Oh ok. Sorry about that. It’s crazy. I had my phone charging the other day with both my kids on hotspot and still can’t achieve the overheating people are talking about.
People just make stuff up because they are so displeased a thinner and lighter product doesn't overheat or break or have a horrible battery. You'd think they'd be happy?

When I first saw the iPhone Air in a store, it looked and felt amazing, and I almost swapped my iPhone 15 PM for it! But after a little thought, I realized I’m not ready to give up the awesome triple camera and stereo speakers. If they could add at least a double camera setup and stereo speakers, I would’ve bought one right away!
Thing is really nice in hand. I’m with you on the other things.

Apple is "drastically" cutting production of the iPhone Air and shifting focus toward the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro models, Nikkei Asia reports.

iPhone-Air.jpg

The business publication claims to have learned of a major cut to iPhone Air production motivated by weaker-than-expected consumer interest, nearly to "end of production levels." Despite early reports of the iPhone Air selling out within hours of launch in China, the overall reception has apparently been lukewarm in the region.

Combined with weak demand in other markets, sales projections have dropped significantly. Although Nikkei declined to disclose the full extent of the production cut or which suppliers will be affected, it says that the changes may be seen in Apple's supply chain in the coming months.

A new KeyBanc Capital Markets survey for investors reveals "virtually no demand for iPhone Air, and limited willingness to pay for a foldable." Demand for other iPhone 17 models is said to be healthy but measured, with the mix "continuing to shift toward Pro and Pro Max models." Moreover, AI features have yet to meaningfully influence buying decisions.

Last week, Japan's Mizuho Securities said that Apple will reduce iPhone Air production by one million units this year. Meanwhile, Apple apparently plans to increase production of iPhone 17 models by two million units. A separate report claimed that Samsung has canceled plans to release a successor to its own iPhone Air rival, the Galaxy S25 Edge, due to low sales.

There will probably be no Air next year. Just like the Samsung Edge. And all those who came up with “my Air is better than Pro” or “why I don’t need better cameras or battery” will end up holding (a very expensive) lemon in their hands. I’ve always felt that the Air was a prototype and Apple is using it to fund/finesse the foldable iPhone…..

Compromises:
1. Single speaker
2. Single camera
3. Extremely poor battery life (due to thinness)
4. Inferior C1X 5G modem compared to SD X80 in Pro series
5. Too thin to hold.
6. Busted Wifi 7 that is incapable of 320 Mhz channel width on 6Ghz.
7. No mmWave which is in Pro models.
8. No display output via USB-C to an external monitor or TV.
9. Still USB 2.0 speeds for a premium device in 2025.
10. Slower binned SOC (again due to thinness and heat concerns)

Did I miss anything?
the battery isnt extremely poor at all though.

Colour me surprised, and it will be just the same with a 3900 18" foldable iPad...!!! Or a touchscreen MacBook Pro!
They haven’t marketed the Air enough. People have fomo and don’t understand some of the sacrifices on the Air aren’t much and it’s cheaper for a way better looking phone. My dad that is 77 said he’s getting the pro even though he did it was heaving and ugly because it’s the best and didn’t even know about the Air and I asked him for $100 cheaper and lighter can he sacrifice a second speaker? The 8x zoom? And battery not improving from the 16 pro and was yes across the board. He had no idea. He owns AirPods and the Mac Headphones. He never needed the 5x or wide cameras. It was a no brainer.

In my group of friends it’s become popular as the new Pro is just too bulky. Know of several who’s gotten the Air and just one who went for the Pro. It’s admittedly a small demographic but it’s a hit with 40+ Scandinavians :)
Guess we like minimalism and form over function.

I must be in the minority but I absolutely love this phone. For me, its up there with the iPhone 4 and iPhone X.
I love my iPhone X very much too. I actually changed the battery and gave it a new life despite moving on to later iPhones. But, it still has a poor camera and bad battery life, same trade offs as the iPhone Air.

I would say that every item from 4 onwards are pro concerns & people bothered about stuff like that probably shouldn’t even get a regular 17.

The air looks great and imho it’s the future of the regular iPhone, but I think in an age when people are on their phones constantly - for better or for worse - average battery life, one speaker and just one camera and a $999 price tag are compromises way too far for most people.

The 17 Pro needs the Air screen size.

Perhaps make the Max 7.0in screen size.

edit: battery has life has been better on my Air than my 16 Pro.

You telling me that putting a case on a phone makes it bigger ?
Tis true. Depending on the case, the same size as the regular pro. Like i said. If only all buyers realized that beforehand. They literally make thick rugged cases FOR a phone designed around slimness as its main anpeal and people in the iPhone forums will show it off proudly. I know you’re just being sarcastic, but the entire thing gets to the point of silliness.

My wife and I are among those "few" that got an iPhone 17 Air. Coming from several years of Pro Maxes (most recently the 16 Pro Max), we were both impressed by the weight, thinness and the solid/quality feel of the device. From an esthetic perspective, the camera bump strip is beautiful compared to the huge honker on the 17 Pro Max. From a functional perspective, the phone is easier to operate one-handed, slides more easily in/out of jeans pockets, and can be held one-handed for longer periods of time than the 16 Pro Max, due to its weight.

So what do we miss? We travel frequently and really miss the optical zoom and, to a lesser extent, the ultra-wide lens. The smaller battery capacity doesn't bother us at all - and, of course, is one of the reasons the device is so light. In day-to-day life at home, we get through a whole day (although with my wife's game addition, she does occasionally have to top off on a charger or attach a power bank. We got an Anker Nano MagSafe power bank for that as well as for trips. But as our trips tend to be pretty 'civilized', we haven't needed it yet - we've simply topped off via power outlets provided on the train or plane we're on. The single speaker is a bit annoying too - not so much because it's a single speaker in a $1k phone, but because it's just not very loud! Both of us carry our phones 'naked', so it's not like a case is muffling the sound either - it's just a weak-a$$ thing and simply holding the phone the way you normally hold a phone causes muffling. Pretty pathetic. Luckily, we both use AirPod Pros (just got the 3rd generation and its noise cancellation is a huge improvement over the already pretty good AirPod Pro 2 they replace), so we rarely need the speaker.

If nothing changes in the iPhone Air in its next generation, we will probably move back to the iPhone 18 Pro Max next year - just because its camera is too big a step backwards for us. Doubly so if Apple finds a way to make the 18 Pro Max a bit lighter and thinner. Conversely, if Apple somehow manages to give me a real optical zoom (3x or better) in the next Air, we'll stick with this phone. It is soooo nice to hold and look at.

My non tech friend got one and returned it in a week, siting the camera, usb 2 and battery anxiety. That's a normal non tech person. If Apple dropped the price to match the limitations they might have a huge hit on their hands.

I can understand a non-tech person wanting the better cameras. But USB-2? Really? I'd venture to say someone who cares that much about wired transfer speeds isn't non-tech.

I’m fine with the fewer features. Two weeks later, I still love the how it looks and feels. The price tag was a bit hard to swallow, but I don’t think I regret the purchase at all.

It's too bad it might end up like the iPhone mini though if the demand isn't there for it.

The phone is significantly thinner than both other models, and way lighter compared to the Pro. Not to mention it's built like a tank.

The hilariousness watching this forum literally become so disoriented as Air refused to bend and shatter snd break. Funny how durability isn't one of the pros of the Air that's listed in addition to thinness and lightness. Not to mention the C1X chip, which is amazing for low signal
What? The difference between the iPhone Air and the iPhone 17:

Thickness is 2.4mm
Weight: 12 grams

This is nothing, basically imperceptible to any human over 5 years old.

Except the battery life isn’t poor. It’s better than my 15 Pro it replaced (even when new) and equal to the 16 Pro. And nearly equal to the iPhone 17. It’s just not as long as the 17 Pro.

The wifi 7 issue isn’t unique to the Air, though. Any Apple devices with the same N1 chip will have that limitation.

Not sure too thin to hold is a thing (not for me), but disappears in pocket like no other iPhone has.

The modem is fast — just missing mm wave which only matters in select locations.

I think the main issue with the Air is price. Too close to the Pro’s price.
Agreed. $100 more gets you a screen only .2 smaller, 3 cameras, great battery life.

Go the other direction - to the regular iPhone 17 - and you lose the telephoto lens and a little bit of speed. It’s a fantastic model this year.

Faced with two great options either side of the air, you’d have to really value the thinness and cool factor above everything.

And evidently most people do not.

did you hold one?

I did on day one in the Apple Store in Zurich.

I never disliked the design and concept of any iPhone like this since 2007.

Huge phablet, too bright, too tall — and the thin edge feels completely awkward in hand due to the massive dimensions of this phone.

And that idiotic, absurd, brainless, degenerated, distorted, tasteless, grotesque, misshapen, pathetic, clumsy, ugly, embarrassing, ridiculous, unaesthetic, incoherent, disfiguring, repulsive, atrocious, meaningless, primitive, miserable, dumb, overblown, design-wise bankrupt, illogical, disturbingly intrusive, unbearable, annoying, misengineered, insanely stupid, cheap-looking and visually offensive camera bump is a crime against customers who like asthethics.

You did actually provide a LOT of cognitive bias with disregard of the facts.

3.) Many tests showed that it has 90% of the standard iPhone 17 battery life and more battery life than the stadnard iPhone 16. What are you on about with "Extremely Poor"

4. & 7.) lack of mmWave does not refer to "inferiority". C1X is as fast if not faster for all the tests conducted. mmWave is a great technology but extremely limited in the real world, your conclusion is a spec sheet read.

5.) ROFL

6.) Same comment as the #4. 320Mhz is an enhancement of the WiFi spec, not a requirement of the spec itself. Devices can only benefit from it with unobstructed view to the router. Also the benefit from the extra bandwidth is noticeable when a lot of devices connected to one router. For normal use in a typical household 320Mhz would not add significant value but increase power draw on the devices connected.

8.) 🤦‍♂️ What year is it?

9.) Again, what year is it that a wired connection is required to transfer large amounts of data, excluding professionals who shoot raw files?

10.) Slower = 1 less GPU core? Sure. Like having a car capable of doing 160mph but it's electronically limited to 140mph. Surely makes no difference while mostly driving 50-100mph on 99% of the roads.

I was interested, but there are two massive dealbreakers for me - no ultra-wide camera (I could live without a zoom lens, but not without ultra-wide) and the abysmal, quiet single speaker. There are other drawbacks too, but these two completely killed my interest in the Air.

That's quite fair. For me I loved using the telephoto camera on the Pro these past several years. That has been a huge drawback, but the size + feel of the device outweighed it (for me personally).

But overall, I like how we have more choices. Making this thin and light iPhone Air allowed Apple to really push the Pro to a new level (thicker, larger battery, cooling, etc). Everyone will have their own preference, and I love what they've done with the Pro, but the hate the Air gets is just odd.
