Why not just wait? Don't you think that would make a lot more sense?

Yes, I wanted to wait but I need it now for school and the current one has everything I need for running Logic also. I believe I won't be dissapointed anyway since it is still a very good machine.

Until the technology is mature, it's not going to be in an Apple product. Size (thickness), battery life, and a pending specification revision all point to a delay (and an initial introduction in the mac pro before laptops).

Agreed. As a result I do not see Apple incorporating Blu Ray into their product line anytime soon. When they do, it will be in the Mac Pro, and I think it will be sometime after that until we see it filter thorugh the rest of the product line. Again, Steve Jobs sees absolutely no use for Blu Ray for content delivery, so that will lessen the urgency in his mind for incorporating the technology.

The display aspect ratio changed from 1.5:1 to 1.6:1, reducing the resolution by 60 vertical pixels.

Back when the 15" PowerBook G4 had a 1280*x resolution, it was 1280*854 (1.499:1 ) instead of 1280*800.

So not only did they remove more pixels per inch, they also reduced the total number of pixels even when the resolution was set at the same pixel density! I'm sure that they did that because the lower res screen has some benefits in lighter weight or smaller size or something like that, but come on! It's not like 1440 x 960 was even cutting edge at the time of the last gen powerbook, that res was only just on par with most MS Windows laptops at the time. And now 2 years later, 1280 x 8xx is just insulting for an over $2000 laptop.

Crazy.

EDIT:

wait, Apple's MBP spec page and the Apple store's laptop specs page say the screen is "15.4-inch (viewable) widescreen LED 1440 x 900 pixels"

http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/specs.html

iMathematician, I just did some research and found out your info is out of date. When the powerbook first became the MBP, they lowered the screen res. But at some point they added 1440 x 9xx back to the MBP.

With all the talk of Blu-ray.

1. PLayer Still not in Wal-Mart
2. Only 1 player in target and its being discontinued
3. You have to go to a big box store like HHGreg, Best Buy, etc.
4. only a handful of movies out on blu-ray
5. blu-ray drives for computers (especially blu-ray burners - which is what most people want) is expensive [but coming down in price].
6. PC's always get the first of everything, and hence the bugginess - they usually adopt a way too early.

to me, I say blu-ray in a year or so. DVD players are like $20 now, and they are still flying off the shelf and look pretty dang good on an HD-LCD TV. Pus you should see the people scarfing up their favorite movie on DVD at wal-mart when they hit the 2/$11 bin. We just bought 6 more movies last night.

If the rumor were true, my parents would purchase it as soon as it was released. They don't need a monitor (iMac) or want to spend the money on the MP and don't need another notebook. (My dad purchased a MBP last Christmas.) A headless Mac tower would be perfect for them.

Me too :D I'm in the market for a new mid-range PC - I have a high end workstation (which was considerably cheaper than a Mac pro) and a laptop, I just need an every day basic machine - I already have monitor etc. I'm hoping they either update the mini or release something else to fit in between. If not, I'll be buying another PC :(

The 1.5:1 display was 15.2" and the 1.6:1 display was 15.4". So it got bigger for less resolution.

I was referring to the MacBook's (not MacBook Pro's) resolution being less than 1440*900. The 15" PowerBook / MacBook Pro's resolution went 1280*854 -> 1440*960 -> 1440*900.

Ah, I see. I misunderstood. I hate the naming of the MacX vs. MacX Pro, it constantly leads to misunderstandings.

I just ordered a new mbp today but for some reason they say on apple.com that I will get it on September 9 or 10 even though it is supposed to be finished to ship on the 29:th of August...
Is this just a coincidence?
or will they send me a newer model than the one I ordered?
I guess it's just wishfull thinking...

Well, that's a good thing then. You're in a special 'zone'. You get it, you use it lightly and you see what the new MacBook Pro is like and if you like that better, it's w/in the 30 days of the purchase of the last gen. and the release of a new gen. If you don't mind the restocking fee (10%), you can go for the new one or just keep the one you got... which isn't all that out of date. Nice! :)

I really hope the mini finally gets an update especially since it's been so long since it has had one. I do hope however that the MB and MBP get updated too.

so everything is due for an upgrade?

What if that is because they need to make a fundamental change? Like adding Blu-Ray across the entire product line, and moving screen resolutions to 16x9 aspect ratio, and making HDMI the primary video out? All of the machines maybe even getting new GPU hardware to offload the h.264 processing from the CPU?

updates would include:

MacBook - Blu-Ray reader, 720p screens, HDMI out
MacBookPro - Blu-Ray writer, 1080p screens (16 & 18 inch), HDMI out
Mac Mini - this becomes an awesome set-top box with Blu-Ray reader.
iMac - Blu-Ray reader/writer options, 1080p screens and HDMI out
Mac Pro - Blu-Ray writer, and HDMI out

Even the ipod/ itunes rumors may be true as they switch the format of most videos in the itunes store to HD. Granted all the SD stuff would have to remain with 'bars' on the sides.

Apple cannot ignore Blu-Ray as many suggest, Steve Jobs would know this sitting on Disney's board. Blu-Ray is here to stay, better get on board.

By the way, the transition to 16x9 screens would make for the perfect time to update the cases of the laptops, because there would be new geometry to the size of the cases.

All this I like and makes sense. :apple:

If they use Blu-ray and the format fails and years go by before the next revision, it will be known as the computer w/ essentially a Betamax drive built into it. But if it succeeds and years go by before the next revision, then they're behind the curve.

Blu-ray LOL LOL LOL what a joke

Yeah. I wish people would see the whole picture when it comes to it being able to have a large data storage format possibilities. And even if movies future is downloads by the Internet (which I don't think it is), I'd say a majority of people STILL want a hardcopy as a backup (besides the ease of transporting and sharing it).

As exhaustively said before by many, 99.99% of the market will NEVER open a computer case, let alone add a PCI board, which apart from hardcore gamers who need new bragging rights every quarter, is simply unknown and useless to any normal user. Apple is the ONLY company realizing that, and that's why it's so successful, growing more than double the ordinary IT sector.

I've never considered adding anything more than RAM, an external drive or assorted USB or FW devices...just as pretty much anyone out there...add-on boards had only two roles in the Mac's history...either to run PC software or to run Apple II software in the Mac LC...

Shrug... I don't want an xMac as much as I want an iMac that I can replace my TV with. The only barrier is lack of digital cable and cable card support. My wife has already agreed that a 24" iMac would be a great replacement for our bedroom TV. I wish Elgato would hurry up and get the eyetv some cable card support. I don't want to buy a Vista box to do it...

Although I can see some people's point. If Apple is ever going to remove MS from the computer industry they will have to make an xMac at some point.

No, it's not a joke. Even if it fails as a movie format, it's pretty much certain that it's going to succeed as a burnable data format.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc#Blu-ray_Disc_recordable

Maybe, but here is my issue.

CD-R burns fine
DVD+-RW, many people on Dell laptops posted about issues (I was not the only one) of not burning DVD's properly.

Double Layer to get 8gb on one disk - only 2 out of 5 I tried on my macbook burns correctly, all other formats up through DVD-R, DVD+R I do not have a problem with. Double Layer, I get an error that the CPU lost connection with the drive.

I want blu-ray for data storage capacity, but not if it is buggy.

I only see blu-ray recording disks at target and there is usually only 1 or 2 packages on the shelf, so goes to show the demand is not there for it yet.

I agree, sometimes I think we still live in a floppy disk world. :(

If Apple is ever going to remove MS from the computer industry they will have to make an xMac at some point.

If Apple is every going to remove MS:

1. TV Card support - for those who want to have TV on their computer (why Would not know, except to record shows with)...

2. Much work on iwork to be more like office, and come out with a real MS-publisher style app. So far with iwork and bento, it is like MS-works on steriods.

3. touch-screen/tablet.

4. Lower the price of the macbooks or come out with a sub-macbook that is the same as the air - just lower the price to $700.

5. More USB ports. Seriously, I have a laptop cooler that has a 4 port USB hub. - I usually have more than 2 things plugged in.

6. ENTERPRISE PRODUCTS. Now there is a stumbling block, some places i ran into is so much in the MS mind-set they will not even allow a Linux server to just hold files. So instead of buying a $1000 server and put linux on it, they buy a $2000 server, and then spend the money for Windows 2003 server and wonder why it is slow and they have to reboot often.

7. More 3rd party software designers to take mac seriously.

But seriously folks, if people would just remove themselves from the MS-mindset. The only thing I used Windows for is specialized apps for work, .NET and MS-SQL (only because we support hospitals that run SQL and they already have Windows servers). Other than that. at home. I just use it for some apps I have not converted to apple yet. I am about to dump 3 more in about a week....

I agree, sometimes I think we still live in a floppy disk world. :(

Would you believe the Dell that my work supplied me with still has a floppy?

I was in OfficeMax the other day and saw they still sold ZIP disks.

I have not used a floppy in 3 years, nor have I used an iomega zip drive in 5 years.

I agree 1 million %. My wife has approved the purchase of the 24" iMac for bedroom TV replacement. But I can't do it till there is cable card support.
