I'm returning my Retina iPad Mini too. Not only are the colors washed out and the gamma too low,

the color gamut is the same as last year's mini.

last year: "Whaaaa, we need ipad's Retina! No Retina, no buy!"

this year: "Whaaaa, we need ipad's gamut! No gamut, no buy!"

...nobody complained about last year's gamut at all. half of you probably didnt even know what the word meant.

so much entitled nonsense.

----------

The price did go up from last year, all things are not equal.

who said anything about being equal? what i said was, in what way is the product capability *worse* than last year's mini? because, you know, the answer is: in no way is this year's mini worse than last year's.

No, last year we didn't buy it because the resolution was crap. We didn't have a chance to see how awful the gamut was. :D

i'm coming from an iPad 2, so I couldn't care less about the gamut deficiencies in my rMini. This screen is absolutely gorgeous.

The value, I guess.

I presume you bought them and were perfectly happy with them before you read this article. Other than your perception due to peer pressure, what changed?
Well if they both said "yesterday," then they both returned them before the article was written. So, you know, maybe they actually have decent eyesight...

I'm glad to see Apple getting called out on this. They have big boy pants and in the long run will only make for a better product in the future.

called out on what? having the exact same color gamut in its mini product line as it had last year? despite having 4x the pixels, 4x the CPU/GPU, and same kickass battery life?

even Anand put it this way:

"The biggest [difference between mini and Air] in my eyes is the iPad Air’s wider gamut display with full sRGB coverage. The mini’s Retina Display is good, the Air’s is just better."

...how that can be perverted into the sort of entitlement whining that only users of MacRumors can generate, is mind-blowing.

exactly. a good 90% of consumers have no idea what color gamuts are and more than likely couldn't distinguish between variances unless they were pointed out to them. Color accuracy is important for photo and video work, neither of which is done on an iPad in any meaningful capacity. If anything, having a less saturated display will help to cut down on all the artificial color enhancements the world of marketing has given us. As long as i don't see banding or harsh gradients, i'm pretty sure the colors on my iPad mini display are just fine, for me, and for 99% of consumers.

There are plenty of pro photograhers that edit on an iPad . In some ways its actually more efficient.

I would have preferred non-retina with A7 and dedicated the additional battery to run-time. I'm still getting the retina mini due to the amazing size and power. I doubt seriously that I will see any screen issues to my eye. They look great in the apple store.

I would have preferred they kept the $329 price point.

Well if ANAND said it, then it must be the gospel truth...

Yeah, they hate me. I think you are the only one who thinks I'm whining... And yeah, I'll be sure to check the computer before it leaves the warehouse and is shipped to me via FedEx. Maybe Apple can include airfare for me with my next order.

I mean, if you don't have anything to contribute to the conversation, you can always post in the MR security leak thread. Need the URL?

No one forced you to keep an expensive device with a defective or unsatisfactory screen. How's that for a contribution?

The value, I guess.

the value of this year's mini is subjective. its product capabilities are absolutely not subjective -- they are concrete.

as for the subjective value (features to cost) of this year's mini, only time will tell -- if it sells well, then one can conclude its consumer base finds value in it.

And tell me that any normal consumer wouldn't notice the difference between the purple spherical containers in Clash of Clans? I think I'd notice if the obviously purple container somehow ended up looking like pepto bismol that sat out in the sun for a year. There is no color to it. Period. 99% of people would notice this. And 99.5% would notice it if they also have an iPhone 5, or really any other phone from 2011 onward, which probably has a more accurate screen than the rMini...

I presume you bought them and were perfectly happy with them before you read this article. Other than your perception due to peer pressure, what changed?

I complained about it the minute i compared the mini and the Air. This article didnt exist yet. People were shouting us down saying we were crazy for noticing. Then it turns out to be we were right.

that's the article this thread is citing. you know, the article youre responding to.

you did READ the article, right? or did you just see the twisted headline MR made and decide this would be a good place to issue entitlement directives to apple?

so weird.

yet, you still wanted to return the Air in favor of the rMini. Then decided all the sudden that it wasn't good enough ;)

on an ipad (full size), or on a mini? since the color gamut of the mini has not changed from last year, your argument that this matters to pros is moot. any pro editing on an ipad already wont be using the mini and would be using the full size.

The new iPad is so light that we decided to call it iPad Air. The new iPad mini has so washed colors that we decided to call it iPad Water. So here they are:

IPad Air and iPad Water.

Here's what Anandtech said last November:

If you're expecting next year's mini to have a Retina Display, I wouldn't hold your breath.

And how many rumors did we get this year claiming the mini might not be retina. Heck I remember Rene Ritchie, Peter Cohen, John Gruber et. al. giving us all the reasons they were skeptical we'd get a retina mini this year. Is it not possible that in order to deliver a rMini with the same (or better) battery life, negligible increase in thickness and weight and no thermal issues, a compromise had to be made and the compromise was color gamut?

why was this not an issue last year, when the mini had the exact same gamut as this year? why is it only now that this is a calamity? last year everybody said they needed retina resolution. guess what, you got it.

bc people trashed the display bc it didn't have retina. they didn't care about the gamut bc retina wasn't in it. they always want something to complain about.

Well, one thing's for sure - this is one way that Apple can help make sure demand for the rMini doesn't exceed supply this holiday season :)
