I always thought this when “wireless” charging came out. It’s kind of a gimmick imo. Sometimes it’s convenient, but after trying a cheap one I found that I liked having the ability to still use my phone while it was charging. I hope Apple is looking at getting around this issue with a true wireless charging solution. My wallet would really be ready for something like that.

Considering that the only wireless technology that exists has, and still does, use the same basic principles that were around over a century ago then anything that is developed that can charge a device anywhere in a room is likely to be A) Expensive and B) The target of the same fear mongering that cell phones already face about the word 'radiation'. It also isn't likely to be cheap. You may be ready but I doubt your wallet and bank account would be.

Edit for a link:

It’s such a lazy design as well. It should have been aluminium with curved edges like the iPad Pro but with a soft material over the top.

This just looks unfinished. Apple products are supposed to be premium and yet this is the most boring design of any wireless charging mats I’ve seen.

I agree, the product as shown looks very ugly and unexciting. There are much nicer-looking wireless pads already available, some with multi-device support (not sure about AW).

Even if I had an AW, I wouldn’t want an ugly white pad as a permanent fixture on my desk or bedside that will only get grubby like their other white accessories.

Out of curiosity, I know "it's embarrassing" is a figure of speech, but why is it embarrassing? What would you have called it?
The obvious, and to my mind the most logical name for a wireless charging process has already been taken by a car company. Maybe you could use the guys first name, Nikola.

I don't know. That concept was already introduced by Porsche in 1903. Everything old is new again?

Have you noticed that none of the wireless chargers made by anyone have metal in their actual charging area? The stand itself can be metal but the charging area isn't. Metal would be a shield that would reduce the efficiency of the charging mat, or if the entire surface was metal probably prevent it from working at all. A side issue is it could be a shock hazard, but at around 20 or 30 watts at whatever low voltage they use for charging people probably wouldn't even feel it if they grounded themselves somehow and touched the aluminum. But mention the possibility and I bet a lot of lawsuits about severe shocks would be filed anyway.

Tesla was doing things before 1903 with wireless, in some circles he has replaced Marconi as the inventor of the radio. But Porsche would be a good name as well.

Can’t be overpriced when there is no price

Oh, so now you think it's priceless? :D

It's just a play on words, and not a slam. I haven't seen an actual price for it either. I do think it will be expensive, because despite not being a flashy device it has required a lot of development to make it work but most people don't see the difficulty involved so they don't care. I'm not sure this will be a popular selling item because its likely that current chargers will be much cheaper even if you have to buy 2 to charge your phone and whatever.

Cost usually wins.

Let’s face it the price won’t be less than £150 but for charging 3 devices it’s not a surprise

Let the snarky comments begin, just like original AirPods.

It will likely be a popular product if it works as designed.
Popular yes. Game-changing for the expected price? No.

I have a charging station with wireless charging on one side. It fits my needs exactly and I can charge both Apple and non-Apple products.

What you have and it fitting your needs is the definition of anecdotal. Of course you’ll justify your decision because you made it.

Wireless charging is just slow overall. Not thanks.
Why do you care how fast are your devices charging over night?

Wireless charging is useful for someone who has a desk job. Your phone sits on your desk and charges continually, so it never really runs down. For the rest of the population, it's less useful.
I don't think this is good for the battery though.

Agreed. But a lot of people will buy cheap no matter what. If they can buy a cheap wireless charger for $25 (exchange says that's a little under 20 pounds) then that will be how a lot of people will go, even if the thing quits working in a few months.

Other companies would have called it "wireless charger". By using idiotic names ("liquid retina display" anyone?) Apple is trying to fool consumers into thinking that their products are somehow special.

Well, I’m my opinion they are “special”, but that’s totally subjective. Apple must have “fooled” many customers since the 1980s.
