so the iPhone is sold for other carriers in other countrys?
I always assumed the AT&T exclusive contract was applied to AT&T itself, as a company in general- not just in the U.S.

weird.

So why do 3 of the 5 networks plus one virtual network in the UK (O2, Orange, Vodafone, Tesco) have the iPhone?

The cost difference to Apple from putting in 8 GB instead of 16 GBs is less than $20. So like many others here, I'll ask what's the point?

Help me out here, why are people interested in an 8GB 3GS? Wouldn't a 16GB work out well enough as a "low-end" 3GS?

I'm really not trying to start a fight, I'm just wondering what's the appeal? Thank you:)

Well, I have a 16gb iPhone, but I don't even use 8gb. Most of the people I know who use the iPhone don't even use the 8gb either, so its a waste, really. Next time round I will get an 8gb if the option is there.

Plus, it allows the network providers to make the iPhone seem cheaper. If the 8gb is £50 and the 16gb is £80, they can say "from £50!" rather than "from £80!".

FAIL.....FAIL....FAIL......all we need now is an EPIC FAIL picture of a cat.:p

The iPhone was launched with "exclusive" deals for each national carrier (FSVO).

Which saw AT&T in the US, O2 (formerly BT Cellnet) in the UK, Orange in France and T-Mobile in Germany as the main carriers.

Clearly that deal was for a certain period and varied by territory.

With T-Mobile and Orange merging, it looks like all of the UK carriers (of any importance) will be offering the iPhone. I've pre-ordered a 32GB 3GS on Vodafone since they're doing a pretty decent package and I've been with them since '97, though I prefer T-Mobile for data use (and have a G1 - until the iPhone has a hardware keyboard, which I suspect is "never", I will never be able to have just one device; I already have an original 8GB iPhone and can't get on with the on-screen type).

AMMAGAWD! There are other countries outside of the US? Blasphemy!

Damn some of you ignorant guys..

Price perhaps ?

well chances are that they would storage up the devices in the summer so the 16GB would be $99 or $149 anyway.

as for how this could happen. since the part number and serial on it, I would imagine those box bottoms are printed on demand off some kind of template. someone cued up the wrong one, didn't notice. probably didn't notice grabbing the wrong box top or they were all that were in stock at the time. perhaps they are printed on demand also. linked to the template.

to use a box as proof positive is a tad weak. not saying they wouldn't do it, but I'm not holding my breath on this bit of proof

WTF guys!? This is news to you????

I knew about this about a month or so ago. We have it here in Thailand. Yeah, first time I saw it I was like "wtf... I didn't know Apple had an 8GB iPhone 3gs" but apparently, they slipped one in.

Look at the bottom-right ad. 8GB iPhone 3gs. This is the same carrier/company that I got my 32GB iPhone 3Gs from. So no bull here. No big deal either.

Happy 2010 everyone.

BTW... THB 18,900 is US$567.40 or EU393.86. This is a carrier-unlocked phone with all the stuff open though -- that means you can use it on any carrier you want - no need to worry about having to use UltraSnow or any of those tools. The current models however need to be tethered to a computer to boot jailbroken though. Oh, and you have Internet Tethering and MMS enabled too... just some of the things we take for granted here in the Land of Smiley Thais.

OOOOhhhh wait...

If you click on the link it gives you a page that says it's just the 3G (not 3GS).

Typical Thai Typos.

iphone WITHOUT data plan... please?

I wouldn't mind paying $500 for an iphone, if I could use it as a phone, and ditch the mandatory monthly data plan that I don't need, nor want! You know, make it like an ipod/phone.... rather than an ipod/phone/AT&T payment plan.
