India has WAY WORSE Quality control than China 😢 whelp… I guess the 17 Ultra will be my last iPhone ever.
I'm not sure that a country has quality control. Foxconn India has different processes and procedures than Foxconn plants in China ..... ? source or hunch ?

BTW - just because you use capital letters doesn't make something true

Supply chain ops is something which Tim Cook is known for... so really this should be his moment.
I agree. Tim Cook is one of the best in the world at supply chain management, but awful when it comes to innovation. I wish Cook had just stayed in charge of the supply chain and had never been made CEO. Steve Jobs should have made Scott Forstall CEO instead of Cook.

I’ve said it before:
  • U.S. goods imports from India totaled $87.4 billion in 2024
  • I’d estimate U.S. net sales of iPhones as a similar figure at $72 billion (iPhone net sales of $200 billion worldwide, and a 36% share of Apple’s overall revenue for the U.S., both according to Apple’s latest annual report)
👉 Wouldn’t be shocked if sourcing all U.S. iPhones from India significantly increased the trade deficit with India.

“Let me tell you, folks, I've been working hard —very hard— on a deal with India. We’ve been negotiating, trying to make it fair for America— but despite all that the trade deficit with India has increased and it's a real problem. I've just received the newest numbers. And we’re talking about big numbers, bigger than ever before. India’s taking advantage of U.S., and it’s not right. We’ve got to stand up for America, and we’ll make sure we get a much better deal, believe me!”

Apple seems to be betting on the fact that the current tariffs BS isn't going anywhere in the short term and are planning accordingly
Apple had been moving this direction for a while because of the likely possibility that China will attack Taiwan. Microsoft and Google already moved out, mostly to Vietnam.

IMHO the crazy tariffs are a short term bargaining tool. That said some tariffs will remain for various reasons and hopefully overall it will even things out more.

Or they could just build them here... America was the world's factory, until the oligarchs decided they could profit more off of Chinese production with a manipulated currency and forced below market labor.

They used to say "we can only build in China"... but now they build in China and Brazil... so it's basically they just don't want to pay American workers.

So at the end of the day, manufacturing isn’t coming back to the US, meaning the tariffs really didn’t accomplish Trump’s goal. Got it.
The was never the main goal of the tariff hammer. After WW2 nations that were devastated from the war (Germany, Japan, China etc) received very favorable tariffs. They paid little or nothing when selling their goods to the US but the US paid much higher tariffs when selling goods to them.

This was never readdressed and should have been 20 years ago. The primary goal of all of this is fare trade. Of course one way to not pay tariffs is to make products in the US. Some of this will happen. The example that has been used is Honda building a new mega plant in the US.

have someone suggest you’re a criminal in America and see how fast you’re in Central America.
Challenge accepted! I’m not in the US illegally, never had my wife file a protective order on me, and have committed no crimes.

Now you go to China and do what I suggested. We’ll see which one of us has a better time. :)

If the quality of iPhones made in India are as good as those manufactured in China, I have no problem. However, just to be on the safe side this year, maybe I should get a Chinese-made 17 Pro. There could be quality control issues for the first year or two as Apple increases production to a level not seen before in India.
Makes sense. Aren't SE's assembled in Indian? I think so. Once wrinkles are worked out; supply chain...India's regs...etc. I see no issue with India sourcing my next iPhone.

One of these superpowers has a truly dreadful record on human rights. The other's isn't great, but it's getting worse and still isn't anywhere near as bad. Neither though are anything to write home about.

Seriously kids, we're arguing about this?!
