Many valid points. Moreover, Apple Fitness+ is not available worldwide. Apple News+ is in how many countries? Four maybe? Apple Card is US only thing I think. Those products are far from perfect. But also they are limiting their potential themselves...

The only reason I have ATV+ is because it’s included with a student Apple Music subscription. Otherwise, I would only subscribe to ATV+ to binge a few shows/movies (Severance, Ted Lasso) and then cancel.

I have no interest in Apple Fitness and Apple Arcade, so it’s not surprising subscriber numbers are low for both.

They just need to change the damn name.
You can't sell an Apple TV, and then expect people to know that there's a subscription service called Apple TV+.

No one knows that it exists or how to even find it.

They need a name that separates it a bit, so people without Apple products know they can actually watch it.
I agree. Having a physical device with a nearly identical name for a streaming service was a bad idea. So many think you need to buy an Apple TV to watch Apple TV.

A service wth the name “Apple“ in it can only survive inside of Apples wallet garden. As soon as it faces competition, it is dead. But Apples universe is too small for streaming or music services, since you need every customer you can get to make a dollar.

Times are tough right now, and people are severing or pausing subscriptions. TV+ just doesn't have enough content to compete; they need to either go all-in with TV+ or quit complaining. It seems like TV+ has always been a write off... a half-hearted trojan horse strategy for attracting people to the Apple infrastructure of products. Most of the content they do have is quality, but it's just not enough.

Sometimes businesses will have divisions that are loss making. But the key thing to remember is that sometimes you have to look at the whole, bigger picture. Sometimes it’s better to offer a whole set of services, even if some don’t perform well. As sometimes the whole set of services keeps customers loyal and in a particular ecosystem.

The news about Apple Music doesn’t surprise

Universal Music Group hinted that only Spotify and Youtube were really growing in the music streaming space last year.

I switched over to AM last year because my gf prefers it, it’s a long way behind Spotify in everything other than the sound quality.

The iOS app crashes more than any other app i’ve ever used on an iPhone, the desktop app remains a dumpster fire and the general ux of the app is very poor.

The biggest mistake they made was trying to shoehorn the local library management stuff in with the steaming service. They should’ve kept itunes around for those who want that and built a streaming app for AM from the ground up.

It’s a shame, it feels like they’ve just ceded this market to Spotify. That is problematic for the music industry and for artists.

Oh I know ALL about it
And it's not how business should work

They've built it all up with investor money funding things that aren't profitable in hopes of putting competitors out of business and then "owning" markets

It should be illegal
Ok, hurry up, call Apple, Netflix, Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, Meta, Alphabet and all the others and let them know how business should work, since you know and they don't.
Now, I'm not saying it shouldn't be illegal, I'm saying that's how it works and since it does and, in many case, it seems to ultimately be profitable to allow some losses somewhere sometimes...

I tried News+ but the content is lacking. I now subscribe to Readly because they have a much wider selection of newspapers and magazines.

Cancelled long ago. Severance is the only thing worth watching and a lot of viewers just wait for the series to be released, then watch it inside of a month and cancel. I think Tim Cook reign's has run its course and its time for fresh leadership.

Notice how pivotal iCloud+ is?

See why they screw everyone on base storage and component upgrade pricing?

Notice how they never bump the included iCloud storage (or add to it per new device purchased) so you have to pay for iCloud+?

Is it more clear now why they offer no paid iCloud storage options between 200GB & 2 TB!?

The iCloud+ "business" is largely a racket

People are getting screwed, by design
Meh. I never paid for iCloud storage and never will. Its free and easy to back everything up to local storage.

Over the past few years my favourite TV series are on Apple TV.
However, every time I try and promote this to people, no one is interested when they hear Apple TV. I've tried.

There's a few movies I like but none are re-watchable. IMO, a lot of money has been wasted on the movie side of Apple TV.

Favourite list below -
Severance - great although 2nd series was too slow
Silo - again too slow
Slow Horses - one of the best
Ted Lasso
Dark Matter - first half excellent then faded into rubbish
Foundation - excellent
For All Mankind - excellent
Presumed Innocent - excellent
See - good at the time
Sugar - excellent
Defending Jacob - excellent
Tehran - another favourite
Wecrashed - good
Liaison - fantastic
Was not aware of Liaison, thanks for the heads-up @G3Blue !

They have many great shows on there. Shows that I love.

Apple might be losing money on that particular service, but I reckon it helps keeping folks in the ecosystem, and maybe even draw a few folks into Apples other products and thereby it helps making money.

Basically, the money from Apple services is from rent seeking (app store revenue and iCloud+). The parts that actually provide a service to people aren't popular or profitable

I do think TV+ have some very good shows. Not enough to sub year round, though

Streaming services like Netflix and Prime have been successful in part because they’ve starting producing a lot more local content, as in content not from America and not in English.

The content on Apple TV plus is very hit or miss. For every decent show there are what seem like 5 shows that seem exactly alike to me. Something happens to someone and that person has to come to terms with it. Most of the shows honestly put me to sleep. The only decent recent show is slow horses. Severance had a great first season but season 2 is painfully bad. I stopped watching.
You mean like literally every other streaming service out there? I'd say on Netflix, the ratio is more like 20 to 1.

They can also purchase Skydance Media and Paramount Global or Warner Bros. Discovery and Legendary Entertainment for companies with more experience with premium content creation and streaming services.

Isn’t it a loss leader to sell more product also….
