Not surprised with the delay. Expecting full availability of all the new features only by mid next year.

It will take them years and years to implement this. They were late years ago. Look at Samsung and their AI implementation, its much more fun and works today.

as long as it has the toggle to turn it off - I don't care

I would agree, if we would not know this:

Even if you are not visiting any Facebook page or affiliate site, their cookies will infest you: 100% just like Google does.
They don't ask for permission ! It might run in the background...

And this so called "Intelligence" is the hungriest data kraken ever.
You never know who sold and bought your data ... ( 👀 )

That's why I don't upgrade to 18. Will get back to a non-smartphone in 25 🧐

you dont need a smart phone to be tracked... you connect to a network for signal, they know where you are from your SIM ID.
drive? cameras on highways log rego.
pay with tap or card?
even VPNs are always secure...

face it, we have no privacy if someone wants to know a lot about you.

i've not seen one person using a Samsung phone show someone else "hey look at what my AI phone can do".

then again i dont think ive seen a flip phone in the wild either.
seeing them in store with a crease is still enough to put people off. and the price (although you wait a short while and get 30% off every year once initial demand is done).

Hope we'll see this soon in Europe as well.
I'm especially interested in the macOS implementation.

Apple Intelligence was never delayed. It was stated specifically at WWDC that it will not launch with iOS 18 and will be in beta in the fall. Having AI in 18.1 beta this early will hopefully allow the full launch by October.

"Apple Intelligence is free for users, and will be available in beta as part of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia this fall in U.S. English" [1]

Will not launch in 8.0 and ship with iPhone which his September, will be 8.1 "weeks later", and even then won't be complete with the Siri AI features.

It's also atypical for Apple to beta test 8.1 before even a 8.0 RC.

Do we still expect no ram increase for the 16 pro’s? If last years phone is the bare minimum for ai, why would they release a new phone in September that’s obsolete before it even comes out?
Because then when the 17 comes out they can use that as a selling point. The Apple way. It is sad when sub $300 android devices have the same/more ram as apple's flagship devices...

It's a bit of a moot point as a significant portion of current iPhone users will be unable to use the product anyway, and the onerous cost of an applicable device will keep most away for some time.
Then there will be those who have a capable device, but look for the switch to turn it off.

How does something that was announced to have a “This Fall” release date (in Beta no less) get “delayed” until October?

Any news on whether we can opt out—hopefully fully—from Apple “intelligence“? Otherwise, how’s the market for flip phones looking?

There are some other rumors you missed that will result in a more substantial upgrade:
  • WiFi 7 on all models
  • 2GB more RAM on the base and Plus for Apple Intelligence
  • 48-megapixel Ultra Wide lens on the Pro
  • 5x optical zoom for both Pro models
  • Larger camera sensor on the Pro Max only
  • Samsung's high performance M14 OLED panel on the Pro
  • Battery improvements (more efficient processor/screen, stacked battery)
  • Charging improvements (40W wired, 20W MagSafe)
Nobody is going to notice any of that.

- Wifi is already fast enough.
- I doubt the base and plus will get Apple Intelligence.
- Cameras have always been bad on smartphones.
- Samsung has AMOLED screens on their flagship phones that are still better than Apple's.
- More efficient processor, with those above features, eating away at any battery life gains.
- I doubt they use a stacked battery. Apple will try to make the phone thinner.
- 30W charging is already fast enough, and most charge overnight.

How about:

- AMOLED screens.
- Under display fingerprint sensor.
- Anti-glare display/nano-texture.
- An iPhone Ultra, similar to that of the Watch Ultra.
- A stylus holster and mini "Apple Pencil" integration - similar to the S24 Ultra.
- 200 MP Camera with 100x Zoom
- 120 refresh rate on all models.
- A phone thick enough to get rid of the ugly camera bump.

"A few things" being overall stability (both are good, but Windows is better),

It's really not.

multitasking (well the latest public beta of MacOS finally brings something resembling proper window management although still not on par with Windows and Linux)

You're confusing window management with multitasking. Multitasking is quite a bit better on macOS (gestures, spaces management, preserving window states, etc). And while native window managment is worse, I still haven't found a powerful app for on Windows like BetterTouchTool that allows for such customizability of window managements (and input options in general).

, proper font scaling that doesn't require changing systemwide display resolution (still to this day I can't get over this atrocious UX direction),

The way macOS handles resolution insures consistency, unlike Windows which still struggles with hidpi in certain apps. It has gotten better in time, but there are pros and cons to both approaches.

clipboard history, and pen support. I may have missed a few things. Oh and there's WSL.

You have also missed design consistency, memory management, 3rd party app quality, etc.

However, the biggest thing is how things are thought out. The way it works. 1000 of little details. It's subjective, but if you care about detail, Windows really can't compete.

Gotta have time to build all the new natural gas electricity plants needed to support wide-scale use of AI. Also, in Washington state, the utilities commission is going to need the "feather in" the rate increases we (consumers) will need to pay to support this... "Privitise costs, socialize expenses". Good related article:

No one is buying a phone becuase of AI, AI is cool and can be useful, but its not going to be a major factor for most.
If Apple had offered something really compelling for the iPhone 16 (based on latest rumors) over the 15 or even 14, I would agree with you that AI would not be the most important driver. But as of right now, especially if you take out AI features, I don't really see any major catalyst for me to upgrade to the 16 from my 14.

I do not see a RAM increase on iPhones for at least another 5-years. 8 GB will be the standard. Apple's AI is great, but it's only 1% of the whole OS.

As far as Ai, 12GB of RAM does seem to be the peak, however Samsung's Galaxy S21 will be oldest supported device for Galaxy AI. The S21 and S21+ both have 8GB of RAM with the S21 Ultra having 12GB/16GB being the exception.

Less than 1% of smartphones ship with above 12GB.
