This nonsense wouldn't be necessary if the EU and the US would stop turning the app store into a public utility.

If that was the main reason, Apple would've been raising U.S. iPhone prices across the board yet Pro and Pro Max models have been the same price since they launched in 2019 (they're actually $50 cheaper for 256GB and 512GB versions), the 2022 SE is only $30 higher priced than the 2016 model. Also, price increases overseas have largely been due to currency exchange rates not Apple having to find additional or expanded ways to make money.

Apple is simply following what others like Disney+ and Netflix are doing.

Apple’s leadership has clearly nosedived in the last 5-6 years. Once thought to be ridiculous ideas like these are becoming the norm. Apple is set to alienate a lot of original users that bought into the version of Apple that genuinely thought differently. This version of Apple is looking more and more like every other sleazy tech company, and just like the rest, they too now have garbage software quality and a lousy overall experience. It’s a sad state of affairs, and it will no doubt remain that way without product people at the top.

Tim Cook is a lost man without a compass.
How is Apple sleazy?
My iPad, iPhone & Mac, plus watch work seamlessly. Oh yeah, as does the HomePod & beats. So what software experience are you actually talking about?
Richest Company on the planet. How is the compass lost?

Anyone can make a half baked statement, but it takes more than that to actually have substance. Big fail on your comment.

And by doing so in this inflationary market, they’re actually being responsible.

Please don't change the current tier offering. If adverts were added to a free tier option, that would be a good entry into the Apple TV+ system. But I do not want to be surprised with the current ad free version switching to the Hulu model of 'minimal' ads unless you bump up a tier.

We will get Ads on top of the subscription price. Or the subscription price will rise to accommodate a free tier.

What needs to happen is regulation tying multiple distinct products the way Apple is doing. Most people buy a general purpose smartphone such as the iPhone. Then they tie the Apple TV+ service giving it special OS features that no other competitor in that space can access … this has been the basis of their entire goto market of all their digital services.

In order for ads to be effective, they need to be targeted ads. That's generally what ad buyers prefer nowadays (less time and money spent showing ads to people not interested in a product) vs non-personalized ads. In order for ad buyers to target their ads effectively, Apple would have to share with them some specific user data.

That runs counter to Apple's privacy stance. Is this the route Apple's going to go down?

Except that this is not anything new. Steve Jobs pushed for an ad-supported version of macOS that would literally play ads during startup.
Jobs envisioned the ad-supported version of Mac OS 9 displaying a 60-second commercial from a "premium" company at startup, with the ads occasionally being automatically swapped out for new ones over the Internet. He also visualized the use of contextually relevant ads, such as an Epson printer ink ad being displayed when the user's printer was reporting that it was low on ink.

Then they even filed a patent to do it in OS X.

iAd came out in 2010…under Steve Jobs.

As for software quality, it wasn’t all roses and rainbows. It has actually improved dramatically. Let’s not forget that the MobileMe disaster happened under Steve’s watch.

I’ve had a free 3 month promo going for the last 2 1/2 months and I still haven’t watched anything on there.

I know they have a couple decent shows, but there isn’t enough content for me to pay for an ad free version. And I wouldn’t sit through their ads if they did offer a free version.
They have a few great shows that we have thoroughly enjoyed watching. Number of shows is definitely nowhere near Netflix/HBO/Disney's, but it's growing slowly.
