Really wish I still had my Atari 65XE. It was the first computer I ever owned, and my introduction into programming. Threads like these make me wish I held onto some of my stuff.

Now I am missing Karateka.

No kidding. And of course at the end I was sprinting so...

...the princess one-shot killed me.

That should be the other way around...

If you were in fighting stance, she took you down with a kick to the happysacks. If you ran to her she had her arms out for a hug.

I hate you now.. now I want to play it, and both my disks and the IIe are back at my mothers house, 1600 miles away. :p

Virtual Apple, here I come!

My gaming years = 1988-2007

- Don't like FPS games much. Gets me dizzy. Probably why I didn't like the 7th gen so much.

- Never got into PC or online gaming. Another reason why I stopped playing after the 6th gen.

Retro gaming for me only reaches up to NES days. I never got to experience the Atari 2600 and before it. Pixels was a terrible movie but it was also a nice homage to the 2nd gen. I did used to play those Tiger Electronics LCD handhelds as a child. Then my Uncle gave me his NES when I was 7 since my cousin was still an infant and my addiction for console gaming was born.

Dear Lord, please give me the cheat codes to Mike Tyson’s Punch Out. I have been stuck on Bald Bull for four years. I tried left, left, up, B, dodge, Uppercut, but he still knocks me out. And you know, they said you’re suppose to go right, B, up, dodge, left, Uppercut… (chuckles).. listen to me tell you how to play the game.

Peter Griffin on Family Guy when he gets to say the prayers before eating.

I couldn't even beat Mr. Sandman while trying to cheat it by pausing and saving it after every round (on emulators). One of my best friends could beat that game without any continues. Bald Bull wasn't that hard the twice you fight him but if you were 7-8 like me, of course, the level of difficulty is like beating Gradius, TMNT 1, Battletoads, Mega Man 2, and whatever game used to whip our young *** as kids.

tyson-punchout.jpg

But those early beatdowns made me master later games...

+ My Shang Tsung in MKII is bad***. I rarely lost. Morph in Sub- Zero to buy time for the Fatality. Freeze and do Reptile invisible before uppercut to deadpool, spikes, and cut in half. And people say that is one of the best and hardest MK entry. If you master Mileena or Jax, game over.

+ Was on a 50+ win streak once in Tekken 3 vs all my college friends while stoned out of my mind using mostly Mokujin (random select character). But Lei Wulong was my dude because I am also a huge Jackie Chan fan. Yoshimitsu in Tekken 3/TT was fun to use esp double suicide. Was on Gamefaqs and Tekken Zaibatsu for years because of FF and Tekken.

+ Got all the gold cups and $500K cars in Gran Turismo while banking over $25M. I would give my cousins a 30 second headstart and still win using a Viper. Earning those licenses were hard enough already. But I mastered a bunch of racing games because I was into horse racing when Cigar ran and saving ground on turns while drifting.

+ Original Mario Kart and Double Dash all mastered.

+ Got all 96 exits in Super Mario World within three hours.

+ All Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 1 and 2.

+ Conker's Bad Fur Day, N64 version. Tough game. Expect to die alot. Took me 1.5 hrs to beat the last boss in outer space. LOL @ The Great Mighty Poo!

+ Defeated every Final Fantasy game I ever played (8 of them).

Was going to name my daughters either Tifa, Yuna, or Lulu until my gf had a miscarriage. Forgetting alot of games I beat or mastered. Too many games I forgot. Information overload like this post. ;-P

Video game music -
Shenhua theme in Shenmue
"A Deus" in Grandia II
"Small Two of Pieces" in Xenogears
Final Fantasy VI ending video
Final Fantasy VII soundtrack
Top Gear (SNES)
Mike Tyson's PunchOut!!

By end of 2007, I started focusing on cell phones again after the release of the original iPhone. The last games I beat were Twilight Princess, MGS3, and God of War. I only went briefly back to play games in 2010 to play NES, SNES, Genesis, and PS1 games on my PSP. And briefly again last year to beat FFX again when borrowing my cousin's Vita phat.

As much as I like to play old games, my preferences are from the 4th and 6th gen. This was the refined versions of the 8-bit and 32/64-bit eras. Although you had to have reflexes of Superman to beat some of those 2nd and 3rd gen of games that required complicated patterns.

The 2015 E3 blew my mind when they announced FF7 Remake and Shenmue III.

Can't wait to see her again on PS4...

What Macs supported the old Crystal Quest game? I remember loving that one. And there was some little knockoff of Tetris called Columns or something like that, it was something to do while on hold to the bank back in the days when they didn't even play bad music in wait time...

VIDEO POWER!

The thing is, PS1 was the console I enjoyed more during its heyday and I had a better library for it but I only picked a PS2 over it now because of backwards compatibility and DVD playback. Why choose PS1 when you can have PS2 to play those games? And since Dreamcast and GameCube were better to me than their predecessors, the 6th gen was better overall than 5th gen even though the 5th gen is when I was more fascinated with the industry.

It is why I stated in the iPhone 4 Resurrection thread that the only smartphone I would consider picking up is a Sony Ericsson Xperia Play for emulation. For most phones released before 2013, I wouldn't go back to using today. Xperia Play deserves a successor. Some fantastic games came from that 3rd-5th gen but I want a newer device to emulate 6th gen games well.

I think Tekken Tag Tournament ruined my early college years. My last days where I was frequent in the arcades. I remember watching world champ, Crazy Legs. I learned "Haha Steps" for my Lei thanks to him. As much as I wanted to practice my characters in TT, I don't have 12 hrs to spare for practice like those Korean guys. I had a gf at the time, so why bother?

When it comes to retro gaming, I am more fascinated by its history. That is why I have 25 episodes of G4 Icons downloaded in my thumb drive using TubeMate. Anything that would fascinate me like Dreamcast, PlayStation, The Crash, NES, Miyamoto, Kojima, etc. More geared toward the Japanese-style that has been kinda dead for years since everyone rushes out to play Call of Duty or whatever.

I also have all my NEXT Generation magazines in PDF form and use Moon+ Reader Pro to open them. Brings back fond memories. I wished I still had my old EGM magazines especially their year-end buyer's guide. Editor, Sushi-X, always wrote some good stuff for EGM. I love reading about the industry and the bureaucracy more than playing the old games. I even have articles saved in my Pocket app from IGN about the history of Sega, the person who hit a goldmine finding a rare Stadium Events or Sega Neptune in a Goodwill, and read Console Wars by Blake J. Harris.

I have a bunch of video game-related videos saved (7.5 GB) regarding any of my favorite games, ending, song, person, or review. Video games hasn't totally left me my spirit but I grew out of it. Gaming is the least thing I do on my phone. I eventually grew out of it just like I will probably grow tired of collecting smartphones. The only lifetime hobby for me is watching movies and banging chicks. :p

My favorite video game endings -
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy X
Metal Gear Solid 2
Anna ending in Tekken 2.. ;-)

Yeah, yeah, Final Fantasy VII is overrated. They have hooves. Graphics are ugly now. Doesn't hold up anymore. Ending wasn't very good. Still love that game just for Tifa and the music. I think the Legend of Zelda series is also overrated too! Any game or franchise can be overrated as seen by the excited fanboys on GameFaqs forums.

The magazine and issue that got me fascinated with the gaming industry...

Next Generation was the only video game magazine I subscribed to. Enjoyed the game coverage and tech articles.

Back in the 1980s my housemate had something that loaded from cassette tape, I used to play it obsessively but can't remember its name. It might have been Battlezone but (with reference to the linked video) I don't remember tanks, and I don't recall things being empty wire-framed. More solid.. I clearly remember pyramid shapes.

I vaguely remember occasional spinning airborne diamond-like things (maybe octahedrons) can anyone who's familiar with games from that era tell me whether that fits a description of Battlezone? Or might it have been something else?

Postscript

Probably Encounters!

I used to have a huge retro game collection, everything from Commodore 64 to Saturn to Jaguar. When I prepared for college I sold all of that stuff, but I still keep OpenEMU around to play the Genesis games from my childhood.

So I'll use this to give a shout out to Ranger X, been playing that recently and what a cool game that is.

Heh, I bought the Quake pack from Steam. Of course I can't get the first one to play, which is really the one I wanted to play.

Virtual emulation is always better than the real thing... You have multiple systems :)

More likely Elite, the first 3D space sim.

Thanks, do you have a link handy, something on YouTube maybe?

(The sounds in the video of Encounters are very familiar. I'm almost certain that it was Encounters that I played in the '80s.)

The current version is Elite Dangerous, a modern MMO version of Elite.
It is available, along with the original Elite game (emulated) from www.elitedangerous.com
It is on YouTube

Thanks, now I'm almost certain that it wasn't Elite.

The game that I remember was predominantly flat landscape-based and the 'whooshing through hyperspace' (between levels?) that's seen and heard in the YouTube video of Encounters is probably a perfect fit with what I remember.

what a surprise! giana sisters is working on apple tv and playing it with Nimbus is a pleasure!

I'm really into retro consoles... not so much computer though. Where I have happy memories of hooking up a NES and playing games easily, battling my Spectrum and early Windows PC wasn't much fun! I did recently pick up a netbook so I could run old 16 and 32bit classic games but haven't got round to testing it yet.

Modding gameboys is what I do. I don't have many photos to hand either.

I disagree, but I think it depends what you want out of it. Some people just want to have a huge collection of everything and owning all the major systems, all roms for those systems costs nothing. It's easy to do. But others like the physical collection. And something I noticed with music too, when you put a record or CD on there's a lot more to it. It becomes an event. I find myself listening to CD's more recently, playing through the whole thing song after song. But when it comes to my iPhone I'll just pick my favourite songs and move onto random other 3 star+ songs.

I've got both currently. I've got my home network set up with Raspberry Pi's, so my 'digital' games collection can be played on any TV in the house (even an old tube TV for authenticities sake!). But I've also got my physical ones. They make for a good christmas gift too ;)

I've been thinking of picking up a GBA SP (AGS 101). I'm interested in playing some older classic titles (Metroids, Castlevanias, etc.). However now that I see there's people rebuilding the regular GBA with a glass screen and backlit, I think I'm more interested in that for comfort.
