I got a Droid, sitting right here beside the iPhone 4, it works 100% any damned way I choose to hold it. Can't say that about the iPhone 4.

You are dismissed.

NEXT!!!

br0adband,

Has it occurred to you that you actually have a defective iPhone that has a different reception issue than everyone else? Your's has always been the most extreme case.

Bring it to the LV Apple store, show them the problem. Can you replicate it on the store models? No, get a replacement. Yes, return it.

arn

I'll take that as what it is, arn.

I'm outta here while you folks continue this as you best see fit, good luck with it.

I agree with the "if you don't like it return it" sentiment. But I also agree that you should be able to get 100% of your cash back and be able to keep your upgrade status if your phone is indeed useless. Luckily for me I haven't had the signal loss problems (i'm a lefty too) or the green camera blob issue but if I did I would return it and continue using my old phone until it was sorted out, or even better stand up like a man and speak with your wallet. Switch to Verizon or Sprint, get the Droid or EVO, then sell all your Apple products and go back to Windows. Complaining does nothing when the company has sold 1.7 million phones in a couple weeks and is continuing to sell them in huge numbers. If everyone started returning them rather than crying about it on internet message boards there probably would be a solid fix or some kind of real recall. If your phone can't be used as a phone then return it and demand a full refund and your upgrade back!

Please, Please, Please---Everyone that is whining Return Your iPhone!!!

Now, that you can return your iPhone for a full refund. You will not have to come to Macrumors to bitch about the iPhone. Just think how much better the forums will be.

Also, switch to another carrier while you are at it, those droid phones are quite nice and can do lots of things that the iPhone cant. This will take some strain off the AT&T network. So those of use that are lowly iPhone 4 users can enjoy a better network.

The 30-day period is completely misleading and is a PR trick. If the phone is defective by design, there should be an acceptance first on Apple's part. Then an organised recall scheme should be set up. Of course, that would cost Apple money and face.

If a car - let's say a Toyota - is faulty by design and keeps braking down with an exceptionally large number of customers, should they just return their cars within 30 days to have the problem rectified and pay somebody else outside of the 30-day window with taking a severe hit for the resale-value of their car?

Just returned my 4 a few minutes ago with no hassles (10% restocking fee is the only issue.

It's a good phone but after I used it for a week, i couldn't justify keeping it over my old 3G. Sure, the 4 is nice and fast and my 3G is banged up and the wi fi is broken. That being said, my 3G is working fine and I am having ZERO of the proximity issues I was having with the 4G.

So, I got my $200 back, no hassle, activated my 3G, and had my contract reset to this October. I'll probably strongly reconsider this phone when it goes to Verizon.

Returning the phone is not enough.

Not anymore.

Unfortunately for you, that's pretty much your only option moving forward. Once the software update is released, the flames over this issue will slowly die out. Any lawsuits will be in vain. Fewer and fewer people will care, and most people will be happy with their phones.

Seriously, you are not fueling some movement that is gaining strength moving toward forcing a hardware change or recall. It's not like you are protesting against BP or something similar. It's really not anything worth being so dramatic about.

I seriously hope people start taking this advice. I have my iphone 4 and I couldn't be happier. :D

I hope the whiners will take them up on the offer, return them and quit posting here!!!!! :)
It's none of your business what others do with their phones.

If you don't like reading the posts go do something else.

Like go call your family names instead of the people here that you don't know, call them whiners... who made you the judge?

This is forum of public opinion. Don't like it... oh well...

Does this "return it" also apply to any accessories/apps bought in the process?

If someone has invested even more money into the iPhone platform do they get that back?

There are some other problems in other countries where cancelling a subsidised contract could become an issue:

10.1 In addition to any other rights you have, and subject to paragraph 10.3 below, you may cancel this Agreement without liability for the remaining monthly subscription payments and return your Mobile Phone for a full refund:

within 14 days from the date on which you received your Mobile Phone if you purchased your Mobile Phone from O2 or Apple, provided that if you have activated and used your Mobile Phone during this period you will be required to pay for the cost of any usage you make such as calls, texts or data (including roaming or other usage that may take longer to be billed); or
within 7 Working Days from the date on which you received your Mobile Phone if you purchased your Mobile Phone from The Carphone Warehouse, provided that you have not used your Mobile Phone during this period (use would include, but not be limited to, making or receiving a call, sending or receiving an SMS, MMS or any data, browsing the Internet or using any of the functions of the iPhone (e.g. amending settings, saving any data (including music), adding a contact or appointment, taking a photograph or using an application,

Will companies like the Carphone Warehouse accept a "used" iPhone that doesn't fit in their terms just because Apple said they'd accept a return?

i lost $30 on a restocking fee when i returned this garbage phone.

can anyone tell me: WHY IN THE WORLD DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE RIGHT TO RETURN A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT? this is absolutely ridiculous and shows first hand that apple knew their product was trash compared to their previous models in terms of phone usability, and they wanted to scrape up as much money as possible from their fatal mistake.

i;m a longtime user and will never buy another apple product ever again. oh yea that new macbook pro i ordered the other day.. just CANCELED it. apple can go to hell.

Austin? I'll bet I've talked to you on a Face Time Call Demo. : )

Software Update? Will do nothing except shorten the bar countdown from 4,3,2,1, drop to 2,1,drop. Buy a case.

The Class Actions will move forward.

No momentum? Lets see orders for the first 2 weeks of July.

Sure hope things are fixed in 6m so I can upgrade the family. :apple:

I returned my iPhone 4 to the Online Apple Store. They originally wanted to charge me the restocking fee but I had them call me on the device and as they did that I held the phone like I normally would (left-handed here) and the call dropped. They waived the re-stocking fee.

The call to ATT to restore service to my 3GS was pretty painless, however, and this is a big one, since my 3GS SIM was deactivated when the iPhone4 was activated, I had to go to an ATT Corporate Store for them to issue a new SIM for my 3GS. Luckily there was one near my work that had no wait- but for those who are a ways from a store, just keep in mind that you'll need a NEW sim to go back to your OLD phone.

Hey OP,

STOP WHINING about people who are having issues with faulty hardware.

People were still lining up for the phone when AT&T made them available this week. I know several people personally that still want them but can't find them in stock anywhere.

Do you really believe a suit about this will see a courtroom anytime soon? I'm sure the Apple legal team knows what they are exposed on, if anything. That's probably why they are waiving the restocking fee. They won't end up paying damages to anyone for a poor design, if that's really the problem.
And they really won't lose a suit based on having poorer reception than another phone, regardless of the reasons.

If you were dinged a restocking fee, I'd print the official mea culpa from Apple's website, take it in to the store, and ask for the restocking fee to be refunded. If they refuse, ask them to clarify what "full refund" means--if they can't, a judge certainly can.

Remember, you can sue for court filing fees too. ;-)

Who said its not up to my standards? If I got a droid and it was not responsive, but a friend had the same unit and his was, guess what I could exchange it for a working droid. So why is it unreasonable to want apple to exchange my defective phone for one that works like the one you have? Do you go around telling people who have defective screens or cameras to quit complaining and return their phone and get droid? Really quit bitching, people have defective phones and deserve to get working units.

That is an AT&T signal issue. There are signal problems with the iPhone 4 but it is the same for everyone, it is not as if some of them are defective and some of them are not.

Anandtech has an excellent overview on the antenna issue and it has already been covered on the forums several times.

As I said my other AT&T phones still work at my house (iPhone 3G and nokia 6650, plus my wifes 3GS) so it's not an AT&T issue. And it maybe on all iPhones but I would still like to try another to make sure, since so many on here report no issues at all.

Correct me if I am wrong but recalls typically only have to do with safety issues. If the iPhone 4 was burning people's ears, then yes, they would do a recall. Perhaps, the phone has a poor design that makes it susceptible to dropping calls, that is just a poorly designed product and no one is forcing you to take a poorly designed product. It has been mentioned so many times, just return your phone and buy a different brand that would make you happy.

Problem with your example is that those that had the 3gs had a working phone and the iphone was billed as an improvement. Therefore, the expectations were that the iphone would, at the very least, have the same level of efficacy. Buying the motorola without expectations is different and you do have a choice. Remember most who have an Iphone 4 now pre-ordered on those guarantees and were not able to just walk into a store and test it out.

Hope you see this and why being blindly loyal does not improve things for the consumer.

I see your point. The reason why we have a difference of opinion is I accept Anandtech's analysis of the reception issue and don't think the reception on the iPhone 4 is any worst. But if the phone truly doesn't work for you, I believe Apple has offered a reasonable solution by allowing you to return the phone for a refund. I'm not quite sure what more you want the company to do, they are not forcing you to use an iPhone and there are other phones on the market. You have the freedom of choice.

I'm probably going to have to return mine and fight the restocking fee. I've done everything (bumpers, replaced the phone, etc.) and the phone still drops nearly every call in areas I had no problem with my previous 3G iphone. I love everything about the new iphone except that I can use it as a phone! I hope Apple sorts this out in the near future.

You don't have to fight any restocking fee. Apple already said they will give full refunds, just take it to the store.
