Why not iPhone 27 or something?

Because the hardware has a far longer life than the software, so you'd end up saying you've a 27 running 29.

Better to have the numbering system for the OS, which changes yearly, and either no numbering system at all for the hardware, or, like with Macs and iPad Airs and Pros, refer to the chip number. (e.g. 26 on an M5)

Not to start trouble or nothing, but does anyone else get tired of following rumors for devices years down the road? I know i do! Don't get me wrong i love apple and technology and the potential for things to grow and evolve, but it also takes away from the present moment i feel. Im hyped for the Iphone fold but we dont even know for sure we are getting it next year. We wont know until Septemeber. Im not worried about the iphone 20 or what ever...i just want to know if there will be a fold, when and how much.... When i work for apple then i'll worry about devices 2-3 years down the line!

Apple should just make one special anniversary phone and simply call it “The iPhone”.

Do it like Hollywood names their sequels.

Final Destination
Final Destination 2
Final Destination 3

and then…

The Final Destination

You're on the wrong website then buddy. macRUMORS may not be for you

but it would make sense to have iPhone 28 running iOS 27, both of which come out at roughly the same time?

Hmm, good point!

I really wouldn't know what Apple will do. In fact, it sometimes looks like they don't know. And with Mr. Cue response to the question why they renamed Apple TV+ to Apple TV...they simply shouldn't have build the spaceship, as it seems they have all employees running around in circles.

If this naming is what Apple currently thinks drive iPhone sales, they are certifiable nuts.

Apple should be spending its time and money fixing broken code.

Skips iPhone 9, skips iOS 19, skips iPhone 19.

What has Apple got against the number 9 😂
It gives people the impression that they are about to purchase a gen of tech that is very soon obsolete by something new ushered in, and they would rather wait for the new shiny stuff (10, 20 etc).

Second time Apple would skip #9 iPhone 8 -> iPhone 10 and now iPhone 18 -> iPhone 20. Same with Microsoft Windows 8 -> Windows 10.

You do know Apple has different departments right? The programmers who are working on codes, bug fixes, etc. are not sitting around working on marketing and naming conventions 🤦‍♂️

Just call it using the SoC name like Mac & iPad
iPhone e (A19)
iPhone (A20)
iPhone Air (A20 Pro)
iPhone Pro (A20 Pro)
iPhone Pro Max (A20 Pro)

I've wanted to see something like this for a while (like iPads and Macs), but figured they love the numbering so much, especially with the product they really push sales with year over year.

We seemed to get close with the SE and Air, but really odd how SE went back to being a numbered phone.

Funny how Microsoft moved away from naming products after the year it was released in the 90s...
  • Windows 95
  • Office 97
  • Office 98
  • Windows 98
  • Windows 2000
.. and then stopped that over 20 years ago and moved on to Windows XP, 7, 8, 9 (!), 10, 11
For whatever reason they also disliked "9" 😁

Now Apple is naming their products the year after it's released.... similar to FiFA and other games etc.

Seems the biggest marketing nightmare of IT... naming the product after multiple versions of the same product, and not being allowed to use "9" 😜

Based on what we’re hearing about sales, unless there is a change of strategy in regard to the iPhone Air, maybe in pricing and features shifting to the lower end, I am not convinced there will be another generation of the device.

I think it’s going to shift to SE, Standard, Pro, Pro Max, and foldable. The end.

It’s interesting, because the Air suffers the same issue the iPhone Mini did -both were designed and priced at a premium, but might have had better success being targeted as a lesser expensive option. People don’t want to pay more for less, and the smaller screen or thinner device isn’t enough to offset that.

It’s kind of like the iPad mini, which is overpriced, but gets away with it because it serves a niche - and there are no other options if you want a small iPad. Here, there ARE other options, that might not be the same, but are “close enough” that folks aren’t going to go for it.

Not true, as both mini 12 and 13 were costing less than their bigger 12 and 13 siblings, while offering (drumbeat!) exactly the same set of features in the smaller body. The only real difference was the battery size. Just imagine - the same set of cameras and stereo speakers, while being both lighter and smaller.

Despite Apple's naming convention, life goes on. Nothing to get upset about and go non-linear. Planet Earth will continue to rotate into the Sun's rays tomorrow morning.

This not just Apple thing. For example IWC updated their long running Mark line from XVIII to XX, skipping XIX. I guess 19, kinda like 9 seems like a weak number. Like twilight. But 20, now thats hype, full of vitality, a new beginning.

Having the current iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max design for only 2 years feels like a very short amount of time for Apple right?

I feel like we're missing something with this rumor. (which is part of the fun!)

My perfect world companies come out with products when they are ready rather than this endless cycle every year.
Products that are produced at this massive scale are never going to be 100% perfectly ready. There's always going to be a few bugs or hiccups once they start getting in to the hands of millions of people. If companies are waiting around to make the perfectly ready product, they'll never release it.
