Not sure what effect your resolution has on this, but for a few months I was using 1920 x 1200. Just switched back to the default retina resolution of 2880 x 1800, and I noticed that all my lag went away. Not sure if the computer has a harder time rendering that resolution. When I take screenshots at 1920 x 1200, it will save them as 3840 x 2400, so I feel like the Mac is still doubling the pixels, creating more work for the graphics card.

I tried using Webkit it doesn't seem to work with some of my Safari extensions. Couldn't get the Reddit enhancement suite to work with Webkit.

If you like the dock on the bottom but want the 2D look instead (I think it looks cleaner- Jony Ive would approve) you can run this command in terminal:

defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YES; killall Dock

It also seems to fix any slight stuttering you might see.
If you want the 3D look back just change the YES to a NO and run it again.

I can't see any difference in speed. But it looks much better. :)

In itunes the scrolling is really choppy too i hope they do something to fix it :( people say i should switch to the "best for retina" configuration but what's the point of having a laptop with better than HD resolution if the actual working space is the same as a 1280x720 laptop (except that it looks more defined) ? work space is important too, i use my mac in "looks like 1680x1050"

Just installed today's SMC update http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1559, and just a quick scan of sites that exhibited the jerky scrolling are silky smooth now (the sites were from memory, so this is somewhat anecdotal).

I haven't installed 10.8.3, yet, but they have also addressed zoomed scrolling performance in Safari.

I found something interesting

I tried the solutions posted here, but they didn't show any appreciable improvement of the problem of the lag, but I checked the system logs and found the following which is also a common problem of Mountain Lion

Apr 5 15:35:28 MacBook-Pro-de-Manuel.local mdworker[913]: Unable to talk to lsboxd
Apr 5 15:35:28 MacBook-Pro-de-Manuel.local sandboxd[914] ([913]): mdworker(913) deny mach-lookup com.apple.ls.boxd

So I safe booted like many times before to solve this issue (temporarly though) and then browsed the verge.com in safari and most of the lag dissapeared, so I think that the guys that say that they don't have the problem must not have the mdworker problem either, It is worth saying that I have the latest version of SMC and 10.8.3 update, and only after updated to that version is that safe booting solves the lag problem for me, I mean this is the first time that I safe boot after the update so it is the first time I noticed the improvement, and also that it doesn't eliminate the problem completely but it improves it like 70% which is a lot, I hope that apple continues optimizing performance because rMBP are not cheap and this is my first apple product and I am very dissapointed for these issues (I also have the ghosting problem) so if they don't solve them this is going to be my last apple product.
