I hate ads. I have sub for all apple services. They try to force ads on news. I use a blocker at router level. The logs show amazing quantity of blocked ad and track requests back to Apple. If they add ads to TV and don’t provide tier to pay out then I’m out for all apple services bar iCloud storage.

It's not really worth the $4.99 a month now. Apple don't do it..
I suspended my sub a few days ago after realising I had not watched anything in there for a few months. There just isn’t enough content, and what there is is too upper class northern Californian/public television to be of interest.

This problem is a major reason I haven’t gone Apple One.

Adding advertising would be a way for me to more permanently avoid the money grubbing for a largely empty product. We pay a subscription so we should not have to put up with ads.

If I had to choose only one streaming tv service, it would be Apple TV+. There’s not that much content, but most is great quality: enough that I can’t keep up with it all. But I won’t pay for a streaming service that is interrupted by ads. Not really interested in US sports, though, so I’ll forgive that. And if I see ads for third party products, I’ll unsubscribe.

I once brought up how Apple seems to be becoming more and more like the Big Brother they mocked in their 1984 TV commercial. Even avid Apple fans (not just, "I get a new iPhone every 5 years", but those who have $13K+ of mac gear) have said they've always been like that. They just did a better job of hiding it back then was all.

There are also many more opportunities and rea$son$ for them to be "Big Brother" today.

Fair enough, but we get to mock Apple about it in the same way we mock Samsung, Microsoft, and Google whenever they do things that Apple does.

Absolutely.

Problem is, ATV+ is already $5 a month. There doesn't seem to be much place to go besides free. I guess they could entertain $1 to $3 a month, but don't know if that'll have any meaningful impact to them.

$4.99 is the current price but Apple may decide to increase the ad-free price to something like $6.99 or $7.99 and make ad-supported something like $3.99 or $4.99.

Some people will only do ad-free (including yours truly), so they would lose us as consumers if options for ad-free were to go away.

I highly doubt ad-free will be going away.

I don't think the issue is the $5 a month, it's the universal issue of 'watch entire season in 1 day, now wait 1 year for the next season'. Would you rather have too many shows, not enough time, or too much time and not enough shows? :D

Some ATV stuff I've seen and liked but are not usually mentioned in threads like this:
- Slow Horses (Gary Oldman)
- Wecrashed (not as pretentious as I thought it'd be)
- The Big Conn (is fine as a doc, but a reenactment would have been several seasons and way better)
- Finch (not as stereotypical as I thought it'd be)

Apple’s leadership has clearly nosedived in the last 5-6 years. Once thought to be ridiculous ideas like these are becoming the norm. Apple is set to alienate a lot of original users that bought into the version of Apple that genuinely thought differently. This version of Apple is looking more and more like every other sleazy tech company, and just like the rest, they too now have garbage software quality and a lousy overall experience. It’s a sad state of affairs, and it will no doubt remain that way without product people at the top.

Tim Cook is a lost man without a compass.

Agree. I'm one of those Apple users. Tim Cook has poisoned Apple. Apple will be better off without him. And no, making money for institutional investors is not the only metric.

This is funny. In the Apple TV thread people were insistent that it the Apple TV 4k is worth five times the price of any other device because of the glorious ad free experience.

They should just cancel TV+ aswell, does anybody care?

You just made that up.

The Apple TV experience is that you can find any Movie or TV show with a single search. It also brings all of the apps together seamlessly in the "iOS" style that Apple people like. It has Apple Fitness+ that integrates perfectly with the Apple Watch. Plus I already have ads on my local catch up TV app selection, and maybe we'll have it with Netflix going forward.

Personally, I like TV+ and all the things that come with it, and I’m sure there are millions like me. Just because you don’t care about it doesn’t mean anything at all.

Show me a single post where someone said they thought Apple TV 4K is worth 5 times the price because of the ad free experience. …..didn’t think so.

I bought a Roku Stream Stick for $30 plugged into an HDMI port and it does everything my AppleTV does - Apple needs to understand their competition better.

to which somebody responded with ..

LOL

It's terrible slow and has ads EVERYWHERE. You can enjoy that and I'll enjoy my ad-free smooth experience.

LOL indeed, that didn't age well. :)

😂. At least you came up with it. Well done.

And I’m not sure Roku does EVERYTHING as well as Apple TV, so the argument is flawed, but maybe for everything for steaming. Games? Fitness?
But I did ask you to come up with an example, so kudos to you 😂😂

I can’t agree with the ads though. Only ads are from other services, plus a preview and a skip button for Apple shows. That’s hardly ads.

Except that this is not anything new. Steve Jobs pushed for an ad-supported version of macOS that would literally play ads during startup.

Then they even filed a patent to do it in OS X.

iAd came out in 2010…under Steve Jobs.

As for software quality, it wasn’t all roses and rainbows. It has actually improved dramatically. Let’s not forget that the MobileMe disaster happened under Steve’s watch.
Steve also introduced OS X which was beautiful to look at, but worked worse than 💩.

But apparently Tim Cook is the worst person to be in charge of Apple according to some people here. They have no idea. I’m sure Tim isn’t trying to save Apple with some pointless forum post. (Like mine) 🫣

Hey…if they want to…go for it

I simply won’t watch any of it

That said, I’ve never paid a nickel for any of it as there always seems to be a free trial with one device purchase or another

I’ll live without … not watching ADs and not paying to remove them
