I'll believe this when I see pigs flying over a blue moon. Thankfully in EU we will be able to choose our default digital assistant in iOS/MacOS soon. I've mapped Google Gemini to my action button in the meantime and disabled Siri. Siri is utterly useless.

Apple is not good at software. They should opt to only provide top qauilty tools for third party developers and open their systems for them to develop state of the art (system)software for at least macOS. Apple should stick to hardware only, maybe the most basic operating system. All Apple can and will do is bling-bling. So AI will onyl be bling-bling demo quality to show off. And then 'abandon and forget', only minor polish each year to keep them suckers shelling out.

There you have it. Apple officially announces the new Siri with the bragadocious tag line "prolly on par with current LLM's, who knows?"

This landmark announcement comes directly from top Apple shadow executive Mark Gurman.

I think Apple should consider renaming Siri. And, given AI’s tendency to regurgitate whatever it’s heard, no matter how senseless and cataclysmically inaccurate, I think the new name should be Mark Gurman.

This is basically what I expect from Apple. They have all the resources in the world and every ability to unseat Chat GPT and make AI chatbot into a feature instead of a product. A feature we're already paying for with Apple One subscription.

I just hope Apple take their time and don’t rush releases. This is how they have been for the past 25 years or so. They may not always be first, but when they do release something it was almost always better than others.

The name is dragging Apple down
Dragging it down for who?

100% of Apple customers know what Siri is.

A huge chunk of them use it for innocuous things, that work just fine.

A microscopic percentage of users know anything about the Siri debacle, or have the kind of fatuous issues that people on forums like this moan about.

To date, Siri is just a voice command feature with a name. It gets done basic tasks like playing songs or setting timers. What it needs to become is what ChatGPT is, and that exactly what Apple is working on doing. Once it does, people will gradually discover that Siri can do more than it used to.

The *only* way out of this is with a Beats-scale acquisition, and this is even more important than iTunes competing with Spotify ever was.

Perplexity has its own foundation model. It's the only lab small enough (i.e. not OpenAI or Anthropic) to fit as an Apple subsidiary and not trigger antitrust scrutiny. If Cook isn't in talks to acquire them, I don't know what he's thinking Apple is going to do on its own.
