Julien-

They are recording as resting energy in the health app.

Overnight- (my watch was charging during sleep) they recorded at a constant rate of 75.77 cal per hour. This is right in line with my calculated BMR.

While worn the watch is recoding resting calories 1-2 times per minute. The values vary.

My sense is that they are using resting calories as BMR+ some activity. Movement that is less than active burn but above BMR... They are not changing much though- tonight when I have time I can look at the averages per min and report back.

This is and has been a problem metric. I have WiThings and it also reports to Resting Energy all over the map. I thought it was a problem with the WiThings reporting data. However now I see the :apple:Watch (new with wOS 2) is doing the same thing. Obviously this is a problem in the way Apple is calculating the data. Here is a pic of a years worth of data by WiThings (except I started getting :apple:Watch data yesterday).

Again BMR (resting calories) does NOT vary during the day. It is a (relatively) fixed number and doesn't change unless your metrics change. Disregard this data.

What values are folks finding in the Resting Energy card? If it's supposed to be your BMR... mine isn't working correctly. I'm a 6'5" male, 31 years old and at the moment I weigh in at 270 lbs. I work out regularly and yet my Resting Energy is 800-1600 calories a day. My BMR is much higher than that...

Any thoughts?

I don't think it is supposed to be just BMR... I believe they are using resting energy as BMR plus activity that is below the threshold for active calories.

For example as I sit here and type I am burning slightly more than BMR- I am awake/ moving my fingers/ thinking / digesting etc... This said I am not being 'active'

Definition from Apple health: This is an estimate of the energy your body uses each day while minimally active. Additional physical activity requires more energy over and above Resting Energy (see Active Energy).

In that case, it's way off for me. I wish there was some way to troubleshoot/debug it the info.

Spizer511 - mine is spot on and is higher than what you are reporting.

That said - this process changed with OS2. When did you load OS2? After loading OS2 what rate are you seeing resting energy accrue in the health app?

Oh Apple. And the answer just occurred to me while rereading some of your posts @IW1206MT.

To anyone else, for which the Resting Energy didn't work prior to the OS2 update, you need to either ignore the average from your first day of use or simply delete it (Healthkit > Resting Energy Card > Show all Data > swipe left on the oldest day, then delete).

In all likelihood, you've only got a partial day's worth of data from day you installed OS2. As in, it doesn't account for the time in the day prior to when you installed. Which, in the long run won't really matter. But if you're looking for accuracy within the first week(s), this will skew your average.

And as far as calculating BMR? This seems pretty spot on now that I look at the data. Like it was mentioned earlier in this thread it seems to track every-ever few minutes and provide calories burned, with a lump sum provided whenever the watch isn't being worn. This seems to include some variation of Harris Benedict Equation which helps make your BMR more accurate.

Agree 100%... When I updated to os2 resting calories reset to zero for the day. The accrued rate seems spot on to me.

As an aside- I have an AW and a Fitbit One on today. At the moment total calories burned are only 10 calories apart.

I updated to OS2 yesterday morning, and my resting Calories dropped by about 1000 per day.
The odd thing is that I was losing weight at a rate consistent with the old levels.
