they're as thin as paper.

And once we get there, will Apple be out of ideas on how to innovate their designs?

if you think thinness is the only innovation apple produces, you haven't been paying attention.
