I've done a total of four installs of Leopard; two clean and two upgrades. I still can't get disk utility to repair permissions from Leopard. But I was able to boot from Tiger on a separate volume and repair permissions after copy the BaseSystem.pkg file from the Tiger /library/receipts to the Leopard /library/receipts. At first when I tried repairing permissions from Tiger it gave me an error message before coping the the file over.

TheZA,

I did exactly the same thing by trial and error - the Permissions on Macintosh HD became scrambled and it wouldn't let me boot into Leopard at all! I decided NOT to touch the Permissions at all after then!

However, things have started getting gradually worse - Leopard no longer mounts external hard drives or shared spaces either in sidebar or on the desktop correctly. Recently the remote control and keyboard have stopped controlling iTunes, VLC and Quicktime (although the remote will work Front Row just fine!).

I'm not entirely sure what these errors I'm getting are, but I'm inclined to blame them for my worsening state:

At the moment, I've removed all 'critical' data from the computer incase things get worse! I've been searching for a way of fixing the above, without luck as of yet.

And what is a pain is that Spotlight/ Finder won't search inside system folders! That hinders finding the offending files/ folders no end for a 'relative' OS X newbie such as myself.

10.5.1 does NOT fix

I can confirm on an iMac and MacBook Pro that 10.5.1 does not fix this issue. Both were upgrade installations to 10.5.

Well 10.5.1 for me:

Fixed the ACL problem ... yay.

Repaired some permissions this time ... yay.

More than tripled the number of SUID issues, I now have 9 of them. boo.

I got the 9 SUID issues - i noticed that one of them even realated to the finder

wtf?

I now have more problems than I had before the update (same 9 things as you guys, I'm sure...). I don't understand this. I realize there are always plenty of bugs in the beginning, but this is kinda ridiculous IMO...:apple:

I got permissions to work. Takes forever. It had nothing but a buncha things in it about my Epson Printer Drivers. Like 100 of them. Odd.

By "problems" do you mean "stuff listed during repair," or actual symptoms/failures?

My Leopard box is not handy, so I'll wait a few days and then try the update.

by problems, I mean my computer takes about twice the time to boot as before, and my 2.16 mbp is slower than before overall (opening apps, documents, etc.). AND these newly-found items in the disk utility. That's what I mean by problems. Besides that, it's running fine, just slower.

I just found this thread after updating to 10.5.1, using Retrospective to do a backup and receiving hundreds of errors, then using Disk Utility to repair permissions and getting the same SUID and ACL messages as others here.

Amazing. 10.5.1 didn't fix Time Machine, Spotlight, or this.

i'm guessing that ARD stuff is a bigger deal in Leopard given that it seems to be built into a few things like iChat and that whole share my desktop thing. repairing permissions took like 30 minutes for me on my G4 Powerbook. i just tried the whole deleting ARD thing (actually putting it in an archive), and it still seems dog slow, but i'm guessing i'd have to restart the system for that to really take any effect. besides that's not really a solution it's just dodging the problem, but if not seeing that warning in Disk Utility makes you feel better whatever.

actually i'm changing it back. the system seems to be fine it's not effecting anything. i'd rather not dig around in places that keeps asking me to validate. makes me nervous.

10.5.1 didn't fix it...

More permissions nonsense

Since I've started having all of these similar SUID permissions problems, I've noticed that I can't make the following changes on my 4 month old 2.4 ghz MBP:

1. Can't add to Address Book, i.e. new contacts or edit old ones
2. Any changes to photos made in IPhoto don't save
3. Can't change names of songs imported to Itunes.
4. Basically any new files that have come on to my computer, cannot be modified in ANY way.
5. Startup times are pretty bad..worse than before 10.5.1 update

Should I Time Machine back to before the 10.5.1 update or just wait for the next update??? This is kind of unsettling, no?

FYI, here's what I get when I use Disk Utility...(which btw takes about 10 minutes to do nothing and let me know my system is not in good health)

Yeah, so I'm confirming what I said before- my mbp is much slower now after the update. I mean, even simple processes are working at a much slower pace than when I had Tiger. It's only gotten worse since the 10.5.1 update... I've always supported Apple in their decicions, but I am still trying to figure this one out.

Some people found that Spotlight never stopped running, and some of the other processes are failing and restarting in the background.

I have problems with Leopard 10.5.1 too. My machine is slower, and I am getting there permission errors:

So I did a clean install. Address book works but I can't make changes to any photos in Iphoto, music in iTunes, no photos save in Photo Booth, etc. Machine is slowest Mac I've ever used. Took it in to a Genius Bar and they basically told me to do that reinstall. It's better but this Leopard is SPOTTY and in all of the people at the Mac Store I spoke to, was released too early. Another possible problem might have had to do with Disk Warrior. A friend who also used Disk Warrior has the same permissions issues as me. Here's the latest permissions repair results:

I'm going to suggest using this for searching for hard to find files instead of using Spotlight. Spotlight has been gimped in Leopard. This seems to find stuff relatively easy... It's sad we have to revert to other ways of finding things. Yes I know you can search for system files in Spotlight in Leopard, but things are much harder now.

It gets worse

I am having the same problems and more on my two laptops. I tried the fsck fix with no success. On one of my laptops, word has started acting very buggy. Sometimes I cannot control the cursor, can't type or delete. Several restarts will usually fix it but it is getting worse. On my other laptop, photoshop has now completely stopped working. It tries to open then crashes. My laptops are becoming useless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????
