I hold no delusions of the mini model being some secret juggernaut. It's a niche form factor released to gauge interest, and that interest wasn't strong enough to warrant its continued existence.

Sucks for someone like myself, or any other lover of smaller phones. But I do take solace in knowing that because the 13 mini has such strong internals, it could easily last from launch in Late 2021 to Late 2026, whenever that generation releases and you *might* need to upgrade to whatever is available.

There is a very good reason why: A lot of people around the world depend on their phone to do their job, not their laptops.

The laptop class is quickly becoming a minority. The phone class is the majority.

This is especially true in poorer countries. If you're going to have one computing device, buy the one with the big screen.

I'm part of the laptop class so I own a 13 Mini. In fact, I have a 16" MBP. A bigger phone has very little use to me except the better battery life.
I think this does help capture the essence of why larger phones are more popular (Plus versus Pro Max debates notwithstanding). The era of personal computing with a desktop or laptop is over; people live through their phones now, and for the large majority that phone, by virtue of being a current year model, is not only more than capable of handling all their computing needs, but also more powerful than any comparable desktop or laptop they could buy within that price bracket And likely without the benefit of installment plans as most carriers provide here in the States.

I maintain that Apple will bring back the mini form factor. Might take three or four years, but it'll be back. Much the same way they brought back the 5S design in the SE 1, it will return. I'd ballpark 2025 for such a return, which would be a good time for an upgrade for those of us who bought into the 13 mini at launch.

We're threading in very small numbers with the 14 Plus being only very marginally doing better than the 13 Mini - but overall it's still more or less a product looking for its market and it isn't doing too well.

They should keep making them regardless, just in scaled back numbers.

There's no way the Mini models sold fewer than Google Pixels. They probably sold more than most models of the iPad. Not every iPhone needs to be the best-selling iPhone.

A lot of the iPhones I see in my area in Canada are the Pro models and 13/12/11/XR models. Again, it might be a slight bias because a lot of those are at the university.

Being in the laptop class, I used to not understand why people love big phones so much. Then I had to find an apartment in another country and my real estate agent did all the work on a phone. Everything. Even the contract. I quickly understood why big phones are popular.
I like bigger screens, but I'd still rather do most things at home on my laptop. Sure the phone is nice on the go but not at home for most things.

Apple's iPhone 14 Plus appears to be selling better than the iPhone 13 mini it effectively replaced in the company's flagship lineup, based on display panel shipment data provided by Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC).

iphone-14-iphone-14-plus-in-hand-feature.jpg

According to the DSCC report, which compares iPhone panel shipment data from June 2022 through April 2023 (allocating a two-month forecast), shipments for the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus are 59% higher than they were for the 5.4-inch iPhone 13 mini over the equivalent period year-on-year.

That's despite evidence suggesting that the iPhone 14 Plus is the least popular model in the current series.

Although the iPhone 14 Plus appears to be doing a lot better than the iPhone 13 mini, it's far behind the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which takes a 36% share of overall panel shipments for the series. The iPhone 14 Pro accounts for 28% of shipments, while the iPhone 14 takes a 25% share. The iPhone 14 Plus meanwhile languishes behind the others with a 11% share.

Overall, the iPhone 14 series looks to be marginally more popular than the previous series, with a 2% increase in the number of year-on-year panel shipments as of April, apparently buoyed by increased sales of the more expensive Pro models at the cost of fewer standard iPhone 14 models being sold.

Taking into account potential stockpiling and shipment lags, monthly panel shipment numbers are unlikely to mirror the exact same number of iPhone units being sold in any given month. Nevertheless, the combined numbers for the 11-month period provide a likely accurate overall picture of sales.

? Fake news perhaps

The 14 Plus (max? I get the names mixed up) is likely a symptom of the success of the pro max. The extra money to jump up is seen as enough of a value. Once you take into account that most people will break up that difference over a 36 month plan, its only a couple dollars a month.

Not every model needs to be the best selling iPhone. Except when it does in order to appease the only demographic that matters to Apple: the shareholders.

If anyone wants a Mini they need to buy the last generation (13) model. Maybe it ain't dead yet but I bet it will be in about 6 months time. It's likely the only phones that Apple will sell are the 15 series, iPhone 14, iPhone 13, and SE.

With the small battery inside the Mini they aren't going to last long. You'll need to pay for a battery replacement.

Apple is going to kill off the Mini and those who bought them will be replacing the battery every couple years. The Mini is going to need all the "Long live the iPhone Mini!" it can get.
Wonder if they keep track of the models that get battery replacements. Will they see how many Minis are getting them and realize they could be getting hundreds of dollars for a device instead of around a hundred for a battery replacement?

Well, Apple have a lot of different products in their lineup for a lot of different customers.

I will hang on to my Mini as long as I can, and put my faith that it will be renewed.
Apple may not release new models every year. But I think they know about their variations of customers, just when it comes to phones as well as all other products they are selling.

Don’t be so dramatic. Apple knows their customers. Otherwise they wouldn’t released a small perfect phone at all again. Next it might be 2 minis - a regular and a Pro. Wouldn’t surprise me at all.

The fact is most people don't want tiny phones. You might see people confessing their love of their Minis on here or someother sites but that's a very vocal minority and out there in the real world people want 6-7" phones. Not silly little 5.4" toy phones.

I have a 6.7" iPhone and feel that's too small for me. I'd be happy if Apple made a 7.1-7.3" model.

Again, a big phone is great if you rely on it to do everything. If you have other devices (a tablet or a computer), a smaller phone can actually be much more convenient as your “on the go” device. Besides, no matter how big your iPhone’s screen is, we still cannot use them in a split-screen mode, which is a pity for people using them for “productivity”.

The iPhone mini failure is purely down to a poor battery and lower tier materials, I'm a big fan of that size, but those were the main reason I went for 13 Pro, despite the fact it's too big from my point of view.
As far as the 14 failure, it's Apples fault for trying to flog a year old tech 😏

What a silly proclamation.

"A version of the current model that's available for sale currently is more popular than a version of the prior model that's not available for sale right now (and for which there is no comparable-sized version in the current line-up)."

Duh...

First of all, the iPhone 13 mini is still being sold new by Apple. Secondly, these charts are comparing current 14 models versus then current 13 models for same period the prior year.

I blame the imminent yellow iPhone 14 Plus for this.

Apple needs to bring back iPhone Mini. You are dearly missed 🫠
🤣
Agree about the Mini, but they need to make the battery a lot better and make it out of premium materials like the Pro's (I don't care about the third camera)
Those were the reasons I reluctantly went with the 13 Pro, rather than the Mini 😏

Wonder if they keep track of the models that get battery replacements. Will they see how many Minis are getting them and realize they could be getting hundreds of dollars for a device instead of around a hundred for a battery replacement?

FWIW, my 12 mini (in use since Dec 2020) still has its original battery with 84% (Apple estimate) and 89% (CoconutBattery estimate) remaining.

The phones are too damn big. I'll upgrade from the 12 mini to the 13 mini this summer out of concern they may be gone for good. Battery life hasn't been a big concern - when are you really that far from a charger? It's like demanding the electric car with a 350-mile range when 99% of vehicle trips are under 100 miles.
