Just drop the line. It hasn’t worked it’s not going to work. I’ve said that before and I’ll say it again. They’re wasting their time. iPhone and iPhone pro. That’s all that’s needed. No air wind sea sky mini tall mini or whatever else.
All of those lines had their own share of fans. I loved the mini, I love my Air. Maybe those models aren't iPhone Pro-level successes, but who cares. How does it hurt you if apple has lines that don't really cater to you? Let other people be happy with the products that make them happy. I'll never cheer for a product that's dropped even if I don't see the use for it. Someone else probably does.

The weight doesn’t matter because its not that big of a difference. Its not like the MacBook Air. Back then laptops were huge and a light laptop made a difference. You could feel it and was easier to carry around. 177 vs 165 grams. Not much of a difference. Same thing with the iPad. Why is there an Air? The Air name is outdated because tech today is already lightweight and easy to carry around. Come up with something different Tim instead of reheating old nachos.

To me the weight matters, I will say that much, being a Mini user, who previously used SE1's forever.

Phone 13 Mini: 141 grams

iPhone SE1: 113 grams

Playing with the iPhone Air in the store my question is, whats the point of such a slim device with such a bug camera bump?
I think expensive one camera smartphones are aimed to medium to old age people with no interest in pictures/ video beyind basic function, so the 12MP old camera would do the trick, and the slimmer, the better

“The report claims that some Apple engineers want to release the redesigned version with a second camera in spring 2027, which is when Apple is expected to release the regular iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e, as part of a new split launch cycle.”

A very bad release timing, if true, as considering Apple will be also be releasing the rumoured “all glass” iPhone 20 (XX ?) in the autumn 2027, who will want to buy an updated Air 2 some six months before?
I think the huge, huge majority of people don't postpone buying a new phone in march because there may be a new phone in September. Most of my family has no idea new iPhones come every September. People on these rumor sites are not representative of the majority of the market.
Also, if my phone broke in march, I wouldn't not buy a new one for six months, I'd get the best available then.

It does seem like a truly "Air" phone would be flat back and magically slim, all the way.

Just rearranging the components to jam them all up top, really isn't particularly impressive.... at least not enough to pay more for less.

Customers seem to agree based upon the, apparently, disappointing to Apple sales numbers.

Steve Jobs knew. Tim’s motto is throw it all at the wall and see what sticks! Sure blew through money with Apple Car and Vision Pro. Could have made something insanely great but he hasn’t a clue.
… people running them have no conception of a good product versus a bad product. They have no feeling in their hearts usually about wanting to really help the customers …

iPhone Air is uniquely designed to house all of the internals in that 'camera bump'. It's actually where all the phone internals are.

I'd like to know what new tech batteries (Carbon, ZincAir, Solidstate) can offer in the case of physically smaller but capacity wise larger batteries - therefore allowing possibilities to move the internals in the main body and eliminating the bump.

Here is an idea...

do what you do with laptops.

The MacBook AIR is the base laptop...make the iPhone Air the baseline phone, dump the current 17-base series. Add a second camera, a second speaker, and a little more battery life...along with 2 sizes (you also do this with both laptop line-ups), 6.1 and 6.5". Pro series stays at current sizes (although I wish the 6.9" would shrink its too big)
What you described is the regular iPhone and the Plus. Just drop the Air name already. Its over. What this will do is just increase the price for the base model to 999 just because AIR. That is not good.

I never understood the idea of the air, a phone that is more expensive, potentially slower, has less features including the cameras then the base mode. Its only "advantage" is that its thinner.
And lighter, and much better materials (titanium/glass), with the same pro processor etc etc
Absolutely!
iPhone "air" isn't "air" at all, when considering weight and many previous iPhones, or even the current 16e.

iPhone 16e: 167 grams

iPhone Air: 165 grams

iPhone 12: 164 grams
iPhone 8/SE2: 148 grams
iPhone SE3: 144 grams
iPhone 13 Mini: 141 grams
iPhone 7: 138 grams
iPhone SE1: 113 grams
Why are you comparing phones of different screensizes. The whole point is the air has a big screen yet its so thin and light. A fair comparison would be with the iPhone 11 Pro Max at 226 grams which is significantly more. Anyone can make a tiny phone lightweight, its much more impressive to make a big phone light weight.

It is a huge difference and phone weights matter much more then a laptop which ultimately will be put on a desk for 99% of use. Phones go in pockets which then sag etc under the weight and bulk of most modern phones. I hated lugging around my iPhone 14 Pro Max. My air is so light sometimes I forget its in my pocket and do a panic check looking to see where I dropped it only to feel it in my pants.

Lmao… delayed indefinitely…. Nah JK… reports say it’s not selling well…. Nah JK….

It’s like theirs some conspiracy to hate on the air.

While I have used a pro max model phone since they have existed…. And if I can switch to the air I’m sure a large population of people who buy the pro because it says pro don’t actually need the pro.

That’s why I think the slightly thicker Samsung Edge was a better compromise between size, weight and tech features vs the iPhone Air. I’d like to see what Apple could do with a 5.8mm thick phone body in a Gen 2 Air. That said, have you ever held the Edge or Air? They’re genuinely more pleasant to hold vs the current lines of brick-like phones.

No its not. If you had a Pro and you went for the Air because of the weight then why not just buy the regular. 177 vs 165 grams. That only confirmed my suspicion even more. People don't buy the Pro because they needed it, they buy it because they don’t want the poor people iPhone even though its better than the Air.

They need to add a second (useful) camera and speaker and ditch the Pro SOC and stick in the SOC from the standard iPhone model. May help with battery life a little then?

The Air has too many disadvantages and is far too expensive, especially in Europe.

Add to that the problem that
everyone knows that an Air 2 would make the Air 1 look extremely old.

So my tip to Apple is:
You should have simply included the features and improvements of the Air 2 in the Air 1 and not been so greedy.

I'm glad that the iPhone Air is a flop. 👊

A slightly thicker iPhone Air with improved battery life, speaker and a good telephoto camera (as opposed to ultrawide) would be an interesting way to differentiate it from the base iPhone (with its normal and ultrawide) camera. At least this way, you actually increase choice instead of just releasing an inferior version of the base phone (which the Air is)

I genuinely think the first gen Air is a really good phone. As technology allows, it’ll only get better, and looking forward to seeing where Apple goes with it (so long as it isn’t scrapped).
I agree. What Apple should keep from the iPhone Air 1:

Pro processor.
Same memory as Pro model.
Thin and light.
6 ½ inch OLED 120 Hz display.

I’m all for a second camera as long as the above non-negotiables remain.

All of this is starting to sound like BS. One day it's cancelled, the next day they are adding cameras. Macrumors has been writing something conflicting on the iPhone Air almost DAILY.
