You're right, the customers' complaints might be wrong. After all, what do Apple users know?

At the end of the day, people will come to forums to complain rather than praise, so using forums (Not just this one but in general) as guage for user satisfaction or device perfection is flawed from the outset.

An obvious flaw such as hardware inperfection is justified in getting a refund/replacement but people on this forum are actually LOOKING for problems, such as scrolling Facebook at a million miles an hour and going "OMG Lag, going to return it now!!! Apple sux's!!11111", rather than just using the product.

I for one am very happy with my RMBP and at the end of the day thats what matters to me! :D

I too suffered the lag ONLY when in the highest resolution. When I set it to "Best For Retina" the machine is a beast and I would never ever take it back. I'm sure Apple will fix this minor issue.

Out of the thousands that bought them in total.

Then that's a non-argument. You can't say fifteen people on this forum are complaining compared to the thousands of total sales. If you're going to reference total sales you need to compare it to total returns/complaints.

As such, there very well may be an issue after all.

There are definetly far more people on MR that bought it and are happy with it vs a few that returned it and the ones that feel the need to complain over and over again...its mostly the same usernames you see at the hate posts.

I think your original post is not entirely correct. You went into "troll" territory when you said "lots of everyday tasks" are laggy. That just isn't true. Opening and closing MC doesn't count as a "task", exporting a file from Illustrator counts as a task for me and the screen has no effect on that operation.

I sincerely doubt the hardware is the issue causing lag here. GPU's these days can do 2D scaling operations at insane speeds. Once Apple's software developers have everything optimized I think we'll see the rMBP meet all expectations.

Using mission control Is one of my every day tasks. Don't try telling me the computer isn't smooth because it clearly isn't. Those telling themselves otherwise are in pure denial. It's a beautiful computer and it's more than usable for most people but for me I personally feel its not ready for me.

Can you people honestly handle the fact that someone doesn't think an Apple product is the end all? I think it's really funny how everyone's a troll too. Get a hobby guys. :D

Yes, there is definitely an issue.

Today, after ML is released, we'll see the truth about rMBP, whether retina issues were software or hardware ones...

I think cMBP sales will increase from now... :D

They should change MacRumors to MacTrolls

Honestly, if someone expresses an opinion you don't like about an apple product, they're a troll? It's this kind of attitude that gets Apple enthusiasts pegged with another overused pejorative term, fanbois.

And you're devaluing the term by overusing it. When I was first getting on the net in 1995 with a 28.8k dial up modem, I'd go out of my way to log onto a star trek chat room, find the inevitable user named "Picard" or "Jean-Luc" and quiz him at length how mankind could gain the technology to fly to distant stars but somehow lose the ability to manufacture Rogaine. Now THAT was trolling.

+1

fanbois, kool-aid addicts,...etc

I understand them somehow, they ruined their economy to get the not ready for primetime overpriced rMBP... They are living in their iCloud and don't want someone to wake them from their iDream... Probably, today, they will have a iNightmare... :D

I am not sure why giving advice to those that are unhappy about returning it, rationalising the realities of unhappy vs happy customers and being able to objectively see the positives and negatives without hysterical OCD behaviour makes me a fanboy.

Just to share my experience as well.

I ordered the macbook pro retina on the 19th of June and received it exactly 4 weeks to the day later.

After a week of testing and playing with it, it is an amazing computer! I mean it's thin, light(er), the screen is amazing...and lets not forget the speakers..wow! best i've heard on a portable.

Even after all of these impressive points that i listed, i still chose to return it. Mainly because of the size/weight, UI sluggishness and cost! Also I think it's mostly overkill for my computing needs as well. Ok, let's face it 3,100 Euro is really expensive for any laptop and it makes me nervous carrying around a machine that is soo expensive. Prying eyes are watching :) I also don't like to be a beta tester for 1st gen expensive apple products. I remember when the first Air came out, it cost a fortune and it took them some time to get the kinks out.

Anyway, i decided that i'll go for a 13" air 2.0/8G. This is a very powerful computer for being so compact and its perfect to take on the road. Also pair it with a Thunderbolt Display at home and you have a decent desktop computer. Adding it up i get a 13" air plus a Thunderbolt Display for about 400 less than the retina that i had.

But in all honesty, i think a 13" retina pro would be the perfect machine if they can get a quad core and 16G of RAM.

Do you have a link to Apple acknowledging the lag problem?

Really?? That is your reply? Have you seen Apple rush to acknowledge problems in the past? Here is a list off the top of my head:

Firebook
MacCube (case issues)
TiBook Hinge Problem
iBook White Spots
First Gen MBP Warping Lid
iPhone 4 Antenna

Most of these took the media to get involved and then a class action lawsuit.

I could Google the list but I think my point is clear...

congragulations. Where did I put the cookies again? But seriously there are plenty of other threads.

This is exactly why I decided to skip the rMBP this year and get a new MBA. Like Anand mentioned in his review, the upcoming Haswell chips with improved graphics performance will certainly help iron out the wrinkles experienced with this first generation system.

did you actually try the rmbp for yourself? Or did you only go off of what you read on the internet? Because honestly I read all the complaints and have been perfectly happy with my base model :)

Yes I have tried it and to be fair it was in the Apple store and not at home with real world usage. That being said I did experience some GUI glitches in store. This first hand experience combined with seeing pictures of various RMBP owners experiencing graphic artifacts and ghost screens, just made me stay firm to my belief that IMO I could not see myself spending more than 2 grand on first generation hardware no matter how good it is.

No computer is going to be perfect for everyone. If someone tries it out and doesn't like it, why is that such a big deal? Some people seem to take it as a personal attack, and it's not. If the OP experiences some lag when scrolling, and it bothers him/her, that doesn't mean that the retina MBP is a piece of crap. It just didn't perform up to his/her specific standards.

I understand why people dislike threads like this, though. OP, you're returning your computer for a something that bothers you. It's not a major defect with the computer, and people posting threads like this makes it seem like it is. It's really a personal preference. It's fine that you're returning your computer, but I'm not sure what the point of telling everyone about it is.

People should look at the computer's specs, take all input from forums with many, many grains of salt, and get what they think will work best for them. Try it out in the 14 day trial period, then return it if it doesn't work out. Everyone has different preferences and different tolerances to their machine's appearance and behavior. It doesn't make either side right or wrong. It just causes lots of name calling and drama in forums like this. People need to relax.

No mean to troll, but I think most of the people who are preaching the added value(s) of the rMBP are not techies...

Although the retina screen is crisp and nice, I think most of Mac application developers, Mobile developers (Android, IOS), Enterprise/Web developers (fronted and backend), System developers, System/Database Administrators, and geeks, would agree that the real added values of cMBP are the operating system (Mac OS X), the computer power (mainly cpu, ram, gpu, and disk), its upgradability and durability.

I'm just here to chim in that yes this is an amazing computer but the work I do requires at least a 1080p resolution so I wish I could have a smooth experience on the highest resolution. I'm really hoping they fix this issue with software updates, I'm going to try installing windows to see how that goes. But like everyone else said, I'm not trying to troll, but I'm a little disappointed. When you spend as much money on a computer as we did you expect everything to be perfect. My 2009 mac pro shouldn't have a smoother experience than my 2012 macbook pro retina, bottom line.

for the love of everything holy, please stop using the word "fanbois". it creeps me out.

I have 2010 MBA and played around with rMBP along with other MBP/MBA in the store and I must say even with basic tasks like moving cursor across the icons on the dock turned out to be jittery albeit just slightly, but not as smooth as MBA, or regular MBP. I believe this is related to OP's experience.

oddly enough, apple has kiosk software running on their rmbp which causes this. i played with the same exact model in bestbuy and it was smooth as butter. in all fairness, i have never seen a machine cause this much confusion as to whats causing what. two people with the same exact machine reporting massively different results. crazy indeed
