I got the surprised face when I returned my iPhone yesterday at my local Apple store. He was very nice to me but was flabbergasted that I was having reception issues . I explained to him that I had dropped 10 calls in one day (yes, I'm not kidding) and the phone was showing 5 bars 3G when it was dropping them. I was using a case so it was not the well known antenna problem. I had to return another iPhone (my mother's, which was also dropping calls) at an AT&T store (due to me preordering at two places) and a girl there was like can I have the phone. I told her sure, I hope you don't plan on making too many phone calls ;).

Fight back against what exactly?

Being told "It's not for everyone" is not mistreatment, it's being honest. Who knows what approach the OP took? There's so little detail in this thread, it's impossible to determine how the conversation took place.

For all we know it was a back and forth consisting of "The reception on this thing sucks, I want a full refund and never want to see an iphone again!" which led to the reply "Yes sir, here's your money. If it's not the right fit, you should not buy one nor be expected to keep one."

So perspective here would help. I'm simply saying don'y jump to conclusions. This sort of conversation can take place in many different ways.

I take your point about products not necessarily making everyone happy. But on the basis that the OP did purchase one after he's had previous iPhones; I think it's safe to assume that the reason for return was the signal problem. Which, by the way the OP also stated.

So here's my take:

Apple assistant says that if you don't like the iPhone, don't buy it.

You say that if they want to sell this iPhone, they should have tried harder and not come out with a defective phone that cuts off calls.

Their response is not just unprofessional but rather arrogant.

For a lot of the whining complaints on these forums, "the iPhone is not for you" is actually the best solution. For one thing, it stops the complainers in their tracks.

I'm sure that whoever the OP was dealing with has been facing these kind of issues constantly; so given the possible circumstances, it does sound like the the salesperson was absolutely correct. However, without knowing whether or not the OP was being difficult, we can only hazard a guess.

OP could always go back to 3GS if they had no complaints with it -- but I'm sure that's not what he/she is going to want to hear.

Dropping calls sounds like a carrier problem, not a phone hardware problem. Or did you think the iPhone is the ONLY phone on AT&T's wireless network that ever experiences dropped calls?

You deserved it, what a dumb reason to return it - there isn't a cell phone on the market that won't do the exact same thing, you may have to cover a different part but still it has the same result....people that buy a PHONE and expect a BJ from Jobs himself make me sick; get a life....

And every network has dropped calls, especially one that takes on 1.7 million new phones in a single day...

good for you, return it if you don't like it rather than just sitting around complaining about it

You forgot to blame Adobe, MS and all the overseas networks. Oh, and the stupid customers who don't know how to hold a bloody phone!

I picked up our iphone 4g at apple store for my wife on 6/24. At same day, it dropped three calls. After that, it seems getting better. My wife hasnt dropped any calls since then. I guess I was holding the phone incorrectly according to Jobs. :D

my iphone is coming on 7/14. Still debating if I should cancel the preorder and waiting for the white one.

Are you a communist? Since when is Apple obligated to come out with a product that isn't defective? Thats the entire point behind a free-market. If their product is defective, you don't have to own it!

It does sound like you need to move on. You must have raised hell with the rep. You will feel better when you do. Maybe an evo, droid, or Gophone..... :D

I cannot believe you just said that. what a Apple fanboy you are!!!

This is similar to returning a shirt a day later saying it's already ripping at the collar and the manager saying "Maybe that was the wrong shirt for you," assuming it was returned due to the antenna problems.

The phone is defected. Software or hardware, it's not able to adequately (for some people) do what should be it's sole purpose: making phone calls. Being told "it's not for you" is a ridiculous response for someone who is returning something due to a defect. It's not like he couldn't figure out how to properly use it (hold it a different way? seriously?) or it was too confusing for him. It doesn't work properly; this is completely on Apple to take care of.

Wow, you read my comment and you come to the conclusion that I'm a communist?! Do you actually know what you are talking about?

EDIT: If there was a free market as you define it, you'd be dead by now!

Since when does a defective product mean something isn't right for the consumer?

Maybe Toyota should've told everyone with acceleration issues that their car just isn't right for them either.

whoa whoa don't bring the gophone into this! Gophones have kept my iphones pristine during spring break, football games, and raucous Friday nights. I respect the Gophone. :D

This is all true -- but what if I'm there to just make a scene?

What if my goal is to stamp my feet and have a tantrum about how ALL their shirts will fall apart despite plenty of people owning them with no collar issues? Maybe I'll just never be happy owning that shirt because it will never live up to my expectations of what it should be? Maybe that's a good reason why the shirt is not for me?

Hypothetical, obviously.

Its not about the defective product. Its about saying that Apple is obligated to fix it. They're only obligated to refund the customer for the defective product. An iPhone 4 is not a right.

How would I be dead?

One day you’re going to look back at this post and think, “Did I really type that???"
