Earlier this year, several pieces of evidence from the internal computer sales system for Canada's Rogers Wireless suggested that an 8 GB iPhone 3GS was in the works, although Rogers representatives claimed that the listing was an error and no such model has appeared in the months since. Early last month, a new report claiming that AT&T was looking to deploy an 8 GB version of the iPhone 3GS before Christmas also surfaced, but again nothing materialized.

A new report [Google translation] from German forum apfeltalk.de, discovered by Electronista, has revived the speculation with news of a user who ordered a refurbished 8 GB iPhone 3G and received the proper model but in a box carrying a label reading "iPhone 3GS v2.2, 8GB".
After buying a refurbished 8GB iPhone 3G, the Hamburg resident received the promised device but with a label on the back pointing to an "iPhone 3GS v2.2, 8GB." The model (A1241) and part number (MB490DN/A) point to the older model, but "iPhone 3GS" appears elsewhere on the packaging and implies that its mention wasn't a mistake.
It is unclear why such a label mentioning "iPhone 3GS" in several locations would appear at this time on a plain white box used for refurbished iPhones.

Help me out here, why are people interested in an 8GB 3GS? Wouldn't a 16GB work out well enough as a "low-end" 3GS?

I'm really not trying to start a fight, I'm just wondering what's the appeal? Thank you:)

I would assume, like some others, that they will probably discontinue the 3G, and if they sell the 8GB, it'll be to lower the entry price point. It should help attract some buyers of limited means -- often in that set, people worry about their budget month to month, and while the handset price may be relatively irrelevant in comparison to the monthly fee for me, it might be a very different case for some people. Also there are a number of countries where Apple markets the iPhone where the handset price is prohibitive because of average incomes -- in developing markets, dropping the price by adding an 8GB model might be a real way to allow more people to get on board.

At some point the back stock of 3G phones (and/or procs) is going to finally be depleted. Instead of having to to run 2 production lines it's probably cheaper for Apple to manufacture all 3GS phones and just change the RAM in them.

Apple will of course spin it as look at this great deal we're giving you, but in reality it's just cheaper for them to not have to make two separate phones.

I can't be bothered to sort through my iTunes for music to put onto my phone and secondly; I don't actually listen to music much these days when I am not at my computer so I don't even need 8GB TBH...

They are probably preparing for the new iPhone - so instead of running three production lines, it'll just be two again: 3GS and the iPhone v4 model.

...

I have an 8gb iphone 3g and I have tons of space left over. I don't see any reason why they would need to continue bumping space at this point unless they bring hardware that can run more advanced software, but even then people are buying 60gb SSDs for their computer so surely they dont need anywhere close to that much space on a phone.

Did you ever think that some people have actual music libraries with a lot of music and 8GB can't even store half of it? bumping space is ALWAYS good.

My mom wants an iPhone. She doesn't need 16GB. I won't let her get a 3G without video recording and the faster processor. So we wait until the mythical 8GB 3GS makes an appearance.

Your move, Apple.

Most people getting the iPhone don't really care about the the phone price.

But some people do. It would be silly to exclude them by not offering a 3GS model at the $99 price point.

I'm still curious about the T-Mobile label in the left corner. 8G for T-Mobile service?

Control, Control, Control

I'd rather see a 3GS with an SDHC slot myself with the choice to upgrade capacity as I went.

the 2 main reasons that we will not see a SDHC card slot on an iPhone or iPod Touch is that then they would not be as thin & pretty for one. But the real main reason is that then Apple would give you too much control over what is on your iPhone/iPod Touch. Now they can control by using the OS & making it more difficult to keep your purchased programs (which they already totally control) under their control.

A memory card slot would make many things much easier to do. I'd like to see 128 GB hard wired with a card slot available for more storage for time when we need more movies, music, photos, data or whatever it is we want to use OUR device for. I've been running my Intel Mac Pro with 11-13 TB of drive space turned on, why wouldn't I want more selectable storage on my iPhone/iPod Touch?

Your mom probably also doesn't need a computer with an 80GB or more hard drive but she still has it. Just get her a 3GS. Progress is progress
