They say just water, no idea if they used soap or anything along with that. Its not coming off. What the hell would it cost to get the screen fixed by apple, i'm dreading to think of the costs of my flatmates stupid mistake.

Have you tried the dish soap method I described? Just make sure the cloth is damp, but not too wet.

With it being retina, it's hard to say. I think I was once quoted £150 to replace the screen on a 13" MBP, but it could have been higher. I would imagine there will be a premium on the retina, but you'll have to call Apple to find out.

If they've gone and used some kind of soap or washing up liquid, what are the options to get that off?

Slowly resigning myself to the notion I'm going to have to shell out for a costly replacement :(

Have you actually tried ANYTHING we have suggested? If you think you are going to have to shell out a bunch of money to replace it, why not get creative and just try to fix it. I will almost promise you that a light plastic polish such as 3m will fix it perfectly. Stop acting like you are afraid to try anything and try it already :)

I'm not even sure anymore whether the OP made up the story or not since he does not respond to suggestions. :)

There have been some awful suggestions...

There are only two cleaning solutions that I would apply to an LCD display surface: Radtech's OmniCleanz and the previously mentioned iKlear. I know from personal experience and extensive user comments that these products get the job done with no ill effects.

Those images show a surprising amount of residue. I have a well with hard water and I have never seen anything like it when I use a slightly damp microfiber cloth on a display. If there is any residue it is imperceptible to me.

(Of course, if the OP lives in the vicinity of fracking the chemicals in the ground water would be suspect...)

I had something very similar on a glass iMac screen that I tried to clean using iKlear and a Microfiber cloth just before sending it off to the winning bidder of an eBay auction...big mistake, made it an awful smeary mess. Turned out the iKlear didn't work well when the display was warm...found something about that after searching online. So, I waited until morning after letting the machine cool overnight and then tried again and with much relief it cleaned back up to perfectly clear. Give it a try!

Will go and try iklear tomorrow.

Have tried window cleaner to no avail. Will update tomorrow with if that works.

Well this leads me to believe that there is more to the OP's story...

Seems like a strange coincidence that the person posted the same issue with the same username on the apple discussions forum...

LCD cleaner from pc worled eh

Have you actually just tried a damp cloth? A soapy damp cloth? You're going on about this like it's a massive deal to you yet you haven't actually taken any action. :p

Yes well my flatmate used the mac, left finger prints and tried to clean with water and left smears. So then I went straight out got the lcd cleaner and used that which left yet more smears. No need to moan about my flatmate all over the net is there eh. Just looking for a solution

Haha believe me it is. I've tried suggestions, I'm going to give a soapy damp cloth a go now.

If that doesn't work, just try buffing it out with one of these babies:

I guarantee that you'll never have problems with that screen again!

OP. You need to let the screen be completely COOL before you use anything or it will smear like crazy. DO NOT use a paper towel. Use a microfiber cloth. I recommend you buy iKlear on amazon. It's the best cleaner available.

I just use a slightly damp cloth, only tap water. It shouldn't leave any marks. Using window cleaners, abrasives or stuff like that can permanently damage the display. There is no way your display was cleaned using water only. From your pictures it seems like large amounts some sort of heavy cleaning liquid (window cleaner?). Similar happens when too much cleaner is applied to a surface and not removed with water afterwards (I often observed it with glass-ceramic electric stoves).

The display cover is glass (so you shouldn't use the usual display cleaners with it which are designed for plastic), but its a delicate glass. As I see it, you must remove the particles covering your screen. You best option is to use slightly(!!!) damp cloth with regular(!!!) tap water and just take your time, slowly washing out the stain particles. If you are afraid of using tap water, just use distilled one.

Thanks, will leave it off overnight so its cool and then try as you suggest, and then iklear if its not working.

I don't know if anyone mentioned, but I believe rubbing alcohol should take care of those nasty stains... I actually used scotch once :p

I honestly think it's not a huge deal where you'd have to get a screen replacement or worse... It they're just water [ hard ] stains.. they will come off.. Just don't go crazy wiping it with paper-towel or alike..

I use a product called ' invisible glass ' on my cars and it works great!!!

Zeiss makes small boxes of lens cleaning wipes for use on glasses. camera lens...etc. That is what I use on LCD screens, my iPhone, my iPad, and will use on my rMBP. You can get the wipes at Walmart for cheap.
