I’m downsizing this go around! Going from the 12 pro max to the 13mini! Just bought a real camera(Canon) so don’t need the fanciest anymore! Also use my iPad Air 4 for consumption so no need for the larger phone! I will go back when apple makes an 8.5 inch iPhone!

And when they don’t have an 8.5 inch phone you buy a mini?

Does not sounds like much of an upgrade this year, unless a pro photographer. I upgrade every year and still probably will, but there is some doubt in my mind on this year.
In my opinion, you should consider to upgrade only every second or third year.
Why? More sustainable and your happiness over more substantial improvements will increase.
But just my 2 cents.

I find upgrading every year is advantageous as trade in values are still very high and really ends up cost wise being the same as upgrading every other year, especially when I use my military discount too.

When they make an 8.5 inch phone I won’t need an iPad for consumption! As it stands I don’t need a large phone when I have my iPad! Not that difficult!

Apple’s response: we believe there is no demanding need for majority (Cupertino only) of our customers to connect their iPhone to a computer, to a car, or to anything. Wireless charging has been thriving in the past few years and we think it’s charging speed is so good that cable charging has lost its competitive edge. Without charging port, we are able to achieve 5 meter 90min waterproof rating, better than ever before.

In all seriousness though, Apple better find another way to offer connectivity to a computer, rather than just shoehorn their “courageous” charging port removal decision to end user.

I hope they don’t go portless, because then I would have to buy an aftermarket adapter to have wireless CarPlay ($100+) and I have to hope that it works seamlessly. That would deter me from upgrading for a few years if they go portless.

For many people that don't like to use cloud services, local storage is obviously important and I can see some users (not me) running near full on 512GB. Probably my main reason from upgrading from my iPhone 11 to the 13 is for the qualcomm modem which I believe is better than the intel modem. I rarely see anyone posting on the benefits of a better modem. It is a cellphone after all isn't it?

I will admit, coming from the XS Max with the intel modem to the 12 Pro Max with the Qualcomm modem, my connectivity has improved more than 90%. I don’t have the issues I had with my XS Max.

From an economic point of view that's probably true. I was thinking more about the sustainability. We should buy what we need, not what we are able to buy. But that's still a looong way to go.

True - but when you trade in or sell someone else gets your phone. 😊

That is true but it's only better than leaving your old phone in the drawer.
You still buy a new phone. The less new phones are bought - the less need to be produced.

NO, that's NOT correct !

Please don't pretend to know if you don't !

um they are correct at least for ProRAW, but then I’m not surprised knowing you, you didn’t do your research properly

and regarding “Prores” how would you know if it is in the iPhone 13 or not, ah that’s right you don’t compared to reliable leakers who have said that it could be there

excited for this one. i skipped last year's iPhone 12 update. every other year seems about right these days. incremental at best updates. RAW photos, 120hz, 1TB plus last year's (which honestly right now can't put my finger on...indicating wasn't worth the yearly update for me) and seems like a good time to jump in again.
