Look at Wonder Woman! Bare shoulders and Lord knows what else she is displaying. Good for Mr. Cook. Please consider re-robing Wonder Woman in something like this....

Wow, so movies like Stand By Me would probably be would probably be way too mature for the new Apple Streaming service, that is a shame.

THere are so many options which contain violence, sex, drug use, etc. I'm glad that Tim is staying clear of that. However, this must be frustrating to the writers, directors, and even actors, if they have to edit around constraints. It might have a rough beginning, but this may just prove that it'll be safer for your child to watch Apple TV with Muppets than HBO with Sesame Street. I'm a huge fan of Star Trek and was VERY turned off that Discovery used the f-bomb twice in one scene in one episode. That is not Star Trek's normal familiar and comfortable approach to expressing something. There are countless ways we can express things without sex, violence, or drugs.

Or, and bear with me here, because this is an out there thought, but maybe people should produce all types of content for TV and let other people decide what they want to watch.

What's one of the most popular shows in the world again? Oh right, it's Game of Thrones. Full of sex, violence and <gasp> dirty words.

Maybe Timmy's out to lunch on this one.

Anything that Make Timmy blush should not be on TV. There I said it. :D

I'm with Apple on this.
Good decision. N

Why does sex and violence equate entertainment?

There are both sex and violence in Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty.

Masses of violence in all the fantasy character films.
King Kong (sex violence) The Hulk / Avengers.

Star Trek = masses of violence

I have never understood why Apple is so opposed to mature content? There is no sexual content allowed on the AppStore etc.. Why do they feel the need to censor this content? There is nothing illegal with mature and adult content.

You obviously do not have kids.

Essentially Apple wants a boring streaming service. They can keep it to themselves, Netflix and amazon prime have already a lot of good content, without censoring anything.

So what? Apple service will be targeted only to people with kids? They can just have a kids account like Netflix, so adults can watch what they want and parents that like to keep their kids in a bubble are free to do so.

I’m not with him in this.

Not because I promote any of this in the real world.
Because of exactly that, I think it’s better that ‘difficult’ subjects are being processed through TV and media
I even think it’s why it’s there.

From being distressed earlier, I ‘m having fun with it today, because I know it’s not real.
Trying to understand it’s component, wonder how the actors reacted to it while doing it etc etc.
I even laugh my ass off when looking at it from that perspective.

But I do understand that immature people can be inspired of it and go get weapons and act as they see on screen. But that is actually a different problem. In US I assume it has to do with how easily guns are accessed.
Education about something doesn’t comes by quieting it down.

But ok Tim, put in your comforter and enjoy your TV.
I’ve heard that powerful men feel destressed of such games play. I’ve seen it on TV even. ;)o_O

so pretty sure comparing the sex content of something like american gods to sleeping beauty would not go over well. Very few new shows avoid pointless graphic sex scenes. Does not mean characters don't get it on, does not mean there is not violence, does not mean there is not character development, does not mean there is not swearing.

Even Disney gets around this "problem" via subsidiaries like Touchstone Pictures.

I get what Apple is trying to do here but a whole other view of the same decision is tying the hands of content creators. Artists do their best work with the least amount of constraints. If a "studio" is viewed as overly tying their hands, they may opt to work for others that won't constrain their vision(s) so tightly. Have we not already read a number of stories right on this very site about this director and that director and similar dropping out of engagements with Apple over this kind of stuff?

Consider some of the most popular programs on air right now. Then push them through this kind of filter to see which could make it into an Apple offering. If the end result is Apple playing Disney, why not just subscribe to Disney's upcoming service instead? They'll have a mountain of canned content in their service, plus whitewashed new, original content too.

If the end result is "expensive NBC" why not just stick with free NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, CW, etc?

Of course, all it takes is as little as one standout show to woo a fanbase, so maybe one of these we've read about is one+ of those. I suppose that's the hope of this service.

But iTunes already has and uses the "explicit" tag. Can Apple not take advantage of something it already has in place (for many years now) to allow content creators to freely create whatever they need to tell their stories as good as they can? And/or if there is legit worry about the Apple brand, they could do a Disney and create an iTouchStone: iHearRock? iSeeGranite? iFeelStar? etc. (names in jest of course, but the idea is the point... and already well pioneered- and proven- by Disney. The pristine Disney brand is not tarnished by Touchstone Puctures existing).

No reason not to try this approach to see if there is a big enough market for it. If not build a parental control system and slowly add more mature programs.

Did you even read the freakin' article?
"The article cites several sources familiar with Apple's original programming plans who say Apple wants to avoid putting its name to anything that could risk tainting its wider brand image."
There is nothing illegal with mature and adult content.
Where in the article does it mention anything about "illegal"?
Same goes for various other utilities such as torrentclients? Why are they not allowed? There is nothing illegal or wrong with peer-to-peer transfers and protocols. Why censor the AppStore in such a way?
Come on now, don't act naive. You know how torrents can be abused.
I don't feel the need for such utilities on my phone,
So out of all the things they don't allow on the app store, Torrent clients, which yo say you don't need on your phone, is the first thing that comes to mind.
but if Apple's goal is to make iOS being the future of computing, meaning that somewhere down the line it should replace my notebooks and desktops they can't continue filtering everything through the AppStore while also playing moral police and censor perfectly legal content just because of some strange reason they feel opposed by the content.
Fortunately for you and everyone else on the planet, iOS is not the only option for computing.
That's why the still sell 'computers" .
"We don’t believe in sort of watering down one for the other. Both [The Mac and iPad] are incredible. One of the reasons that both of them are incredible is because we pushed them to do what they do well. And if you begin to merge the two … you begin to make trade offs and compromises."

I can hear a sigh of relief from Netflix HQ. Now they know that Apple will not dig into their sales.

Well, that is true, until Apple says otherwise.
I loved the Keynote: Will iOS and macOS merge? Big NO falling.
*Applause*
Next up: soon, you can run iOS apps on your mac.
Errr...
With TCC and app notarization, macOS will become very much alike iOS, just that the apps don't have to come from the AppStore, but still adhere to AppStore rules.

How does subsidiaries and and content filters protect them from this:

"As a consumer-product company, Apple is especially exposed if content strikes a sour note," said Preston Beckman, a former NBC and Fox programming executive who spoke to WSJ. "For Netflix, the only risk is that people don't subscribe. With Apple, you can say, 'I'm going to punish them by not buying their phone or computer.'"

Think about how the public reacts to things Apple does or doesn't do.
Will a subsidiary or content filters really shield them if they are producing the show?

Let them try.
There is enough places to get mature content.
If they fail they fail, no harm no foul except to Apple.

"high-quality shows with stars and broad appeal, but it doesn't want gratuitous sex, profanity or violence."

So it looks like they are aiming to only release content that has a pg-13 rating or lower. That will only make it harder to produce high-quality shows as sex, profanity and violence are undoubtedly an important element when it comes to engagement and keeping people interested in a show, undoubtedly because that is what MOST people actually want to see as it keeps them engaged. Just look at the best rated shows, most of them are R rated because they have the ability to shock and engage during certain times. It might be good for their brand image but it won't make it easier to produce high-quality shows.

It doesn’t but I don’t want to watch shows that are like Disney films. It’s just not a realistic portrayal of life.

So we can forget getting some CGI porn such as iDebbie Does Dallas?

You still have an internet, don't you?

Just because it's legal does not make it acceptable content for children who WILL be watching on the phone or iPad of mom, dad, sister, uncle, etc.

They are already playing to loose. They shouldn't explicitly rule it out. The risk is that the shows won't be entertaining enough to capture an audience.

Is that "playing to lose" or is it "playing too loose"?
Not entertaining enough? Throw in some gratuitous sex. Look what it did to Pulp Fiction. Blood, guts, sex.
(And I do NOT like such pulp. I kept waiting for some redeeming social value to appear in that piece of work, but it never came.)

Well, good luck with that..

Those who have children will refute your addicted claim.
