I wish there was a way to back up locally to a NAS. Of course that's not going to happen, because that would make them sell less subscriptions.

“the Premier plan at $32.95 per month includes 2TB of iCloud storage and adds Apple News+ and Apple Fitness+”

The Premier family plan is $38 per month.

There is, but it's kind of clunky: set up a PC or Mac at home to sync down all your files.

I have a Windows VM on one of my hypervisors that I leave on all the time with OneDrive and iCloud installed. It is configured to sync everything from those cloud services to a virtual disk, which I can then back up using other backup software.

Edit: I see that you're probably referring to iOS backups. Similar thing there, you need a PC or Mac to do local backups, then set up a script and cron job to move/copy those files to the NAS. You can also buy iMazing, which has some additional automation capabilities.

Apple is a bit greedy on the base data they allow for iCloud.
I pay for the full boat family plan, its not cheap, but with it I don't have to think about backups too much on any of my devices, we use apple fitness extensively, along with Apple Music. So generally value is there... I've cut most other subscriptions but this one is ok for me.

I used to have large amounts of local redundant storage but when you factor in the costs of those systems, along with the electricity to run them (California, expensive) the subscription is just a better deal.

Does anyone else get their $0.99 refunded to their Apple Card if iCloud is the only charge left on the card at statement time? The $0.03 Daily Cash remains in my Apple Savings, so essentially I'm earning 3 cents a month if I pay off my card before they charge me for the iCloud.

Well yeah. I refuse to pay for it out of principle and it is a PAIN in the ass to keep messages, email and backups from devouring all 5 gigs & breaking syncing across all your devices. Nothing makes me look forward to the day i no longer have to own a cellphone more. iCloud is practically ransomware.
Replace your iPhone with a dumb phone that just makes calls and sends texts. Nothing to back up.

Weird. I'd expect Applecare + to be higher. I get it every year because I love not having to care about breaking or losing my phone. lol.
Could be because many credit cards (Chase Freedome Flex, Wells Fargo Active Cash, AmEx Platinum, Capital One Venture X, etc) offer free phone insurance if you pay your monthly phone bill with card. Too bad none apply to pre-paid phone plans, just post-paid.

I despise Apple’s cloud solution. Every time get a new Apple device, I have to race to turn off all the enabled icloud stuff. Even then, I usually have to manually delete all my contacts that were uploaded to the cloud. Also never logout/login to Apple on your device since they will again turn everything on.

Agreed. This is a no brainer.

With cloud being the most convenient, that is the luxury tax you pay to have content backed up.

Your iPhone that cost ~$1000 really costs that plus $36/yr (at minimum).

Maybe we call it a usage charge?
Geez that sucks, I'm in the US so I only pay $.99 a month which is only $12 a year.

Thanks. I know about local iPhone backups and use them occasionally. The UX around them is really not the best though. You always have to first establish "trust" between both devices, and more often than not, install some additional compatibility software. It's as if they make the process extra unpleasant, and it's quite clear that they don't really want you to do that route.

I'm talking about proper automated backups in my local LAN.

for iPhone/iPad: only because Apple is making the sync/backup with computer option less obvious.

Just looking at above comments so far, it looks like they don't even know that they can backup their iDevices to their computer.

The low base storage for Macs also steers the users to purchase an iCloud subscription.

Its funny, i almost have that already on my older iphone 6, and even my newer 13pm now only has 4 apps that arent stock apps, & since it cant play audio to anything anywhere without a headphone jack, is really reduced to a basic email/text/gps machine. 5gb is still barely enough for the phone to function. Next step is to ditch icloud as my personal email acct, probably.

Maybe it's because it's not really worth it, when you do the math? How often does your iPhone break to make it worthwhile?

For me family sharing, ability to sync mac and iPad Pro seamlessly is a big reason I prefer iCloud. I would love to see more tiers from Apple and a bump in storage.

I'm rather surprised the other services sell as well as indicated. A third of US iPhone owners pay for Apple Music? And for Apple Podcasts? That's hard to believe.

Probably because there is no other practical way to automatically backup device content.

Not because it's especially good, but because the 5gb limit makes cloud backup and photos impossible.

Thanks in large part to Apple not increasing the free 5GB in like forever.

Headline should read

"Report: iCloud Is the Most FORCED Apple Subscription Service in the US"

We were forced indirectly.

It's such a huge part of their "business" now

Lock down the Macs from aftermarket upgrades of RAM & SSD and then absolutely GOUGE customers on upgrade pricing at time of purchase

Know that your users probably need between 300-800gb of storage for photos, so only offer 200gb and 2TB plans so everyone has to upgrade to 2TB plans

It's just a rip off factory

Tim has completely MBA'd the place
It's so sad

This is so disingenuous, of course it is. The base storage has been 5GB since its inception in 2011! We're going on 13 years of no base storage increase.

At this point it's essentially either don't backup your phone (or do it manually and locally) or pay for more storage.
not hard to just auto locally backup and sync that back up to your preferred cloud storage.

I have 1 tb of iPhone storage and barely use 16gb of iCloud space for backups (minus photos). you can afford a $1/mo storage if you want to backup to iCloud
