I don't think you can use spotify because it needs an internet connection, but you can put MP3's onto the storage of your apple watch and listen via bluetooth headphones, while tracking your run.

Unless you were taking your phone with you during the run, then you could listen to spotify by synching your headphones to your phone, and then independently tracking the run with your watch.

Too bad. If it could sync music from Apple Music or Spotify I would consider buying one, who uses MP3s in this day and age.... ;)

I'm also a first-gen watch owner and am debating the upgrade. I certainly didn't get the watch with the intent to upgrade as often as I do my iPhone, but it's tempting. Here are my key decision factors:

  • Speed: Definitely wish my Gen 1 was faster. I'm waiting for public release of OS3. If that solves my speed concerns enough, I won't want to upgrade as badly. For those on the beta, are you now very satisfied with performance or still feel it's slow?
  • Waterproof: Would be really nice to have this. But I'm not a frequent swimmer. So it's not essential. If I go kayaking, I keep it on because it can handle a splash. If I go swimming, it's in a friend's pool or at the beach, and I can just take the watch off. It's not a big deal. So really, this isn't a major driver, just a want.
  • Brightness: It can be hard to read in direct sunlight now. Not impossible, just a little difficult. So again, the improvement is a want not a must.
  • Resale value: I'd eBay the old ones to offset cost. Unfortunately, I don't expect great resale value due to the new Series 1 discount with the better CPU. This works against my desire to upgrade.
  • Thickness: Damn, the new ones are a mm thicker. It's not a lot, but that's not the direction I wanted to head. -1 point here.

So I'll try OS3 first and then decide.

Go with SS dude and get the link. I want the ceramic so bad but why pair a $1300 watch with a $30 sports band. They should have created a ceramic link to go with it or at least included the black link with it which I think would look amazing. So I am just getting a black SS link this year from my black sport last generation and next generation I will by the "edition" if it is as nice as the ceramic and just use my black link to go with it.

Agreed. I bought the first gen last summer, hung with the leather loop for several months while constantly eyeing the link, and finally treated myself to the link last Christmas. It was a big purchase but I just love the think. It compliments the SS watch body so nicely, and feels terrific. There is no other strap that feels as high-class as the link.

The ceramic body of the new Edition is intriguing for sure, and a much more sensible choice than gold, but it makes matching with straps tricky and limiting.

Though, if you obsess about scratches and blemishes, do not get the SS with link. That is the one warning I have. The ceramic with sport band will surely do better in that regard.

AW1 is a very nice watch with a few nice extras. I don't know if I will upgrade or not. I want to see watch OS 3 in action before I decide. I am one who really enjoyed the AW1 so far. Faster with GPS is no doubt appealing, but I am unsure it is worth the upgrade cost to me.

I don't think your missing anything really. It will have a faster processor so it will be faster but os3 took care of that. I thought for sure battery would be announced and better. Would have to see what is reported.

I could see getting the Nike Watch I suppose and just keep my existing for all daily wear.
Any difference in this thing other than the band?

I was only getting bits and pieces of the keynote stream yesterday since our cellular at work is crap. Last night I was able to see the whole thing. I really like that hiking app the lady sho

You don't think those will be available via download though?

I don't mind taking it in to get it polished every 3-6 months, i am well aware of the blemishes that come with a SS watch. If the ceramic came with a ceramic link I would be ALL OVER IT! you could add something like this but I think for the price of the watch you should get the proper connectors https://www.amazon.com/iSank-Cerami...+apple+watch+band&refinements=p_36:2491158011

I think it might be worth upgrading in the next few months when they have crazy sales then selling a series 1 and buying a series 2 might not be much of a difference if at all if you play craigslist right. I think Im good with what I have now especially since its the SS and will wait for a major upgrade which I don't think is to far off.

I'm definitly liking some of the additions to the AW2, but for how I use the watch, do I really need dual core?
The brighter display is a nice to have, and the GPS is a great addition, though I'm concerned about battery longevity, i.e., if I run a 1/2 marathon, will the watch last long enough? Or if I hike for 8 to 12 hours, will it give out before I'm done?

Yeah... I'm in the same camp with you on this one. And, if they do the internals update to Series 2 when Series 3 comes out and they lower the price a bit, maybe I'll grab one of these. I don't care about LTE on my watch. Sounds like another way for me to have to pay AT&T more money. I like the updates, just not enough to drop a lot of money to get them. Now, if they had an AW upgrade plan? I'd do it. As it is, the watches do not seem to hold much value on the secondary market.

If, however, my daughter finally admits that she never plans to wear her 38mm SS again? I might sell hers and mine and grab a Series 2 without having to lay out much cash. I have too much invested in bands to buy a watch that changes the band connectors, so I'm always leery of saying "I'm onboard for Series 3!" because I will reject it if I lose the ability to use my bands.

It's at least a year off, maybe a year and a half, if Apple sticks to their current schedule. Seems they may want to release it with the phone each time, so it might be a year away. If they want to do an 18-month cycle, it's a year and a half. I doubt they'd wait any longer than they did this last time. But, what is "major?" This is what I wonder.

something that adds functionality that changes my experience. Changes to making it look more like a traditional watch (thinner, maybe round?) and adding new sensors for BP or glucose or allowing it to be less reliant on the iPhone which I currently have an issue with would be major to me.

I like the shape, but I'm a fan of oblong watches, period. I do think that more sensors or less dependence on the phone would be good if I didn't have to buy a separate data plan for it and there was a way to link it all into the one phone number and one data plan with no additional fees from my provider.

yes that is what i want, less reliance but no extra data plan. I have an unlimited plan from verizon and don't want to have to worry about another data plan.

I'm a girl. ;)

I actually don't like the link bracelet, and I lost my white sports band, so I am ok with that one being included. My main hesitation with ceramic is that I don't think it will look good with a lot of my bands. So, I am going to go with the SS.

I'm going to purchase the Watch 2 based upon the following:

Speed: I have been running the OS3 beta all Summer and while it did provide some nice speed improvements I believe the faster processor will help even more.
Waterproof: Not important to me but might help future resale.
Brightness: Definitely interested in this even if it is only a little brighter.
Thickness: Not worried about the additional 1mm.

Resale Value: To me this is the most important item: this watch version adds most of what naysayers said the original watch was missing. When the Gen 3 watch comes out the watch Gen 2 will certainly have more of a resale value. Just looking at resale values right now for the Gen 1 Space Black SS 42mm I will be lucky to get $200-225 for it, which is basically ⅓ the original retail price. No way the Gen 1 watch is worth more than $50 when the Gen 3 ones out. This is important to me as the resale value helps with my new purchases.
