You mean the counties that want to spy on their people and they are wanting to ban blackberries because they can not crack the security on it.
Those counties have demand that RIM give them a way to read messages sent threw BBM and the email.

Sum it up the counties wanting to or are banning blackberries are the same ones who want to spy on their own people and well they cann't with with blackberry.

Blackberry is considered military grade. Iphone is not.

And how is that different from your democratic country's need to block "terrorist" activities through NSA/CIA requests and not-so-disguised spying on personal communications? Or are the US the only country allowed to snoop against security threats?

By the way, RIM has ALREADY accepted India's requests in order to stay in business...don't be naive.

Hey now, LP's are where it's at. I'd much rather listen to music on my record player than my computer. And no. I'm not old.

Agreed - say all you want (younger generation) about electronic media. But experts know that you get a far richer range with a record vs. mp3.

Torch? How innovative.

Guess their target customers are stupid enough to confuse
"Torch" with a certain Apple product with
"Touch" as part of its name.

Yes, a country that is one of the closest allies of the US of A, not to mention the main hub of foreign investment and financial services in the Middle East.

Besides, did you voluntarily forget to mention India or was it just an oversight?

The UAE one of Americas closest allies???? Qatar and Saudi Arabia are the closest Middle Eastern Allies of the United States. I'd say globally England, Japan, Korea, Canada, and Australia. The UAE's foreign investment may be skidding to a halt pretty soon due to the mismanagement of there money.

I didn't forget India I think its pretty self explanatory that India has had a history of human rights violations (as well as the UAE. Just because they are rich doesn't mean they aren't Human Rights Violators.)

They released code to India to monitor BES servers.

Weird price point for RIM, imo. $199 on AT&T where the iPhone 4 and the Samsung Captivate reside.

It would've been interesting if priced at $149. For people who are avid BB users, this is a no-brainer to upgrade to but for new customers looking at all three phones side-by-side... I think they'd have a better shot at eating into the above two sales by pricing it lower initially.

I'm not talking about corporate customers w/ no choice. I'm talking your run-of-the-mill/I want a new phone with cool features! consumers. I'd think these people would choose the Captivate or iPhone over the Torch.

Here's where you are right and here's where you are wrong.

The phone itself is nothing to marvel. And personally - I hate sliding phones - they are horrible to operate. The phone while in competition with the iPhone is also not in competition. Let me explain on where some of you are wrong in your thinking.

If a user is deciding between and iPhone and a Blackberry - no doubt the iPhone would win. But there's an assumption there. That the user is comparing.

As someone who went through several blackberries before switching to the iPhone 3GS (yes - even with the iPhone out - I didn't switch for a few years) I can say that it's very exciting when Blackberry releases a new phone and OS improvements. Just like it is when you have an iPhone and see new OS improvements and new features on a phone.

So if you're in the blackberry camp (or if you're forced to be because your company's IT is blackberry not iPhone supportive) then this phone is the next great thing.

Say what to you want. In comparison - perhaps it "fails." - but in the other world of Blackberries - it's a great phone no doubt.

My .02

how do you come to that ridiculous conclusion?

lots of people have choices and lots still choose berries.

Depends whether Zombie Farm or having a useful piece of hardware is *your*
priority.

Again - you're making the assumption a choice is involved. The end-user here might not have a choice for anything but a blackberry.

Is there some reason this is on the front page of MacRumors? I hope this sight doesn't turn into another Engadget and post about every damn phone that comes along. Thank god the company I work for dumped RIM when they lost the injunction brought against them a few years back.

Come on you are all a smart bunch of people. You do realize that RIM is not in the same market as the iPhone and Android. They are geared more towards enterprises who utilize BES.

Do you really think that BES is set in stone? RIM can't sit on their hands and release same-same mediocrity like this forever.

I already edited my last part to clarify that. Most phone buyers aren't in that position though so... I doubt there are more end-users who have no choice over a BB versus people who just want to upgrade to a new phone.

I think this phone will sell as all other BBs have. I think RIM is satisfied with where they are and their market share. I don't really see them changing anything significant. I think having a better resolution would put this over the top but from my understanding it's the same as the Tour (or Storm?).

Ridiculous how? I wasn't insulting the blackberry or iPhone.

People here want to say that the iPhone blows this phone away and anyone would naturally choose the iPhone based on what it offers.

My point is simply that premise is false. Because (on top of people that love blackberries) - there are those that work for companies where they only get to choose a blackberry. So there's no comparison going on other than between one blackberry and the next.

And you're right - people choose phones for all sorts of reasons. I didn't switch to an iPhone before the 3GS because I could not STAND not having a physical keyboard. Hated the touch typing. Not a big fan of it now - but my usage is also different now than a few years back.

Human rights violator? Don't forget to include your own nation there, please.

OFF-TOPIC OVER.

Yeah and iOS is totally secure. Especially since it allows Jailbreaking via a Webpage which is actually utilizing a Font security hole that was originally in OSX that apple... ah you get the point.

Oh stop with the hyperbole already. How stupid do you think we are? As if you couldn't hack any smartphone including Blackberries if you find a buffer overflow. This will be fixed with the next OS release and there you go.

Did I hit a sensitive spot with the comment?

You're from Switzerland right? The same country that houses convicted pedophiles.

Some one who does not understand hardware keyboards at all.

While the res is kind of low the OS from waht I have seen is pretty promising and still holds true to the core of the OS.

As for the hardware keyboards RIM blackberry are the the gold standard when it comes to them. Touch screen keyboards have a lot of draw backs. One is ZERO tactile feel so you more need to look at the when typing on it. Also when the keyboard is in used on a touch screen it eats up a LOT of screen space to be used. The slider hardware gives the advantage of keeping all the screen space and still having a keyboard.

The problem with a hardware keyboard is that it really limits the audience of the phone. One of the reasons the iPhone has caught fire globally is its *universal* keyboard. Doesn't matter what language you want your iPhone in; it probably supports it.
