I think what you have been missing is many of these other countries are not competing on equal terms. They have high tariffs on US products. Trump is trying level the playing field.
Sorry, but that’s BS, and it has been penned out many times over the last months. I’m Not going to repeat those arguments. But I would like to ask: How does lowering the tariffs of US goods going into Vietnam create lower prices on Vietnamese products in US retail stores? If you can solve that riddle, then you’re allowed to defend Trump’s trade war.

If these white collar jobs are all you think they are, then why are all these people who took out student loans and went to college to get a white collar job, asking people with blue collar jobs to pay their loans? Shouldn't they be making so much money they can pay their own?
I had a blue collar plumber quote me on installing a hot water tank, and he was basically asking for $700 per hour. Are there a lot of white collar jobs paying that? What kind of job can you get with a 4 year degree in humanities? Seems a lot of these people are making TikTok videos crying about not being able to get a job and pay their bills.
Sorry, I don’t have time to debate this particular piece of nonsense, so I’ll have to just let it sit.

The intent is not to lower the price of Vietnamese products in the US. The intent is to have more US products sold in Vietnam, and make US made products competitive with those made in Vietnam in the US.

Which will raise the price for the American consumer. Because you did not make US manufacturing more competitive. You just raised prices. Which also means that no, Vietnam will not start purchasing American made products. Neither will EU, we will keep buying them from Vietnam, because why wouldn’t we? The expensive American made products that are held artificially alive in the home market through high import taxes are not competitive anywhere else. So you are in fact not helping the trade deficit, that is said to be the reason behind this trade war. All you are doing is making Americans poor.

You may be successful in making all products expensive enough for Americans that they start buying American, but no one else will.

Why when I travel to Europe do I find prices higher than in the USA.

Why when I travel to Europe do I find prices higher than in the USA.
I don’t follow why that is relevant to the discussion, but typically due to VAT, sometimes due to higher overhead costs (store employees in the country I live in can actually buy a house). Anyway, please elaborate on your point here, it’s not very clear to me what the relevance is?

You said that any tariffs that Trump is putting on, are making Americans poor, and that in the EU, you will continue to buy from Vietnam, I assume because you think the prices are low.

Yet when I travel to Europe, and I have a lot over the past 30 years, the prices are high. I have a friend in Germany, and every time I would come over, he would have me pick up several pair of Levi jeans for him, as they are way more expensive in Europe. So in Europe, you must already be doing what you are saying is wrong for the USA to do.

The people I worked with in our company in France, who had the same position basically I had, lived in very small apartments, had one car, usually kind of old and crappy. On the other hand I have a 4 bedroom home with 4 bathrooms, 2 car garage. I could fit their entire apartment in my living room. Somehow I had a lot more buying power. But then again I didn't have the entire month of August off!

You are making false assumptions. The higher prices in EU is caused by lots of things other than tariffs, and I already explained some of them. I looked it up - the tariffs on clothing made in Vietnam going into EU is a big fat zero.

Please give me an example of a MADE IN USA product that you have seen in a store in EU, that was more expensive. You know why you can’t? None of the many “American” products (apart from maybe peanuts) are actually made in America. This is what Trump considers a problem. Okay - My question to you is: How is higher tariffs on imports from Vietnam to US going to make Europeans buy stuff from US instead of Vietnam? Why would Levi’s not just make a factory in US to sell to Americans, but keep their factory in Vietnam to sell to Europeans?

Anecdotal, and apples to oranges. Where I live houses and cars are expensive, but medical aid is free and we literally get paid to go to university. And it is completely irrelevant to the discussion.

But even if I decided to play along and give you the benefit of the doubt, you just argued that USA should NOT do what Trump is doing right now, since it is going fantastic already and adding tariffs like you think EU is doing (but isn’t*) will make you as poor as Europeans…

*Yes there are still some tariffs. But EU is literally founded on the concept of free trade, with the specific purpose of lowering barriers of trade including tariffs. And internally in EU there is no tariff on any product from any country. This is the foundation of the growth of Europe post WW2.

Well I guess you informed me. I had no idea that in the EU there are zero tariffs on any products. I guess I have been lied to by the media, ChatGPT and Google.

As far as the Levi Jeans, I can buy a pair of Levi 505 for $31.99 today. What is your local price?

I always hear the French and Germans I work with tell me, "yes you make more, and have more disposable income, but we have free healthcare". Is it really free? My understanding is that in France, you are reimbursed for 70% for most doctor visits, and 80% for most hospitals. 65% for essential medications. My employer sponsored health care, that I did have to pay into each month covered a lot more than that. In most cases 100%. Many people in the USA (26%) are on Medicaid which covers pretty much everything 100% at no charge.

Why do so many foreigners come to the US to attend universities?

Current EU Tariff on Large-Capacity U.S. Motorcycle

  • Since April 1, 2025, the European Commission has imposed an additional 50% customs duty on U.S.-origin motorcycles with engine capacities over 500 cc. This brings the total tariff to approximately 56%, including the standard import duty.
  • To illustrate:
    • A Harley-Davidson motorcycle priced at €20,000 could see its import cost rise to around €30,000 under this tariff regime (before adding VAT and local fees).
