New Approach?

Didn't Apple say something along the lines of "[wanting] to take a new approach" some time ago? Amid rumors of everything being updated, touch screen macs, and perhaps unlimited iTunes subscription music, could Apple be planning on changing it's approach to computing and music this September?

What do you think? It's just a thought...

I'd been eyeing an iPod Touch as a PDA-type device for a new job, and I hope they are available immediately. I would love to have one for Day 1, and this Sept. 9 day would put that right on target!

A very good thought indeed. You may be onto something. I'll definitely wait and see for what September brings us! :)

I would love to see a mini-tower upgradable headless Mac to fit between the mini and the Pro, but until I see it with my own two eyes I refuse to believe any rumors. ;)

If the rumor were true, my parents would purchase it as soon as it was released. They don't need a monitor (iMac) or want to spend the money on the MP and don't need another notebook. (My dad purchased a MBP last Christmas.) A headless Mac tower would be perfect for them.

Weird that it's still around - I thought it would have gone the way of the eMac by now....

Nope, just bought one a couple of weeks ago. wife needed a machine, I figured it was a good way to introduce her to mac - she also did not want me to spend the money for a macbook for her, since she just uses AOL, iwork, surf the web and one Bible program (Esword).

Twice as high as my current Mac Mini. Throw in a blue ray burner, a big hard disk, plenty of space for additional RAM (4 GB minimum) and a decent graphics card so I can hook up two 22"-24" monitors. Is that too much to ask for?

It would be their best seller in the desktop lineup if it was priced properly.

We all know what happened the last time Apple decided to launch a bunch of things at once. NOT A GOOD IDEA GUYS!

I can't remember the last time Apple did release a lot of devices at once, when was this? a WWDC?

Great to hear that there's still demand for it - hopefully this will mean Apple will update it very soon with more current technology.

And people STILL talk of the fabled headless xMac which ALREADY exists and is called MacMini...that's what's gonna be updated, nothing else...it's amazing how this rotten corpse refuses to die...Apple will NOT launch a generic box anytime soon, fellas...face it and accept it..!

The Mac Mini isn't the xMac for as long as those wanting an xMac can't add PCIe/PCI devices or more than one internal HD to the poor thing. I look forward to an update to the Mini, maybe I could finally replace my server box, with something that requires less power...

As exhaustively said before by many, 99.99% of the market will NEVER open a computer case, let alone add a PCI board, which apart from hardcore gamers who need new bragging rights every quarter, is simply unknown and useless to any normal user. Apple is the ONLY company realizing that, and that's why it's so successful, growing more than double the ordinary IT sector.

I've never considered adding anything more than RAM, an external drive or assorted USB or FW devices...just as pretty much anyone out there...add-on boards had only two roles in the Mac's history...either to run PC software or to run Apple II software in the Mac LC...

so everything is due for an upgrade?

What if that is because they need to make a fundamental change? Like adding Blu-Ray across the entire product line, and moving screen resolutions to 16x9 aspect ratio, and making HDMI the primary video out? All of the machines maybe even getting new GPU hardware to offload the h.264 processing from the CPU?

updates would include:

MacBook - Blu-Ray reader, 720p screens, HDMI out
MacBookPro - Blu-Ray writer, 1080p screens (16 & 18 inch), HDMI out
Mac Mini - this becomes an awesome set-top box with Blu-Ray reader.
iMac - Blu-Ray reader/writer options, 1080p screens and HDMI out
Mac Pro - Blu-Ray writer, and HDMI out

Even the ipod/ itunes rumors may be true as they switch the format of most videos in the itunes store to HD. Granted all the SD stuff would have to remain with 'bars' on the sides.

Apple cannot ignore Blu-Ray as many suggest, Steve Jobs would know this sitting on Disney's board. Blu-Ray is here to stay, better get on board.

By the way, the transition to 16x9 screens would make for the perfect time to update the cases of the laptops, because there would be new geometry to the size of the cases.

Only a demand for me because, she would not let me spend the money for a macbook, for what she would have used it for.

Other than that:

1. People have been buying it as a small server for their living room (front row) and hooking up external drives to it. If anyone knew a good way to store about 100 DVD movies I would probably get another one and do the same. the only thing I know is to rip them and use VLC to play the VOB files individually - but that means when one ends, load another.

2. I did see a couple get sold to an older gentileman (50-60-ish) one other time I was in the store. He bought that, iwork, office, and bento.

But other than that it is usually imac, macbook, or iphone accessories. Only once did I see someone walk out with a mac pro. He spent over $5000 in one purchase......

Steve Jobs has already called Blu Ray an outright failure wrt content delivery so I doubt he is in any rush to incorporate the technology into the Mac product lines other than for HD storage/media etc. Although that is a legitimate reason for bringing in the technology, and we will no doubt see it at some point, it's not like Blu Ray is the be-all and end-all and some people mistakenly believe.

Until the technology is mature, it's not going to be in an Apple product. Size (thickness), battery life, and a pending specification revision all point to a delay (and an initial introduction in the mac pro before laptops). Couple that with Job's attitude, and I just don't see it being added.

A good clue is that there's no blue-ray support in 10.5.5.
