The video card in the Apple TV is only "native" at 720p but as Peace said, is able to upscale the video. Personally, I hardly see a difference in output quality on my 1080p Panny plasma and 1080p would be impractical to stream for movie rentals. I can't see why Apple would produce a simple hardware tweak to appease the typical Best Buy customer who doesn't know better anyway. If Apple does 1080p, it would be new hardware and iTunes downloads would support it as well. The latter won't happen for awhile.

Ok, I stand corrected: The Apple teevee says 1080i - 50 Mhz and the teevee (a cheap Philips) says just '1080'.

Still, I can do 1080i, why can't you? Firmware is 2.1.

Here's the specs for the ATV from Apple's website :

Video
Video formats supported:
H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store):
• up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution 1280x720 @ 24fps, 960x540 @ 30fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
• iTunes Store purchased video, 320x240, 640x480, 720 by 480 pixels (anamorphic), or high-definition 720p
MPEG 4:
• up to 3 Mbps, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution 720x432 @ 30 fps) in .m4v,

Your MacBook predictions are plausible.
Your MacBook Pro stuff was believable until USER-REPLACEABLE HARD DRIVE...

That was utter crystal ball talking.

Why is it unbelievable? The MacBooks have user-replaceable hard drives already, why not the MBPs? I would thing the MBPs would need user replaceable hard drives before the Macbooks would, on account of graphics artists, video editors, photographers need a lot more space.

They better update the mini. Dell's Studio Hybrid destroys it in every area except looks. More importantly Dell has a great price point for a machine that can do much more than the mini can in its current form.

The mini needs wireless-n, HDMI, a decent GPU, and full support for the Al keyboard (it still doesn't see the Al KB until after the OS loads, so you can't boot from a CD or BootCamp without manually changing the startup drive).

Well, yeah the DELL hybrid studio does have a lot, but..
Ok I won't go through those posts again.

Do have one question about the alu keyboard. I bought my wife a mini a couple of weeks ago (we needed one now and could not wait anymore). I opted to get the new keyboard, but have a regular 2-button USB mouse plugged into it, due to the mini only habing 4 USB ports (all are taken - keyboard, printer, external backup drive, ipod connector). Every so often (mostly in the older AOL client); the keyboard stops working or she loses the space bar. She has to go to another window and come back to be able to type again.

My questions are:

1. alu keyboard issue? i have all the firmware updates that were available.
2. NON-APPLE (Logitech) USB mouse plugged into the keyboard's USB port giving problems? - kinda doubt that as I used the mouse for 2 years and it works fine on my macbook and does not interfare with anything.
3. AOL issue? - oh sure everyone will point to that.

I am looking for a serious answer here.

Another thing I noted, but with my macbook... now that my Windows machines are dead or decomissioned, I use it more and more. Sadly, I am starting to notice to things:

1. Some apps are getting sluggish, and it takes a little longer to boot up. What must I do to keep my mac happy.. I think crossover is what screwed it, my problems started happening when I uninstalled the trial version.

2. Starting to notice a small, annoying but not major issue of the keyboard missing letters randomly when I type. I say not major - as my typing is not the best anyway (I type faster than my brain can think); plus I have turned on inkwell and handwriting recognition since I now have a Wacom Bamboo (man I cannot wait till apple releases an affordable tablet with the power of a macbook (or even a lower power one like the Air)).

Does anyone have any suggestions for those? My machine was bought new in April, and only last month I finally converted everything off Windows and my macbook is my main machine (except for my work PC).

Isn't...

That's called upscaling.

It's not true 1080P

Try to transfer a true 1080P video to the ATV and see what happens.

Isn't it called 'upconverting' but that's besides the point.

I like the settings that it's currently at. It works for me. I do notice that the video seems to be stretched a little at times but this Philips teevee plays tricks sometimes too and jumps from one resolution to another apparently deciding on what's best for what's on the screen. I can't change it to stay at a certain resolution because, unlike y'all, I can't afford Blu-Ray...

BTW: Wouldn't Blu-Ray on a mobile platform be a major headache with the potential motion of the unit while it's reading the disc? Is that a case of being careful what you wish for? I remember trying to write DVD's on my peecee notebook. Yeah. Not fondly either. ANY motion and the disc was toast... Wouldn't trying to watch a Blu-Ray disc on a mobile computer be a sad joke? Like on a plane or a train?

Pricing in the Apple UK Refurb store is suggesting an iPod refresh. Current products are normally discounted by 13%. The iPod Classic, Nano and Touch are discounted by 22% to 35% which is discontinued product discounting. In comparison the iPod shuffle is at 14%.

The Mac prices don't show much - no MacBook's listed and they've been discounting MacBook Pro's all over the place for ages.

Hmmmm...

Ok, Microsoft 2-button mouse and older style Apple keyboard and I've been having issue with to many letters, not missing letters...

It all started about a month ago after the update that was supposed to fix the issue with extra letters during typing. It's not a huge issue for me (thank god that Firefox has spell checking).

I hate the layout of the new keyboard although I do like the *size* of the wireless keyboard. I have a system in a rack that it works perfectly with. Now if only they made a slim wired keyboard! I'd buy at least 2 right now.

I haven't had many other issues using other brand mice. Never tried a different brand keyboard. I have had issues with USB hubs. Especially the mac taking longer to startup which I gather is a symptom of using a USB hub. If they only put like 8 USB ports on the new systems, then I'd be happy. Heck, my peecee notebook has 4 usb AND a firewire port. MBP? 2 and one. Boo!

Now that practically EVERYTHING is USB, not having more is ridiculous... The port on the keyboard doesn't count (Problems would probably go away if you stopped using the keyboard USB port). It's only USB 400 and not all that usable... (Firewire on a display? They DO need an update)

Try a repair permissions too...

I am really hoping they come out with a new redesign of the MBP, but I am also dreading how ridiculous the lines will be at the apple store. Is it usually as bad as when they released the iphone? I waited 3.5 hours in line for my iphone 3g. I can see the Apple stores here in NYC being crowded with mostly people looking at the new products and not buying them. Any thoughts?

May I suggest not waiting in line then? Then you might not feel slighted. Otherwise you can head over to Best Buy.

good to hear. this is only speculation though. but again, remember apple didn't budge to mention anything when they were completely sold out of iphones before the 3g launch. next tuesday should come soon enough.

True. I forgot that Best Buy carried Apple. :)

Yep, if you want to wait in line, head to best buy. Horrible service, slow slow slow lines.

But remember:

iPhone, $400+irrational advance hype = absurd lines
new macs, $2000-3000+announced same day as available = normal lines

check again, see if the missed keystrokes are more often on the bottom row of keys. that's the pattern with my MB. Apple replaced one keyboard, it improved things, but not to a satisfactory level. I can't wait for a new laptop model with a good keyboard. (i'm a fast typist; imho there's something beneath the kb pressing up against it, minimizing the effectiveness of strokes particularly on the bottom row) anyway, i'd be interested to hear where your missed keystrokes most often occur.

I am missing something... what is the definition of 'user replaceable'? You can argue everything Apple has is user replaceable, if the user wants to take it apart and put it together with some hassle. I've replaced hard drives on all my laptops so far, but you have to work at it a little.

Well, it looks like Apple will not be using the Moscone Center for this announcement because CTIA is there September 10 -12. http://www.wirelessit.com/

That means this cannot be a big announcement right? Or could they do it like the iMac's last year and do it in that little room for press only?

Not really, given that the leaked MacBook Pro case resembles the MacBook case.

Sweet! 8-core 4 GHz MacBook Pros! Wait.... that's not in the article? Crap...
Sandy Bridge!!!! :D

If that is indeed yours and mac prediticion for the up comming releases i will settle with an old mbp, The Air keyboard is horrible and i hate the spaces i want the keyboards the current mbp have why change it i really hate mac, WHY SPREAD THE DAMB KEYBOARD OUT
It's not spread more apart. It just looks that way.

Couldn't Apple do the event on September 9?

ITSMF USA Fusion '08 is there September 7~10, but for Moscone North. Apple would probably use Moscone West.

It's also possible that they use Apple Town Hall for the event.

ACDs make sense

Its the season for the new iPods, and I'm SO getting a new iPod Touch for myself and maybe a Nano as a gift. As for Mac related products, new Macbooks / Pros are due for an update, but right now I don't see the window opening for new peripherals like the Cinema Displays, let alone a new product . These must wait a few more months for the glory that is Macworld - when the new year REALLY starts for Apple aficionados :D

New ACDs make sense IF Apple is adding new display output connections (e.g., DisplayPort and/or HDMI). It would make no sense to wait to reveal new ACDs if Apple puts new ports on the MBPs and/or MBs because it would be obvious that an ACD refresh would be soon anyways. Hopefully DVI will no longer be the only connection option on the ACDs.

This isn't that surprising anymore and is getting a little old to see posted every couple of days - another story pointing to product refreshes!
