I've done a total of four installs of Leopard; two clean and two upgrades. I still can't get disk utility to repair permissions from Leopard. But I was able to boot from Tiger on a separate volume and repair permissions after copy the BaseSystem.pkg file from the Tiger /library/receipts to the Leopard /library/receipts. At first when I tried repairing permissions from Tiger it gave me an error message before coping the the file over.
TheZA,
I did exactly the same thing by trial and error - the Permissions on Macintosh HD became scrambled and it wouldn't let me boot into Leopard at all! I decided NOT to touch the Permissions at all after then!
However, things have started getting gradually worse - Leopard no longer mounts external hard drives or shared spaces either in sidebar or on the desktop correctly. Recently the remote control and keyboard have stopped controlling iTunes, VLC and Quicktime (although the remote will work Front Row just fine!).
I'm not entirely sure what these errors I'm getting are, but I'm inclined to blame them for my worsening state:

At the moment, I've removed all 'critical' data from the computer incase things get worse! I've been searching for a way of fixing the above, without luck as of yet.
And what is a pain is that Spotlight/ Finder won't search inside system folders! That hinders finding the offending files/ folders no end for a 'relative' OS X newbie such as myself.
