Apple has big plans to improve Siri over the next few years, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman and Drake Bennett report.

Some Apple executives are now reportedly pushing to turn Siri into a true ChatGPT competitor. A next-generation, chatbot version of Siri has reportedly made significant progress during testing over the past six months; some executives allegedly now see it as "on par" with recent versions of ChatGPT. Apple is also apparently discussing giving Siri the ability to access the internet to gather and synthesize data from multiple sources, just like ChatGPT.

The report added that Apple now has artificial intelligence offices in Zurich, where employees are working on an all-new software architecture for Siri. This "monolithic model" is entirely built on an LLM engine that will eventually replace Siri's current "hybrid" architecture that has been incoherently layered up with different functionality over many years. The new model will make Siri more conversational and better at synthesizing information.

Google's Gemini is expected to be added to iOS 19 as an alternative to ChatGPT in Siri, but Apple is also apparently in talks with Perplexity to add their AI service as another option in the future, for both Siri and Safari search.

"Soon, we will be as good as they are now", does not inspire confidence. it's as if they think the other guys will stand still.

Arguing with Siri takes longer than just doing it myself, so I gave up long ago.

and will see the light of day in 2027:rolleyes:
You are probably right, but I hope Apple will not make us wait that long. I hope they will keep in mind that many of us have been waiting since 2011, and that is why we are relatively impatient now. There’s so many much more important things that I would rather see happen in my lifetime, but I would like to see actually excellent Siri before I go underground.

Even if Apple were at the top of their game software wise, AI and LLM development is moving at such a fast pace that Apple would need to have a big dedicated department to stay on par. They really should just deepen their partnership with ChatGPT or another AI company.

I think Apple is being delusional at this point. It’s clear they don’t have the skills, the people or the vision to deliver something half as good as ChatGPT, let alone ‘on par’. Cook has to go, his leadership has been appalling.
Well, of course, the buck stops at the head, but as much as I like Craig Federici, I think he is the one who had no foresight in this department. Probably because improving Siri would not have brought them anymore money. I guess it’s pretty obvious that I think Apple is greedy..

At this point they’ll need to pick a new name other than Siri or no one will give it a chance

Apple is not good at software. They should opt to only provide top qauilty tools for third party developers and open their systems for them to develop state of the art (system)software for at least macOS. Apple should stick to hardware only, maybe the most basic operating system. All Apple can and will do is bling-bling. So AI will onyl be bling-bling demo quality to show off. And then 'abandon and forget', only minor polish each year to keep them suckers shelling out.
Apple's development tools are a hot mess. Their APIs suck in most cases. Sure there are few success stories, but Apple has cut development to the bone so Cook can make money. That means that Apple's software foundation is cracked and rotten to the core. Sure they paste over it and if you happen to be able to afford 100s of software engineers to work around Apple's bugs, inconsistencies and just poor design, then you can make it (or maybe fake it) to look good.

Psst. Siri/Apple Intelligence already access the Internet and synthesizes responses from multiple source.

Yeah, it would be a lot more embarrassing if I didn’t also just read three articles about how Amazon is holding back some Alexa+ features later than expected

Perhaps, but Alexa is years ahead of Siri and is very usable and useful. So yeah, it's a lot more embarrassing even given that.

Haha, wonder if offices in Zurich don’t indicate “yeah EU, forget about apple AI being compliant” 🥹… or in fact available at all.

Do these executives see it as “on par” with ChatGPT because it’s now able to give the same responses when using ChatGPT via Siri that you’d receive if you asked the same question to ChatGPT directly? If so, that’s progress; but that’s also just table stakes.

Hey Siri, when will you actually be useful?

"Here's what I found on the web for that"

I find this amusing right after the story about not announcing things before they're ready.

I really doubt it. This is obviously a PR plant to make it seem like Apple has miraculously caught up with OpenAI / google.

Remember this is the company who every year since Siri launched, has proclaimed significant improvements for it, yet it’s still a dumpster fire.
Apple has bought many AI startups over the last few years, they’ve been gathering talent and I’m sure they’re cooking something.

I’d be willing to bet they have something very similar to chatgpt or gemini already working, but knowing them they won’t release it until it’s fully baked, they don’t rush things to market to keep up with the Joneses, that’s not how they operate. They won’t take the chance on a model that could hallucinate and tell a kid to eat rocks or something, their brand and their image is everything and it must not be tarnished

Hopefully. I'm sick and tired that I can't even answer. Basic questions. Unless it's something like distance or shut off the lights, etc..
