Phones really don't need full Wi-Fi 7 at 320Mhz nor do tablets thats just pointless, the speeds you get are way more than you need at 160Mhz. Well that's my view. Also WiFi 7 is still not hitting the market hard because nobody wants to pay £700 for a router these days.
There are already $200-$300 WiFi 7 routers available. I got one 3 months ago and it’s great. The price point you’re quoting is outdated.

iPhone Mini...swing and a miss. iPhone Air...also a swing and a miss. The sad part is, we will have to read countless posts from the Air Clan about how awesome this phone was and how they should bring it back for the next 10+ years.

Compromises:
1. Single speaker
2. Single camera
3. Extremely poor battery life (due to thinness)
4. Inferior C1X 5G modem compared to SD X80 in Pro series
5. Too thin to hold.
6. Busted Wifi 7 that is incapable of 320 Mhz channel width on 6Ghz.
7. No mmWave which is in Pro models.
8. No display output via USB-C to an external monitor or TV.
9. Still USB 2.0 speeds for a premium device in 2025.
10. Slower binned SOC (again due to thinness and heat concerns)

Did I miss anything?
Wow I didn't even know about no display output. I connect my iPhone 17 Pro Max to an older TV regularly to watch Apple TV very often and used to do the same with my 16 Pro Max. I almost bought an Air instead. Glad to know now that I didn't make a mistake in that it didn't have a feature I thought every modern USB-C iPhone had.

Apple is "drastically" cutting production of the iPhone Air and shifting focus toward the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro models, Nikkei Asia reports.

iPhone-Air.jpg

The business publication claims to have learned of a major cut to iPhone Air production motivated by weaker-than-expected consumer interest, nearly to "end of production levels." Despite early reports of the iPhone Air selling out within hours of launch in China, the overall reception has apparently been lukewarm in the region.

Combined with weak demand in other markets, sales projections have dropped significantly. Although Nikkei declined to disclose the full extent of the production cut or which suppliers will be affected, it says that the changes may be seen in Apple's supply chain in the coming months.

A new KeyBanc Capital Markets survey for investors reveals "virtually no demand for iPhone Air, and limited willingness to pay for a foldable." Demand for other iPhone 17 models is said to be healthy but measured, with the mix "continuing to shift toward Pro and Pro Max models." Moreover, AI features have yet to meaningfully influence buying decisions.

Last week, Japan's Mizuho Securities said that Apple will reduce iPhone Air production by one million units this year. Meanwhile, Apple apparently plans to increase production of iPhone 17 models by two million units. A separate report claimed that Samsung has canceled plans to release a successor to its own iPhone Air rival, the Galaxy S25 Edge, due to low sales.

Bring back the Mini!

Someone at Apple really had a bug up their butt about making the phone as thin as possible, despite all of the compromises, and the power to push this through. Hopefully that person has been sat down in the corner with a juice box and some cookies and told to be quiet. All for what -- less than half an ounce?
Half an ounce? Huh?

The phone is significantly thinner than both other models, and way lighter compared to the Pro. Not to mention it's built like a tank.

The hilariousness watching this forum literally become so disoriented as Air refused to bend and shatter snd break. Funny how durability isn't one of the pros of the Air that's listed in addition to thinness and lightness. Not to mention the C1X chip, which is amazing for low signal

Apple is dissolving into a hardware engineering-led company, where their progress is measured in more RAM, more processor speeds, more cores. more bus speeds, more SSD speeds...

It's ironic the advertising that mentions faster AI processing speed, when Apple has no good story on what useful AI feature is on the device needing that much power.

Likewise with the Air. This was an engineering challenge that wasn't aligned with consumer wants.

Who physically connects their phone to the TV? And over USB C?. This sounds made up. 99.99999% of people AirPlay.

I wouldn't mind a more elegant version of this 👇 maybe 2 lenses instead of 3, usb 3.2 and stereo speakers

You're spot on here.

There's nothing wrong with having a 'design-led' high-end phone to accompany the 'feature-led' Pro. But it needs to have ALL of the features of the regular iPhone.

Simply put make the Air slightly thicker, put in a second camera, put in a second speaker, put in a better battery, but keep it nice and svelte with glossy titanium sides, a Pro chip, a slightly larger screen, and you've got a winner of a product. And something which regular iPhone users might be tempted by.

The current product is a disaster.

The difference in weight between the i17Air and the i17 is less than half an ounce.

The average consumer associates the single camera with being budget or low end these days. But then you see the $999 price for the Air and question why pay more for the inferior device? Most aren’t going to trade features for thinness and looks. The 17 is seen as the better value by most consumers. It appears that Apple can’t figure out a true “middle device” between Pro and regular iPhones.

Colour me surprised, and it will be just the same with a 3900 18" foldable iPad...!!! Or a touchscreen MacBook Pro!

These are fair points, but they're not going to affect the vast majority of users.

The only things you could really make an argument that most people would miss is single camera and smaller battery than the Pro models.

You could start making the same argument for MacBook Air and say it shouldn't exist as well? or iPad Air?
My non tech friend got one and returned it in a week, siting the camera, usb 2 and battery anxiety. That's a normal non tech person. If Apple dropped the price to match the limitations they might have a huge hit on their hands.

The fact that it’s thin is really cool, but that double camera bump is just awful. I do understand the technical and physical reasons behind it, but making it so thin and then having to add that bump just ruins it. I don't buy it just for that.
It's a future thing, though.

You'll end up with the phone being that bump only, and then the rest is just screen and battery. From a production perspective it's like a dream come true, just slotting that into whatever screen + battery that is the design that they want.

1, 2, and maybe 7 are real issues. The rest are fake problems made up by people who spend too much time on tech forums.
