They say just water, no idea if they used soap or anything along with that. Its not coming off. What the hell would it cost to get the screen fixed by apple, i'm dreading to think of the costs of my flatmates stupid mistake.

If they've gone and used some kind of soap or washing up liquid, what are the options to get that off?
Slowly resigning myself to the notion I'm going to have to shell out for a costly replacement![]()
Have you actually tried ANYTHING we have suggested? If you think you are going to have to shell out a bunch of money to replace it, why not get creative and just try to fix it. I will almost promise you that a light plastic polish such as 3m will fix it perfectly. Stop acting like you are afraid to try anything and try it already![]()

There have been some awful suggestions...
There are only two cleaning solutions that I would apply to an LCD display surface: Radtech's OmniCleanz and the previously mentioned iKlear. I know from personal experience and extensive user comments that these products get the job done with no ill effects.
Those images show a surprising amount of residue. I have a well with hard water and I have never seen anything like it when I use a slightly damp microfiber cloth on a display. If there is any residue it is imperceptible to me.
(Of course, if the OP lives in the vicinity of fracking the chemicals in the ground water would be suspect...)
Well this leads me to believe that there is more to the OP's story...

Seems like a strange coincidence that the person posted the same issue with the same username on the apple discussions forum...![]()
I live in London so not sure if the water here is bad? Tried window cleaner, special lcd cleaner from pc worled and will try iKlear tomorrow and update. Thanks all.

LCD cleaner from pc worled eh
Have you actually just tried a damp cloth? A soapy damp cloth? You're going on about this like it's a massive deal to you yet you haven't actually taken any action.![]()
Haha believe me it is. I've tried suggestions, I'm going to give a soapy damp cloth a go now.
Some good ol boot polish should do the trick.![]()
I just use a slightly damp cloth, only tap water. It shouldn't leave any marks. Using window cleaners, abrasives or stuff like that can permanently damage the display. There is no way your display was cleaned using water only. From your pictures it seems like large amounts some sort of heavy cleaning liquid (window cleaner?). Similar happens when too much cleaner is applied to a surface and not removed with water afterwards (I often observed it with glass-ceramic electric stoves).
The display cover is glass (so you shouldn't use the usual display cleaners with it which are designed for plastic), but its a delicate glass. As I see it, you must remove the particles covering your screen. You best option is to use slightly(!!!) damp cloth with regular(!!!) tap water and just take your time, slowly washing out the stain particles. If you are afraid of using tap water, just use distilled one.
