I am no photo expert but in my opinion going from Sony to Samsung cameras is a side-grade. I have no problem with the pics that Samsung flagship phones take.

Once again Mac Rumors contributors show up to post their hate for America, or like a comment that does.

Disgusting.

*edit: I don't mean the people that write the articles. I mean those that comment and like comments.
America is literally doing it to itself. It’s like a bully who attacks his friends and then acts hurt that people don’t like him. Clownish.

How about an Apple designed image sensor with 20 stops of dynamic range and having greatly reduced noise? And fabricated in one of Samsung’s fabs?
And while they're add it they could also start to manufacture warp drives and cold fusion reactors.
In other words, if they could, they would have done it already.

Do you really believe Apple wouldn’t use that in an iPhone for a decade or two?
Of course they would, if they could defy the laws of physics and physical limitation that we have today. How exactly does one scale such a stacked sensor from full frame format to the size of something that fits in a phone? Of course we'll get there one day, just like we got from 90nm to 3nm... it just took 20 years. And after those 20 years, the FF sensors will be far ahead compared to something in a phone.

Apple looks at technology all over the world if this makes sense for their product road map then it's a good move. If they're just doing it to appease the GOP god then it's a mistake.

Something has to give. To lower its costs, Apple, like many other tech giants have done, will start to globalize its developers. Trump only seems to care about low money manufacturing jobs.

Apple has filed a patent of their own very novel design with the claims that I mentioned. Next step is design, selecting and working with a fab (possibly Samsung), evaluating first silicon, and then using the sensor in future iPhones.

No doubt in the past you were similarly saying the above (re making warp drives and cold fusion reactors) regarding Apple dropping Intel CPUs and develop their own A/M series processors. Ditto with Apple developing their own baseband modem chips and dropping Qualcomm. Yet here we are today.

We already know what happens with US manufacturing. Fender taught us. The price triples.

A guitar is ultimately some wood, steel, wire/magnets and a little plastic. For something as complex as an iPhone with the precision tolerance Apple requires, the price could quadruple.
Tesla is the most made in USA car. A new Model 3 cost less than most Toyota's.

Apple and many others often file patents. Many to have have it and prevent others to make progress in a specific direction. There are patents showing the "holy grail" for specific technology fields and nothing else.

Since you didn't answer the question of how to scale a FF sensor to something much smaller, I take it you have never designed any type of chip. Think a little about how stacked chips affect dynamic range and how noise is reduced.

Care to point me to where I said similar things about Apple dropping Intel chips and develop their own processors (in the Intel era, not 68k or PPC)? Or about the modem? Because I never said such things. On the contrary, I was using some of the technology from Apple long before it hit the market as they often supply others with pre-release technology if it fits their narrative (head over to the Red forum to read about the x86-> ARM switch. Red is part of Nikon today). But since you avoid posting details about technology, put words in people's mouth and show clear lack of understanding of the technology, I'm just going to assume you're an Apple fanboy and keyboard warrior doing an excellent job.

Oh, and I say that as an Apple user since the 80s. But I've developed enough hard- and software to not see everything through rose-colored glasses, but rather the way things are. As Walter Lewin always said in his lectures "Physics works".

Ignoring that these are totally different comparisons (because they're very different products made by very different companies), a base hybrid Camry is like 30K, a base model 3 is 40K. Even the BZ4X (terrible name) is only like 38K.

I will miss Sony, samsung phone cameras never stack up that well to the iPhone in image shoot outs year by year.

I prefer a killer lower res camera, than a medicore 200 megapixel camera. Either way i will be getting a 17 pro max with maybe the last sony image sensor :(.

Nope... Hardware electrical engineer and systems engineer, working on many projects. Though not my focus, I have also designed chips in the past for a small full-custom chip startup that developed signal processing communications related chips (digital up and down converter chips for SDRs, FIR filter chips, QAM modulators/demodulators, etc) that was eventually acquired by a very large US semiconductor company.

As Dr. Richard Feynman would say: "The first principle is that you must not fool yourself and you are the easiest person to fool."

If the US Made quality is on par with China, then I think most would prefer a domestic product.
I'm excited to see how the US/Apple made iPhone will fare against the Foxconn made iPhone as well.
The quality should be about the same because Apple will bring the Chinese factory workers to the US.;) I'm joking. Hopefully.😶‍🌫️ Apple shouldn't take my comment seriously and actually bring Chinese workers to build the iPhone in Murica.😓

If we a see a price increase from this, i’m out. Competition is too fierce to be overpaying because its components are made in a country nothing to do with me.
Competition is why you won’t see major price increases on anything unless everyone does it.

The only US-made Apple product I've ever got was the 2013 MP trash can. 6 months in there were power issues. It took them a week to diagnose it was the riser cable and PS. Then they also changed the board. They scratched the case so I had to wait another week.

Outside of my first 06 MBP, it was the only Apple product that needed servicing and I've owned dozens over the decade.

Both manufacturing in India and the US will see a drop in quality. China has been doing all this a lot longer. They are better at it, with whatever comes with that "prize."

Nice try but fender discontinued the $1200 USA SKU during the pandemic. So my chart is accurate.
My sarcasm was perhaps not obvious enough. If you look at the original reply I put the minus symbol in front of the $1200 in bold.
I wasn't having a go at you.

Will be interesting to see how the image quality changes with the switch in sensor. Expecting them to be good! The upcoming iPhone Fold might be the first one to use it.
