I will say this, you DO need people with a passion for what they do and that are successful at it. Steve had a passion for design and technology and Apple was his playhouse. Hiring people with a passion for what they do is key for any business. It's something you cannot teach at an Ivy league school or have on your resume, you either have it or you don't. At least Tim seems to know that.
Dre is a highly successful and influential music producer, and likewise Jimmy.

Add to that that Hollywood and the entertainment industry is a "who you know" environment, so the Beats acquisition makes a little more sense.

amen!

lol!

maybe the image they are going for is:

AUGH! MY EYES! MY EYES ARE BURNING!!!!

I wouldn't be surprised if this is what they want. "Hey Justin Bieber wears a flat-brimmed hat! If we make a flat-brimmed hat, we'll be popular like him too!" It's exactly that kind of middle school mentality that's propped up the most famous idiots in our entertainment industry. Everything from hip-hop/rap's obsession with "bling" and pretending you're poor while making millions of dollars, and reality television.

You can have garbage like that in a society, but please, DON'T spread it all over Apple! PLEASE!

Ok I think just about vomited my dinner. So basically Apple is turning into a fashion company and using Beats to try and inject "cool" into the company, while also pandering to African-Americans and teenagers. #vomit

This is stupid...paying 3.2 billion for a couple of employees. LOL

Sorry, money not well spent. Apple is not the company that needs to try to be hip.

EDIT: I guess Jony Ive is not culturally-aware, whatever the F that means...

For 3 Billion you can probably get Tom Hanks and Angelina Jolie to negotiate movie licensing deals for Apple.

Why did your company buy Dell computers instead of Macs? Because somebody that walked in the door was selling them. The execs asked how much they cost...the salesman said "you save $500 per machine". Done deal.

How did Vin Diesel get in a Marvel movie? He used social media to pretend marvel was courting him....then he set up a meeting with marvel on his own. That allowed him to say "I met with Marvel". Then the swell of anticipation from Diesel's fans ensued.... Marvel laughed and gave Diesel a voice over job (Groot).

How do Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre become billionaire's? They walk into Apple and start talking about "now that Steve is dead..." "We are culturally aware..." "We know music". Then they leak it out to fans to build a swell of fan energy or "fanergy".

If this was Samsung instead of Apple people would be (rightly so) laughing their arses off. Pretty sad and pathetic that Apple thinks they need to buy cool. And what is this culturally aware nonsense? Make a great product and people will buy it. Don't pander to specific races/demographics.

This is also the thing that's really concerning to me... the underlying message here is that these two people are worth $3.2 billion.

Think about that.

2 people = $3,200,000,000

Why don't you just spend that money on an elaborate fake video that "proves" people never landed on the moon so you can give all the conspiracy theorists something to scream about. It would do the same thing, wouldn't it? I think I'm gonna be sick...

which is why it's fake.

Since you put it that way.

Of course I also remember the comments here when Apple was the first to make the Beatles catalog available.

I will reserve my judgement until there is an official announcement from Apple..... for all we know all those reports are pure BS.

So, what they're saying is that Apple's too white to make it in the world today? I had no idea Steve Jobs was plugged in to American Culture.

I'd fall over laughing if at the start of the WWDC keynote the lights dimmed all the way and then we just hear...

"Caaaaaaaaalifornia looooove"

And then boom, Dre appears.

Uh, that is a 2pac song, which Dre features in and co-produced. None the less, I LOVE 2PAC ha, but this would seriously be.... PATHETIC.

As much as I like Dre and his iconic presence to the Rap world, his products suck and are inferior to anything in its own price range.

I've been waiting for a streaming service from Apple, mainly because if I pay for something I would like it to be integrated into iOS. So I'm excited, but also quite nervous. I still don't like the way the iTunes is organized on the mobile devices, with a band that you own all 10 albums and all - it's cumbersome. Here's hoping they tweak the design.

So much racism, bigotry, and ignorance.

I am ashamed to be a part of a community that is so closed-minded and is filled with seemingly old white males whining about a dynamic world and culture. These are very smart moves by Apple, and believe it or not, I don't think they want to fade away into obscurity by not keeping up with the times.

Don't throw race into this.

I am not an old white male, but this deal is ridiculous.

If this deal goes through, it would be an insult to all the other companies Apple acquired before Beat, including NeXT computer.

This is hilarious. You are supporting this acquisition for no reason other than the race of Dr. Dre and then calling other people racist.

Goft20 is right

If the clueless, idiot comments in the thread are any representative of the typical "apple' user or 'apple' culture, it illustrates precisely why Apple must do this and why it is doing it and why it is a good move for Apple.

A. NeXT was 20 years ago
B. It was Steve Job's company
C. Steve was returning to Apple.

Please don't compare the purchase of NeXT with other purchases by Apple.

Ya, I don't buy this story either. No two people are worth 3.2 BILLION dollars (unless they are people who already have 3.2 BILLION dollars.) These rumors are getting more ridiculous every day.

In my mind, if Apple wants to pay 3.2 BILLION dollars in the general direction of Dre and Iovine, it is to purchase the Beats brand, which, like it or not, sells a crapload of (kinda crummy) headphones at great margins. And, like it or not, Beats is also a "Hip" tech/hardware brand with the younger crowd. I think it is not a crazy idea that a "Beats" phone from Apple, decontented and cheaper with it's own design ethos, might allow apple to get into some lower margin businesses, to feed the higher margin businesses... Maybe Apple could even reassign an engineer or twenty to improve Beats headphones...

The part of the story that DOES make sense, that the deal has almost crashed several times, sounds about right. I bet Cook was royally frosted when Dre began spouting off, sorta publicly, that he was going to be a Billionaire. Very un-apple like!

my $.02

a different reporter says Apple is looking to operate Beats as an external streaming music service to avoid cannibalizing its iTunes download business.

Reportedly, it's not that Apple is worried about losing its 30% cut of song downloads, but Apple launching a streaming music service could decimate the more than $1 billion that iTunes generates for record industry revenues.

Steve Jobs was never afraid of cannibalizing existing products. If a new product cannibalized an existing product, then that was a weak product to start with.
