Come on you are all a smart bunch of people. You do realize that RIM is not in the same market as the iPhone and Android. They are geared more towards enterprises who utilize BES.

Enterprises are increasingly adopting the iPhone due to its advanced business features in iOS 4...RIM is actually losing a lot of appeal, as its third party-based "secure" and "encrypted" services are more and more under the scrutiny of governments. BB's dependability is a great myth.

I like it. I want one.

Not to replace my iPhone 4 or anything, but it looks like a good communications tool. I like Blackberry's as they are (and for WHAT they are) but this seems like a nice step up from the Bold/Storm line.

Mac Rumors or just Rumors

Is MacRumors now Engadget? Seriously, what does this have to do with Apple or the magical iPhone 4?

It has just about as much as the iPhone has to do with the Mac. Maybe this web site should change its name from Mac Rumors to just Romors?

Some people HAVE to carry a Blackberry because of work, especially those who travel and still have the old unlimited international data plans on their account, this is a great step up for them. I know people that wish their bold had a bigger screen, with a touch interface on top of a physical keyboard, for them this is gonna be very good.

As far as the processor, no its not a 1GHz Snapdragon or Hummingbird, but lets not forget that the processor on the iPhone 3GS is said to be running at 600MHz, with only 256MB of Ram, and quite honestly, the speed difference between the 3GS and the iP4 isnt all that noticeable. The processor on the Torch is said to be running at 624MHz with 512MB or Ram, double what the 3GS has, so if RIM managed to optimized their OS reasonably well, the phone could have a surprisingly "fluid" experience. I'm waiting until I use one to before I come to any conclusions.

The problem I had with BlackBerry is the crippling OS. RIM can redesign their hardware all they want, but the OS should be their main focus. I’m sure OS6 will be just as clunky as the previous iterations.

In what way is RIM corrupting peoples minds to buy Blackberrys instead of iPhones?

It's not the phones by any stretch, it's (parts of) the ecosystem. BES offers great "enterprise" features for businesses who want security & control. I've heard teens like them because Blackberry Messenger lets them IM friends' phones over their unlimited data plan, so they're not paying for SMS.

Cool story, bro.

Yeah and iOS is totally secure. Especially since it allows Jailbreaking via a Webpage which is actually utilizing a Font security hole that was originally in OSX that apple... ah you get the point.

BES will allow the Blackberry to remain a player in the Enterprise. Until Apple releases a centralized management tool for the iPhone it will always be something Corporate Security teams shutter at. Just because a CEO who likes new toys says his company is going to adopt something, doesn't mean the Info Security won't do its due diligence to squash it.

Here's where you are right and here's where you are wrong.

The phone itself is nothing to marvel. And personally - I hate sliding phones - they are horrible to operate. The phone while in competition with the iPhone is also not in competition. Let me explain on where some of you are wrong in your thinking.

If a user is deciding between and iPhone and a Blackberry - no doubt the iPhone would win. But there's an assumption there. That the user is comparing.

As someone who went through several blackberries before switching to the iPhone 3GS (yes - even with the iPhone out - I didn't switch for a few years) I can say that it's very exciting when Blackberry releases a new phone and OS improvements. Just like it is when you have an iPhone and see new OS improvements and new features on a phone.

So if you're in the blackberry camp (or if you're forced to be because your company's IT is blackberry not iPhone supportive) then this phone is the next great thing.

Say what to you want. In comparison - perhaps it "fails." - but in the other world of Blackberries - it's a great phone no doubt.

My .02

At face value, looks great! RIM needs to create an evolved BlackBerry, drawing from features that make a BlackBerry great to business and BlackBerry fans, and other evolutions from the iOS/Android side which can be worked in appropriately or out of necessity (i.e. a web browser that isn't trash). Pending a review, bravo!

I suspect this mentality will be the source of much criticism against this phone, but it makes one horrible assumption: that the 'user' mentioned above is a generic factor. There are businesses and users who very much like aspects of the BlackBerry, and also want something which is primarily designed as a communication device. BlackBerry has a different demographic and to ignore this would be to toss themselves to the wolves.

well o2 in the uk contacted me to let me know that they had a fantastic deal on these phones. When asked if i could get an iphone 4 i was informed we can not at present sell the iphone 4 they have been taken out of the sales system till futher notice. But they did want to try and sell me one of these things NO THANKS

I’ve never been a BB sorta guy although it is an improvement. Personally, I think sliders and mechanical keyboards are fast becoming obsolete.

I agree. I didn't like the iOS keyboard much but the EVO keyboard is great. I think its just the way SENSEUI has the keys laid out.

This is RIM's swansong, worry not...what an irrelevant piece of kit.

BLACKBERRY IS DEAD. AND SO IS ANDROID.

Facts: More people use Blackberries in the U.S. than any other smartphone platform. More people bought Blackberries in the last 6 months than any other smartphone platform.

Source: Nielsen data cited just yesterday on Macrumors.

Conclusion: You're ignorant.

My company just dropped all of their Blackberries and AT&T for Droid Erises and Verizon.

What's Blackberries planned retention rate? ;)

I dunno... I think RIM should stick to where it's good and respond more to it's customers needs and not make Quasimodo-like iphone/blackberry spinoffs.

This phone, apart from the OS, doesn't seem to offer anything that would win over the hardened iPhone, Blackberry, or Android user.

I do not see it effecting iPhone or Android fans but of the blackberry fans it is something that a lot really like.
They get the big touch screen but still have the keyboard they know and love. Problem with the storm was it felt so Anti-Blackberry and the keyboard just never seem to work right. But in this one they see the keyboard part so they bet the best of both words. The really kicker is how will the new web kit browser work and will blackberry finally have a good native browser on it.

RIM will stay in the enterprise until it is slowly but surely uprooted by iOS and others. Android isn't quite a threat yet because their enterprise features suck, but iOS has done a pretty good job and will get better!

RIM is becoming more and more irrelevant! Their days of glory are over! Too little too late RIM!

RIM's purported "encryption" is actually a myth, subject to a company's cloud "reliability" and practices that are currently banned or under scrutiny by many countries...or have you missed the news lately?

As for the PDF hole, security issues will always exist - that doesn't mean the iPhone is less secure or less "enterprise-friendly" than other phones, as Forrester Research has just acknowledged.
