I love my Xs max. I have had it since launch. No problems. After my brother saw me with it and asked what phone I had, he went and got one too. He complains that I forced him to buy an iPhone. I told him to get whatever phone he wants. I think it is funny he went for another iPhone.

I returned the XS Max after a week and returned to the X. The main reason was the size. Love the size and handling of the X and missed it every day when I used the Max. So the decision was an easy one for me.

After using ip7 for nearly 2 yrs, I first thought to go for XS max but size was too big and was very comfortable it keeping in pocket. I even ordered XS Max but then cancelled and ordered again XS.
I am slightly disappointed that Zoom display is not available in XS. Why any logic?

Because there is no smaller display iPhone with the same aspect ratio. The Max offers the Zoom display option, where it displays the regular X interface. For the XS to offer a Zoom display option, there would have to exist a XS Mini with a smaller display, but same aspect ratio.

As for the topic at hand, I started with the XS, switched to the XS Max after craving a bigger screen, but I am now back to the XS due to the Max being a bit too large in the hand.

That's what I thought but they told me they "couldn't put me back into my old contract" so I don't know. I wound up just getting the XS instead.
Should of just canceled service with them they should of been able to override it. A return policy should turn things back to what they where originally.

Yeah but then I would've been stuck paying $500 for my X and I didn't want to do that either. It wasn't a big deal I just don't see a drastic difference from the X to the XS so I would've preferred to stay with my X since it was cheaper. Now that I'm thinking about it...I should've just asked for a new X because that would've been even cheaper.

I had the max for two weeks and was originally going to switch carriers and rebuy the max on a different carrier on a family plan.
But after having it for two weeks and liking it for the most part. It was a little harder to use then an X but the screen was nice. Now that I returned it and went back to an X I'm just not sure its even worth going back to a max as this phone just feels exactly the same. The camera was a little better but software wise the X feels just as fast and not old one bit.
Im just feeling like I shouldn't cancel my plan and just hold onto my X for longer now. My mom will be mad as she is on a 6+ and wanted to get the new xr.

Why can’t your mom get an XR? Can’t you just buy one?

That is fair. Personally, I find the larger devices much more cumbersome for my usage. I still use my phone for social media, pictures, videos, etc. and enjoy doing so. The beautiful thing about the XS and XS Max is that you lose zero specs by going with the smaller device unlike previous iPhones.

Agreed on keeping the specs roughly the same between the XS / XMax. I went with a 7+ last time around to get the better cameras and after a year with it decided never again on jumbo sized phones.

I was going to wait another year to see what 2019 brings but all of the above had me snatching up a 512GB XS in short order.....sooooo glad I did it!

I actually went from a XS Max to a XS, then back to my X. Found there was no real noticeable difference especially since I have AppleCare+ on the phone. Don’t want to waste that.

You can get a refund on the unused portion of AppleCare. I have done it twice in the past.

Oh I know that. I’ve also done it before. But why upgrade now when I really don’t need to? I’d rather use this phone for as long as I can until a model comes out that I really feel I have to buy.

It’s probably due to me getting older, but iPhones just don’t excite me as much as they used to. I’m very content with my X. It does everything I need and more, but when I do upgrade, it’s going to be the Max! It’s all about the screen.

I share your sentiments. I enjoyed upgrading devices, but the iPhone is that one device that no matter how many features they introduce every year, I don’t seem to utilize everything, and owning the XS Max meets all my expectations, so if nothing next year really appeases to me, I’m content moving forward that this is a solid upgrade in every way.

I also was not the one who purchased the AppleCare originally so the I wouldn’t benefit from the refund.

It's less than an S upgrade this year, it's hardly an improvement at all.

Reviews have also stated this, it didn't add anything new like touch ID, Siri, 3D touch, stereo speakers/wireless charging etc it's just a bit faster and a slightly improved camera in gold.

It's the worst S upgrade ever IMO and not worth it if you have an X.

I think the worse year was still the 4S regardless of Siri, cause it didn't get LTE when nearly every other phone had it.
I was on Verizon at the time, so it didn't get any data speed upgrade.
1.5 hrs more of battery life and the larger display are big upgrades for some that want the bigger phone. There are stereo speakers, and it it does have stereo recording now.

The camera is a pretty noticeable improvement according to the sites I've seen. If someone has an X and doesn't want the bigger iPhone, then it may be worth holding off, though.

Doesn’t XS battery last 1-2 hrs longer than X?

I felt the same way OP. There’s nothing wrong with that decision. Truth is the new devices are a marginal upgrade.

But Apple made these phones for people on 2 year contracts who got the iPhones available in 2016 and older

The people who upgrade yearly will still do that for the most part

Then they support even older devices for people who use them till they stop working builds brand loyalty

It works out for X users who either via carrier or outright purchase have spent a lot of $ on their device. To have it already dated would be a terrible message. Those skipping this year will prob buy next year anyhow.

In the end Apple only wins haha.

4S had 2x CPU and 7x GPU power than 4. XS improves 15% and 50% more (1.15x cpu and 1.5x gpu) ... those are all apples own numbers

Siri was a much larger feature than anything the iPhone XS has introduced. Virtual assistant was pretty big step back then

Camera back then was major improvement, going 5MP to 8MP

Don’t forget they only introduced video recording 2 years prior with the 3GS and the 4S introduced 1080p recording

The faster cell speeds may not have been useful to you but they were to some people so that still applies as not everyone will actually be using the gigabit speeds offered by the XS. Stereo speakers have been there since iPhone 7. Stereo recording is great but it’s a very minor feature. Casual video recorders won’t notice much of a difference in audio playback and enthusiasts won’t be using their iPhones to record unless they have additional accessories which you can still put on a 6S and get absolutely stunning video footage from that device.

The 4S performance upgrade was massive over the 4. (If I recall correctly it was somewhere like 3X CPU performance and 5X GPU performance). That alone made it worth it! And it showed, as iOS 7 turned the 4 into an unusable POS while the 4S could handle it.

There are battery tests with the XS outlasting the 8 Plus.. which outlasted the X. This was a mixed-use test. I was surprised. Impressed.
[doublepost=1539866100][/doublepost]I think it was the 4S where I thought.. wow, the camera on a phone has gotten real.

There are also some tests that showed the iPhone X outlasting the XS by two full hours. From my experience I wasn't getting anywhere near what Apple advertised on the new phones after using them for almost a whole month.
