I hear a lot of whining from folks. "Gee, why do I have to pay 99¢/month for a 50GB cloud account, when I can get it for free somewhere else?
Answer: you can't get iCloud storage for free anywhere else. Apple is the only one offering iCloud+ and you should have it for that alone. But add in Hide My Email, Private Relay, custom email domain and Homekit Secure Video, well, if all that isn't worth 99¢/month to you, don't pay it.
If you pay $1,200 - $1,500 for a phone, which we all do, a paltry 99 cents for 50GB iCloud storage should be the free tier.

Because you essentially HAVE to subscribe to it...
You CAN get a dongle/hub and EXPORT all your media to a micro SD (better redundantcize that single with another best practice) and delete from photos stored in iCloud-sound risky and inconvenient as hell? it is.

OR you can just plug your iPhone into a computer and copy over your photos and video like everyone has been doing with digital cameras for twenty-five years.

I use my phone just fine without paying for iCloud and I can still backup my phone to it.. I backup locally, too and sync my photos locally, so my iCloud backup size is only 1.5gb. My phone is 256gb.

Contacts, calendar and mail are with Google.
I do exactly the same. I don't use Google though for contacts and calendar. We are really luck, that iOS has decent support for CardDAV and CalDAV 🤞.

I'm worried though, that Apple could abandon local backups in the future.

The real test of Apple’s feelings towards its customers will be how long they continue to push the 5GB free…

I was thinking, why is there no option to select from photos what is on device and what can be iCloud storage I.e. videos on device and photos on iCloud?

Well yeah. I refuse to pay for it out of principle and it is a PAIN in the ass to keep messages, email and backups from devouring all 5 gigs & breaking syncing across all your devices. Nothing makes me look forward to the day i no longer have to own a cellphone more. iCloud is practically ransomware.
No it's not. Backup to a computer. Your pain is gone. There are trade offs to tech. Want convenience, you pay for iCloud. Want to save money, backup to your computer. You pay for convenience. Same everywhere :)

Starting a post this way isn't creating a helpful tone that will invite discussion

How will the whining about

1) Apple offers only 5Gb of free iCloud storage
2) Apple don't offer any iCloud storage size between 200Gb and 2Tb
3) Apple charges too much for local storage
4) Apple don't offer alternative ways to backup an iPhone / iPad

invite to a fruitful discussion?

You people have been complaining about some of these points for 10 years.

Could you go for a whole year without complaining about this stuff? I don't think so.

oh ok. Maybe I wasn't being 100% literal. ;). JUst making a point and a joke.

If I was single I would probably not use iCloud and just back up to the Mac myself. But ...then you mix in the family who don't all have Macs...and it's just too much of a pain.

The point being Apple obviously is heavily steering people to iCloud thru some underhanded means.

Apple should increase the iCloud storage space for Apple one family subscriptions. For a family of four, 2TB are not nearly enough space especially if parents are Apple users since 2005 and have documents, videos, files all over the place… the amount of space for family plans really needs to be reconsidered..

In your opinion. I paid $399 for my last iPhone (2020 SE). Happy to pay 99¢ a month. You get way more than 50GB icloud storage, you know. You get Hide My Email, Custom Email Domain, Private Relay, and HomeKit Secure Video.

And as I wrote, you are free not to buy it. It chaps my hide that people whine about paying 99¢/month for all that, but are perfectly fine spending a car payment every month at Starbucks. What should Starbucks give you for free after spending $250-$300 a MONTH year after year? Most of them don't even let you pour your own cream or sugar anymore, so you can forget taking a cup of half & half home for free.

Especially when Apple determines how convenient it is to back up locally.

Thanks, I don’t use that feature, I’m old school and do it manually ;)

I love the convenience of not having to initiate a sync/backup to my local machine. It's almost like using iCloud. I don't like having a lot of my data in "the cloud"

Apple is happy to sell you more storage. Oh - you want Apple to give you more gratis? Fat chance.

It's the only one I pay for and use ... and yet I'm still upset about it as they force me to the 2TB plan for $10/mo as opposed to offering something for less that is somewhere between 200gb and 2TB, which I'm sure they know a ZILLION people would choose
So, $10/month is far too much for you; you want something for more like, say, $7/month. Just curious, are you a retired person on fixed income? You should write Apple, as they might be willing to consider a Senior discount.

I think I've tried this "sync over wifi" features many years ago, but it actually sync'd. I use Apple Music (no subscription though) and there were songs in my library that I did not want on my iPhone and the only way was to manually sync/backup, well, that's what I remember, as I said, its many years ago.
