The last time they tried a major design (MDD G4 to G5) they ended with a machine that was larger and heavier but had half the number of optical and hard drive bays. They've reached the pinnacle of tower design with the Mac Pro, why fix what isn't broken. The only thing they need to change is the lack of a Conroe model for those without corporate sized budgets.

A revisit to the G4 design, only sleeker... perhaps polycarbon with a subtle gloss finish....

yeah baby yeah!

I was always a huge fan of that design. Just looked "pretty" to me.

Those old G3 B&W's and all the G4's STILL look better than the most modern PC box out there... THAT is a testament to industrial design.

I wonder how this re-design will look. It looks good as it is, even though the design is getting kinda old. It blends in with all the other products.

When the 8-Core Mac Pro comes out, I have a feeling that we will have a re-design.

Apple needs to revemp its entire desktop line in my view and stop crippling 1 model for another having said that they use to produce models that gave you the warm fuzzys such as Cube,G4iMac & Quicksilver. Stuff they have now is bland with little spark or imagination and boring looking near generic. Plus Apple needs to rethink its hate of the videocard. Iam convinced they Hate Video cards and the gamers and those who use a computer as a Tv. How can a modern computer maker ignore the TV and Games?

They need a all new line of desktops that doesnt alienate so many buyers and allows the consumer to configure a tower for Consumer needs not just workstation needs.

Aircraft are built with everything neatly placed in an ideal location. Perhaps this is why we both like the design of the case. (I'm an aerospace engineering student.)

Just for the heck of it, I got out the calipers and micrometer and did some measuring inside the MP and a Dell 390. It would have been nice to have the drawings, but you could easily measure the tolerance build-up in the Dell, but not in the Apple. There is no question, Apple is using a much more advanced manufacturing process, especially SPC. The Mac just has everything fit. The Dell does not.

Top Vents is a *BAD* idea...

Venting through the top is a bad idea in my opinion.
  1. Easy for dust and other objects to fall into the system. (And liquid spills.)
  2. Makes the top unusable to put something (or two) on top of the system - Firewire and/or USB hubs and/or external drives.
  3. Venting out the top requires a way different system placement than back venting does. And this placement could require new computer furniture or placing the system too far from the person using it which in turn would make using the optical drive inconvenient and possibly require cable extensions.

I'd really like to see the Mac Pro have user installable external 5.25" drive bays like PCs to add DVD burners. Installing hard drives look easy enough w/ the Mac Pro. Adding/replacing the DVD drive looks pretty hard.

i'd like to see a smaller Mac Pro but it'd be hard to fit 1TB of hard drive space with 8 cores (rumored) while keeping everything cool and functioning properly.

i'd also like to see something besides brushed metal. Apple's used it for a while and it might be time to move on.

Apple hasn't used brushed metal since the original Powerbook G4.

Hmm... Mac mini Mac Pro ?? :)

sort of. I say the Mac Pro stays as it is and a new Mac SemiPro is launched:

It will just be a Mini with desktop components instead of laptop memory and HDD, plus a standard slot for graphics cards.

As for the Pro, besides the regular component improvements, all they need to do is colour it a bit darker and claim the case is made out of unobtanium :D

I would definitely buy that if it existed!

I hated the G5 look for a long time, but I've grown to like it. The handles are unusable on it, so I hope they fix that issue. But the aluminum finish, and brilliantly designed interior is just amazing.

Top air cooling is a fantastic idea, can't wait for an update if it actually happens.

my thought as well. the cube's venting was from cool air below rising and blowing out on top.

furthermore - MacPro is not the only mac without iSight - the MacMini does not have it.

I imagine since hot air rises it reduces the need for fans if the heat is vented through the top. Wasn't that the idea on the Cube?

That actually looks kinda cool. I also liked the B&W G3 and G4 towers. Just pull down the side and you have everything there! Here's the desktop lineup I'd like to see:
Low-End Mac
-Mac Mini

Midrange Mac
-Midtower
-2 5.25" external drive bays for user installable DVD/Blu-Ray/HD-DVD drives
-2 3.5" internal drives for hard drives
-Single multi core proc
-1 16x PCIe for graphics & 2-3 slower PCIe slots

High-end Workstation
-Full tower
-4 5.25" external drive bays for user installable DVD/Blu-Ray/HD-DVD drives
-4 3.5" internal drives for hard drives
-2+ or more multi core procs
-2+ 16x PCIe for graphics in SLI/Crossfire & 3-4 slower PCIe slots

All-in-one
-iMac

Something for everyone, while still simple enough not to confuse the average consumer. I remember the days when there was the Performa, Quadra, Power Mac and a whole lot of different kinds of Macs, but no good way to distinguish between them or know which one was for you. Just remember that the average consumer doesn't know that much about computers. As long as Apple makes it obvious which group a specific computer goes for, we're good. While many of you who read this forum probably know a bit about computers, just remember there are a LOT of people who don't know jack about computers.

...and the Power Mac G3 all-in-one...

...and the G3 iMac...

...and the G4 iMac...

...and of course the Cube...

I'm sure plenty of others preceded those, even.

Apple's Mac Pro (PowerMac) has ALWAYS matched the OS... and if the rumors are correct...

I predict Black gloss.

Black gloss is the new black.

I'd like that.

I noticed at the Macworld keynote the background image was a black Apple on a black background with a bright white 'starburst', whereas the Apple always been white. Might hint at a subtle change of image to freshen the brand's perception.

(Yes, I am clutching at straws..)
