I was in the cellular business 2+ decades... many years helping to launch the iPhone for one of the big 3 carriers. I recall RIM/BlackBerry doing something similar at some point (I think it was the device numbering convention) and other OEMs such as Samsung as well (I think they skipped the Note 6 for some reason). At the end of the day it doesn't really matter as it is all marketing. People go on said website (Apple or carrier) and click buy on the landing page. As funny and crazy as it is to people like us, who visit this site and keep up with technology news/rumors, it's just marketing for the masses.

On the launch change, that is interesting. Apple is predictable in terms of the time table each year. It will be interesting to see this transition from a Sept launch or simply launching higher end devices in that time period. Only time will tell if this is actually true.

Why is the iPhone Air still in existence in this imaginary future? I thought Apple had learned their lesson.
If they're smart they'll give it a second camera, stereo speakers and lower the price to entry level or just slightly above the regular 17.... Sure it will sell like gangbusters then.

Releasing the standard models early in the calendar year runs some risk of appearing old and stale in the end-of-year holiday season, as competitors have a large window for introducing shiny new things. Granted, standard model buyers may not be so in tune with what's the latest hotness, but still.

Such a blunder.

Come on Apple, together the number to something that people can relate to.

Nobody cares if it’s the 20th anniversary year or not.

You think Ford (founded in 1903) should have called its 1923 MY cars 1920 Models?

Call it the iPhone 27 and just get it over with.

The silly lack of naming consistency in hardware was brought into stark contrast when the xOS’s were harmonized to model year.

Your notes and documentation could be so much more compact and easier to read if you would name h/w by model year too.

Reading this it sounds like the specialty phones (Air, Flip, and Fold) might get every other year releases? If so that makes a lot of sense to me. Then the regular phones (Pro, Pro Max, non pro and E) can get yearly releases albeit two in the fall and two in the spring.

Do you already have any information about whether there will be an iPhone 29 or whether Apple will skip it as well? Thank you for your support.

That's not what it sounds like at all.... They're just going to split the releases....base low end phones in the first half of the year, and specialty pro phones in the second half of the year as usual.... Still yearly. The only thing being skipped is the low end phones being released at their regular interval in September 2026.... They'll be pushed back to first half 2027 to facilitate the schedule change.

I'm skipping the 17 and 18 series for this. My phone should be paid off by then so I'll have a good trade-in credit for the 20 (assuming it's not 34 trillion dollars).

Nine is not embraced in Japan because its pronunciation is "ku" which is close to the another word meaning suffering or pain.

But 9 is considered a lucky number in China.

I relate 9 to one of my favourite movies… maybe Tim got turned down for a role in it!
